Dick Tracy: Why Doesn't Disney Show This Classic Any Love?

For us 90s kids, Dick Tracy was an interesting monster of a movie. It seemed to take a lot of cues from Tim Burton’s Batman, which was released the previous summer, but it definitely had a distinct voice of its own. Dick Tracy was another classic pulp adaptation of an urban enforcer that had very dynamic visuals and an over-the-top rogues gallery. It even sported a score by Danny Elfman, which would have his signature atmospheric sound. The movie would introduce a generation of young audiences to the 1930’s film noir/ detective movie genre. Additionally, the movie brought back Warren Beatty after a three-year absence when his last film, 1987’s Ishtar, was a big flop. Having a star like Beatty in a big-budget franchise like this was an enormous asset for the re-budding intellectual property. And the star power wouldn’t even stop there.
Grab your Tommy guns. It’s Dick Tracy on this episode of Revisited.

I have a silly story. So I was about 8 or 9 when this came out. I loved it. It was a mob movie I could watch with my parents that they liked too. Unfortunately I heard the lines "30 seconds no more Dixk (Tracy)" I kept repeating it all night till mom had a fit and I learned some dirty words Aren't necessarily forbidden but still a no no.

As a kid in the 70s I’d get shipped to my grandmother in Brooklyn every summer. Every Sunday I’d take the very generous comics section from the newspaper and read it start to finish. The back page was Dick Tracy and I loved saving that best for last. This was many years of my youth. From that perspective I enjoyed this movie. It was absolutely not a great movie, the strip itself wasn’t humorous, and the camp was heavy but it carried enough of the heart of the strip that it had a happy familiarity. I still appreciate it.

They were so heavily made up you didn't recognize most of them, and their roles were little better than walk-ons and cameos. The promise was HUGE. The delivery was almost non existent. Add to that Warren Beatty has all the charisma of a coma patient, and Madonna, INCREDIBLE singer, but god love her, she just CAN NOT ACT. I'd say Dick Tracy got all the attention it deserved. Flat Top-“That’ll be the end of Dick Tracy.” Itchy-“Yeah. Thirty seconds, no more Dick. Thirty seconds, no more Dick. Thirty seconds, no more Dick.” Prune Face-“I’m not gonna take this bum out of the headlines. I’m rubbin’ him out!” Kid-“When do we eat?” Tess Trueheart-“Tracy, when you play in the streets, it’s part of the game. I get that. Just don’t expect me to like it.” Big Boy Caprice-“YOU’RE NOT OUT! YOU ARE NOT OUT! WHEN YOU ARE DEAD, YOU ARE OUT!” You are mine, I own you!” Dick Tracy-“Is the enemy of my enemy my friend? Or, is the enemy of my enemy my enemy?” I loved the visual style of Dick Tracy. It was a comic strip that came to life. A few years later, I met a film extra on the set of Two Much. He told me that he dubbed the voice of Mumbles in the Spanish language version. What was missing in the movie was Dick Tracy’s origin. What made Dick Tracy Dick Tracy? In the novelization, Dick Tracy was in college to become an accountant, but criminals robbed his parents’ business and they were killed. Tracy swore that his parents will have justice. He became a police officer and worked his way up through the ranks to become the lead detective in the department. Madonna’s album I’m Breathless was interesting and inspired because she was performing in the character of Breathless Mahoney. Songs like ‘He’s A Man, Hanky Spanky, Back In Business, Something To Remember, Cry Baby all fit the setting of Dick Tracy. There was another album that had other songs dedicated to Dick Tracy. One of which was performed by Jerry Lee Lewis. I remember The Dick Tracy Show when I was a kid. The Filmation studio would have Dick Tracy in an animated segment on a show called T.V. Funnies. Of all the rogues gallery of villains in Dick Tracy, Flat Top was the most dangerous. I think Dick Tracy got a raw deal. If a remake is in the works, Warren Beatty could get Bradley Cooper to play Dick Tracy. Just a thought.

Disney has a lot of hidden gems they seem to bury. Child of Glass, Watcher in the Woods, Something Wicked This Way Comes. The Black Hole and Who Framed Roger Rabbit seem to sort of be on that list as well as Rocketed and Arachnophopia. The last four I believe are at least on Disney +. Dick Tracy is a very innovative movie. It mainly stays in the primary color palette like a comic strip would ever Dick Tracy got his start. A failed adaptation of Brenda Starr came out before this starring Brooke Shields. Brenda Starr and Dick Tracy shared the same comic as Little Orphan Annie. Disney should have known with a forties era property it wasn't going to be wholesome especially with gangsters. I think Dick Tracy suffered the same fate as Roger Rabbit for many years. So many classics ended up under the Touchstone label. Another example would be Adventures in Babysitting. Chris Columbus' directorial debut with a John Hughes feel of kids acting like kids. Yeah it has cussing, the cheating boyfriend and one of the most underrated lines in a movie. "Don't F with the babysitter!" Because of the John Hughes influence Disney tried to bury it and homogenized it with a Disney Channel remake. Disney doesn't value the real treasures in their catalogue.

I was under the impression that Beatty played with the idea of wearing a prosthetic nose/chin, but he was dissuaded to do so by producers because he’d lose sympathy from the audience. Or maybe he just spread that to make himself look good. Either way so much could’ve come from this movie- there was character appearances and a short lived stage show at Disney, there were plans for a shooter ride (which was an insane concept for the time), and many more things planned.

Be sure to read Jeffrey Katzenberg’a infamous 1991 memo. It details that the reason Dick Tracy was concerned as a disappointment was that they spent just as much money marketing it as they did making it, severely narrowing the profits. Meanwhile, Pretty Woman only cost a faction of the budget of Dick Tracy and ended up outgrossing Batman worldwide, which was their goal with Dick Tracy. Beatty was pissed about being singled out for this and has sat on the property all of these decades out of spite it seems.

I first saw Dick Tracy as youngster during the summer of 1990 in the theatre. To this day, I still believe it is the most underrated comic book movie of all time.

Great movie and Ironically i was just quoting Dustin Hoffman's Mumbles last week to a friend of mine...,a long running joke since the movie dropped when we saw it together as kids,,when the heatlamps hit and Mumbles slowly but surely snitched Big Boy out "Big boy did it"😆🤣

In 1990, Warren Beatty made a Dick Tracy movie. But no one would let him make another one, and even tried to do a tv show without him. He got so mad he decided to find a loophole in his contract and get decades of petty revenge. Every couple of decades, he makes a no-budget 20-some minute tv special where he complains to Leonard Maltin while wearing his old costume, and releases it unannounced in the middle of the night on TCM. This week, at 85 years old, he premiered his new one, called Dick Tracy Zooms In. He didn't even have to show up on set. However, he has gone to court to make sure that they legally count as sequels, and thus renew his rights to the character. He does this solely so that no one else can legally use the character for anything. This new special will make the character his until 2027, when Dick Tracy goes into the public domain and anyone can use him for free. This is art. This is some A+ Andy Kaufman-level trolling. I will never watch either of these specials, because the whole point is that they are unwatchable, low effort, and awful enough to be a middle finger to some bean counting whipper snapper who made Warren Beatty mad in the 90s. But I am so happy they exist. I'd rather know these bird flips by an old man taking a grudge to the grave are in the world than a Dick Tracy Disney+ show starring Chris Pratt.

As a kid, I liked the artistic side. My dad rented often horror movies for me and my older brother, so it was not a problem the violence hehehe He hated Disney. I went to Disney World with my mother and my aunt, he didn't want to come 😂

Awesome film! absolutely love Al Pacino energy in the movie. Warren Beatty is great and I got a good laugh out of Dustin Hoffman’s Mumbles character.

I loved this movie as a kid. a reboot would be great if they keep the style, update the story if they want but it needs this super saturated limited pallet static shot moving painting feel

For many of us kids who grew up when this movie was out, it served as our introduction to many of the great actors of the day, like Pacino, Hoffman, Sorvino, James Caan, William Forsythe, and of course Beatty himself. I mean the cast itself was a rogue's gallery of the best crime cinema actors of the past thirty-odd years by that point. I know for me, my childhood obsession with Dick Tracy would go on to inform my love of classic film noir and hardboiled detective fiction which I dabble in in present day.
