In 2018, as straw bans passed across the country, searches for metal straws on Etsy went up 208% and reusable straw companies sold out. But did this movement really help?
PhD candidate and researcher Takunda Chitaka did her thesis on the environmental footprint of different kinds of straws. She found that metal straws were less likely to be littered and end up in the ocean, but because of the environmental impacts of mining, refining, and shipping, a metal straw would have to be used 37 times for its impact to be less than that of plastic straws.
Emy Kane is the senior director of digital at Lonely Whale, a nonprofit founded by actor Adrian Grenier that focuses on decreasing plastic pollution. Lonely Whale created the viral, celebrity-led #stopsucking campaign in 2017.

I have a blue plastic one free from the starbucks color changing cup and an unused bamboo straw gifted to me christmas of 2019. I have no plans of buying any more straws until I've used up those three. I just like the reusable lifestyle. It fits my budget well. David Winehouse of course the plastic straws isn’t the main pollution problem, but it sure helps not to use them. I and my family also don’t use plastic bags in the store, don’t drink coffees from plastic cups, I’m using eco friendly toothbrushes and glass jar tothpaste and I haven’t buy a plastic bottles in years, and I’m vegetarian, so I don’t support animal factory production, as one of the main reasons of pollution. That’s just my opinion and my lifestyle, in no way I’m trying to change anyone else’s.

This video makes some great points! After seeing this, I feel like eliminating straws altogether in some areas might be a great idea. Areas including fast food restaurants that sell their drinks with the Classic plastic Cap+Straw combo. It's totally possible to just remove the straw, and modify the cap in these areas to a sip cap. I've found a particular cap that allowed the drink to go down more smoothly than a straw at a Costco. I feel like getting rid of the straw, even in just some places, completely is a worthwhile movement

They are in perfect shape even though they get used daily and are over four years old. So far I haven’t lost one. Likely nobody will see this but what I’m really interested about is whether going back to glass bottles like we did in the 1950’s would be better than plastic? Cause they were thicker and were reused, still are at CocaColas plant in Spain... Cause even with plastic that’s recycled it gets shipped often across the planet to be badly sorted then reused. 5:50 - This is my main issue with the whole straw thing. Many places ban plastic straws, but then replace them with so many paper straws that the waste is either the same or worst then before. Instead of doing this, why not either just remove the straws and drink from the cup, or try to come up with plans to eliminate significantly more waste, like the plastic cups or containers?

Better yet charge like 5 or 10 cents for a straw, plastic sack, Styrofoam go-container/cup, etc. The use of such things would dramatically decline. However now people are paranoid about the Koof and want paper/plastic wrapped plastic things to eat/drink with because its seen as more sanitary instead of eating/drinking directly from reusable cups/flatware. :/

I think the solution is to just not offer straws, unless asked. People who really need straws will ask for one, but majority of people will just accept their drink if theres no straw in it. I think the solution is to just move to, drinking right out of the cup. fast food places are the main culript, just offer different drink covers, where people can drink straight out of the cup.

nice. for me, metal straws are too dangerous. they can burn you if you use it in hot drinks, if you don't clean it often or very well, especially the ones with the curve in them, you can't see if it has mold growing in it. and, i don't know how it was made. most metal straws are made in China, so every sip could also contain lead. metal goes in but never comes out, so i just don't like the idea that i could be accumulating toxic materials inside of me. but there can be fear in every thing. did you hear about the woman who fell on her metal straw. ouch

Everyone is saying just drink out of a cup its they are used for. But most if the time when i have to use a straw i am on the move i don't use them at home and don't know anyone who does. And when you are on the go it helps to have a cover on your drinks so it will not spill or splash and having a straw helps get passed the cover without having to remove it. I guess they could make more coffee style covers but you sip coffee and you would need to close the tab everytime you done drinking and a straw you can just set and forget.

Unfortunately, your "personal footprint" doesn't matter. The problem is and will always be capitalism. 50% of the plastic in the ocean comes from fishing nets, using straws is not damaging to the environment. If those enormous corporations weren't reaching for profit at any cost and accumulatig endless capital, there wouldn't be such discussions because there wouldn't be so many cheap alternatives for everything we buy. Look at all of the people copy/pasta-ing! Totally agree. Hemp, bamboo, and possibly kelp are some of the best plants we can grow to offset carbon emissions. Giving farmers a big reason to grow them, say, the entire straw market, can only accelerate things. Alternatively, having a single straw that you use everywhere for your entire life is at least an equivalent solution. Buying straws made and processed from hemp/bamboo/~kelp/tree/grain plantations closest to where you live, and adding them to the municipal green waste stream or your own compost after their useful lifespan might be the ideal solution.

The intention behind reusables was originally that you would buy some and keep them forever, but companies churned out lots of them and encouraged people to collect them. People who really are dedicated to true reusable movement are very aware of green washing and consuming less is important, but people who are just exposed to version of sustainability they see at stores aren’t changing their habits and so they continue to consume reusables. There are also some items marketed as reusable but there is a cheaper and more readily available reusable out there, I’m talking about like those bamboo utensils like “ToGo Ware” or a $20 set of a few simple hand towels, why aren’t your metal utensils at home good enough, they won’t make a lot of noise in a similar pouch.

I genuinely hate the stop sucking campaign. Not because i believe pollution is fine, but because there are SO many factors to consider. The biggest one being that straw bans can seriously harm disabled folk that have to use them to be able to drink, especially ones that can flex and bend. Metal, nor bamboo (although, bamboo IS a good alternative. I've been considering some myself) can bend. We're also putting the blame on the shoulders of people who's carbon footprints are microscopic compared to the damage done by large corporations. Now, I'm not saying we shouldn't try to be better, eating less red meat and reducing waste isn't pointless, and if enough people do it, it'll add up to a much larger impact. However, campaigns like this feel wrong. There are SO many factors to consider here, and i genuinely feel like straw bans just kinda, pushed all that aside to make a whole other way of blaming individuals for a problem that they genuinely don't have as big of a part in as some other sources, like fossil fuels, carbon emissions from factories and large cattle farms, the fact that trash companies aren't being responsible about where their dumping sites are, etc. Our issues are far bigger than plastic straws, and laying the blame on innocent people is awful.
