An excerpt from a british documentary (1985) with Russell Davies in which Dick Hyman demonstrates the evolution of jazz piano styles. Willie "The Lion" Smith's Fingerbuster (composed 1939) Sorry for the bad audio quality.
This guy is pure class. If you want to hear more, I highly recommend "Gulf Coast Blues." I emailed Dick to tell him how much I loved it and he sent me a very nice reply.
he has to be in the top 5 of all living pianists of whatever stripe. would that i could have the talent in my whole self that he has in the tip of his pinky finger.
Enjoy a master class with the Great Dick Hyman and Dave Frank free on YT)Dick plays his ass off and gives greats insights into his creative process and his career. Super-fun! Type in "Dave Frank" "Dick Hyman", open up a box of wine and diggit)
anyone notice at the very beginning the guy standing by the piano who turns around before he plays looks like he's gets sucked away or something maybe it was fast forwarded right there?? haha
One person went to a strange place where the railway tracks were painted to resemble piano keys. That person was practicing the fingerbuster on the tracks, not hearing the approaching train, as he was focused on hearing the tune in his head. Very soon, the train collided with his fingers, and now only his thumbs are left.
this piano compsition, is basically... the true musical discription.. of.. well madness! this song sounds like a bar fight looped to go on for forever. and love the name. lol dick hyman!.
