@James Brice your excuses for why clark was such an inept interviewer is readily contradicted by OTHER interviewers of this time period who asked INTERESTING questions of their guests & didn't make fools of themselves. Y00're just a moron, james.
All of Abba's music will never stale over the decades as they have great lyrical content, music are well composed ,the words are true to life and their music will live on through the ages . Thanks for contributing your music to the world .God bless you all !!!!!!!!!!
Cookie Monster Agnetha’s English was not as good as the others and it could be a bit scary during English speaking interviews. Just love her, by the way. What a sweetheart!
Of the girls Frida always was the more talkative, fun and outgoing one on stage. Frida, also loved the stage, lights, camera, etc.... and was noticed for her great live singing and her joy of being on stage. She was very flirty and engaging. Frida's background is a stage singer and performer since grade school, turning pro in 1958. In 1967-1972 she did live TV shows, live radio shows and also modeled before ABBA. Agnetha was most comfortable in studio. Agnetha's background was studio pop singer before ABBA. That is how she was known. A pop star. She had some live stage experience, but very little. Frida was the ABBA girl that was known for her fun and flirty on stage performances and her one-on-one fan interactions.
You can tell that Dick Clark is just trying to fit as much material in with the little time they have left for the interview, luckily whatever annoyance or irritation that might be going through the group's minds does not show, and all of them are well composed, polite, and respectful, as true artists are!
I agree Friend. I have lots of respect for Mr. Clark and his talent and professionalism although as I stated this interview was very awkward and uncomfortable. The group ABBA showed how gracious and patient they were during this interview. I’m sure Mr. Clark was an intelligent man and realized it did not come off the way it should have and made apologies to them in private for the interview
As for Dick Clark, his unprofessionalism here was stunning. You’d think that a longtime TV and radio personality would have better interviewing skills, but this was terrible. And no, it looked like the members of ABBA clearly thought he was an idiot, or at least making a fool of himself. They indulged him nonetheless, but I almost wish one of the girls would hit him over the head with that microphone!
Lol, thanks for the explanation from Dick Clerk’s management company. The man was making a fool of himself here. He had no idea how to conduct a professional interview and it was obvious.
I have always loved Abba and their music. They are one of the most beautifully harmonically blended groups I have ever heard. Of the two girls Frida and Agnetha, my friends all seem to root for Agnetha as far as beauty goes. I don't know...maybe I'm the odd man out here, but I think Frida is absolutely beautiful, and I prefer her voice to Agnetha's, but I couldn't imagine any one of their voices being absent from the group...but oh well...I guess its all according to taste.
That's because most men go for blonde hair girls....seem to be more sexy and beautiful.....but then there's many men that love the brunette hair.....seem to be not only beautiful but senuiously sexy too so in my opinion and I'm a woman....I think both are sexy and very fine ladies😊
not from America for sure cause they think they know all about Rock...lol...two words...The Beatles and The Stones. To be honest America are copy cats and it is a big world and doesn't revolve around the U.S.!!!!!!
Cliff Riley Surely you don't think the Beatles and the stones invented rock? The genre originated and evolved from African American culture in the U.S. Even Paul McCartney said the Beatles would have never existed without Chuck Berry.
Why all the hate towards this Dick? :D As a Swede, I found this interview (and interviewer) pretty spontaneous and charming. Not the usual boring questions that they mostly got from the press and tv.
I remember that group in the 70's and ahead , They sang like Angels, They really have fans world wide, plus they were conservative and married couples as an example that family together can acomplish amazing skills and virtues , God bless them even today .
Девушки обе великолепные. Но я обожаю Фриду!!! Она настолько хороша, что дух захватывает, а когда говорит своим завораживающим голосом.... Ой, заслушаешься.🥰🥰🥰
@@keendeesjarlais3636 I guarantee they were all thinking that, because he was talking nonsense. Krauts? Jews? You're not all blonde? Can you do a German accent? What a load of drivel.
@@Soundeagle3456 It depends on the letter following the ä/ö, but approximately, Fältskog is pronounced like felt + school - l + g. In words where the ä is followed by an r (lär, bär, ära, etc) the ä opens up and becomes similar to the vowel sound in fair, hair, bare, dare, etc. Meanwhile, the sounds in sir, stir, bird, learn, etc. are similar to an open ö. (There are no closed ö-sounds in English. No (Swedish) u-sounds either. The two languages generally differs a lot in the vowels department, although consonants and basic syntax are more similar.)
@@herrbonk3635 she said she did not mind been called Anna herself because people could not pronounce her name. BJORG called her Anna all the time. Listen thoroughly and watch all their videos and interviews.
Started watching Abba on TV and listening to their records and tapes since 1975 when I was 19 . Then age 52 up to now been watching them on You Tube Liked You Tube ! I am now 65 years old ! Ill be 66 on April 22nd 2022 ! Love their music and songs they sang in 70s and 80s !
Strange this interview did not focus on their tour or album. "Where do Swedish learn rock," and "We thought all Swedish were blonde" What ? And why all the questions about how Germans speak ? I know times were different then, but this was a poor interview. They must have thought he was stupid !
I am a musician and I pity those who are condemning this interview and the interviewer. Why can't you just be thankful that we are still able to see interviews such as this. I am just happy I have a chance to see this.
I know! Since I discovered these interview spots a couple weeks ago, I'm amazed at how easily people are willing to pick apart Dick Clark and the interviews and the off-hand comments he makes. To me, it's like biting the hand that feeds. For YEARS, it was the only chance people had a chance to see performers, and the interviews were just bite-sized conversations with a guy who understood the business and was willing to give you a look inside it, too.
Those that appreciate, will appreciate and may pass on to others, those that hate, will pass on to others who may be gullible too OR may see things differently THAN what the hater intended, so let's all cheer and enjoy....
You have to remember that before Abba, all of the foreign pop and rock musicians who came to the United States were from England or Canada. Never before had a group come from Continental Europe like Germany or Sweden. So the questions are just awkward because people only know the bare minimum about Sweden whereas they know a lot about England and Ireland and Canada
Still, the questions were incredibly unprofessional coming from a television host of a major program like Bandstand was at that time. He was unprepared and bumbling around like he had no idea who his damn guests were.
Also 50 years ago they won the Eurovision Contest beating Olivia Newton-John who came in fourth place. They worked with her on her 1978 Special Simply Olivia and then worked with her on The Unicef Charity Concert in 1979. Kids born in the 1990's listen to them, and are blown away. Even Entertainment Weekly said that they were next to Little House On The Prairie, and Xanadu a guilty pleasure. Frida (The Brunette) and they in general were also influenced by Motown when she did her Version of Baby Love in Swedish and Benny acknowledged them when they were inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
A remarkable interview we would never see today. ABBA was huge in Ireland and also with Irish Americans and I love how Benny points this out. I love the non PC freedom of Dick Clark'scomments. Reality.
LOL, it's called cluelessness and unprofessionalism, not "non PC freedom." He made some stupid comment about "Kraut rock and roll," then tried to mansplain his way out of it by lecturing them on American culture. A bumbling idiot.
If there were a musical sensation touring the US, Dick Clark had to have them in American Bandstand. Yes, he tried to get as many questions in with little time he had for them. All members of ABBA very polite and accommodating. Thank you.
But his questions were terrible. For a show that was as widely broadcast, you’d have expected the host to be more professional and more prepared. This was awful.
Agnetha did a little cheeky grin after Clark skipped the mic because she was shy and didn't like publicly talking. It might've seemed mean, but inside she was probably like "YES"
It is very pleasant to hear this interview of this special group. Sometimes I imagine how good if we could travel back in time and share moments like this.
I can see Agnetha isn’t impressed with the interview questions haha. This is unbelievable, he has the opportunity to ask an amazing musical group about their music, but all he focuses on is foreign accents in Sweden?? Nothing about their music!
And did you notice, out of the entire interview, he asked her (Agnetha) one stupid question, and then shut her down. What's up with that? I wanted to hear more from her.
@@joequillun7790 If you watch other interviews he did, he had a very irritating habit of doing that...interrupting his guests and then talking over them. He really wasn't very good at interviewing people and that was a big reason why. However, he could have asked them some better questions. There are plenty of ways that he could have been smoother when asking about their accents and their musical influences.
Dick Clark was awesome pepole, it was a much bigger world back then.He was just trying to inform his viewers on these people from a far away country. They were probably the first Swedish group to hit it big here so yeah folks were curious about them.
Yeah, but this was so amateurish from someone who should have been more polished. "Where do Swedish people learn rock and roll?" SERIOUSLY ? He could have instead asked, "Who are your major influences?" or "Many Americans may not know a lot about Sweden, so can you tell us a little about your background and the music that's popular there?"
The questions made me cringe.....so where is Sweden, how many people live there. Are they like you ? Do they have feet and hands ? Do they speak with strange accent ?
RIP Dick Clark. You will be truly and deeply missed. A class act all on his own. America has lost a true legend and a part of America died today. New Year's Eve will NEVER be the same.
So much for the truism that people love to go around repeating that ABBA could not really speak English. Since the end of WW II, i believe that all the Scandinavian countries have been practical enough to see that their people learn English. I wish I could speak any other language as well as they speak English.
well swedish is the second official language in Finland,BUTT even our government, politicians and officiliates cant do both, or very poorly! so daant waarry, you dant haffto da unny thingy, but pay them rents an taxis... Yaman ,du Costa ( btw aye wonderful guitarist!), : )
Dick Clark is one of those people who always think they have a lot to say or ask in an interview, but really doesn't. He spent so much time in the music business, interviewed a lot of acts through the decades, and yet every interview I've ever heard from him is just as awful as this one.
For as respected as he apparently was for American Bandstand, watching him bumble his way through this (and most other interviews) was a jaw-dropping experience. Incredibly unprofessional.
Dick Clark was suppose to be a professional but here he comes across like an amateur; the only question to Agnetha: "How many people live in Sweden?" good one Dick!
Well the interview was a bit frothy and daft but to be honest, the focus is nearly all on the two ladies who speak the least. Agnetha only has to smile sweetly and Frida has got one of the sexiest speaking voices imaginable. Both adorable
What most of you don't understand, is that, there was a time when people could engage in genuine discourse, on most topics, without fear of being called 'insensitive' or 'inappropriate'. It was a time when adults spoke to each other like adults, and didn't have a need to run away feeling offended by every little thing.
I’m sorry, that is bullshit. Dick Clark here was clumsy, unprofessional, and just clueless. You’d think that a host like this would be more adept at conducting an interview with guests on his show, but he was utterly terrible at it.
At the time of the interview, they only had one significant hit on the charts, Waterloo, and SOS and I do I do I do I do what is soon to follow in 1975
Correct, ABBA had not yet reached superstardom in the US at this point, though they were quite the rage in Europe. Still, for a major television program, for the host to be that patronizing and unprofessional to his guests and not even realize it was astounding. And he thought he was skilled at it.
He was a bumbling fool here. He had absolutely no clue what he was doing, and his awkward attempt to talk with them ended up having him doing most of the talking and then attempting to explain his way out of several stupid things he said or asked. This is one of the worst attempts at an interview I've ever seen. A high-school journalism student would have been more professional and prepared.
or even the Bandstand studio. When a television appearance is being set up, doesn't the presenter go over the questions, etc., with the guests in advance? He acts like he just bumped into them at a bar.
He was laughably unprepared and unprofessional here, but this also has the feeling of “This group isn’t going to be a big hit here, so I can just bumble and bullshit my way through a few questions that I ask them.” I’m sure Bandstand had a lot of artists appear who didn’t become big hit makers.
Dick Clark did it again.Another massive pop phenomena on American Bandstand.I don't fully know their success in the USA but in Britain virtually every pop single they released went straight to no.1 . I don't think D C is fully aware here,of how big they would become.
