You guys are right, neither is a clone of the other. In actual fact, the design is by Ichiro Hattori from Japan. In the late 80's CS got the rights to the design from Hattori to sell in the US. At the time Hattori was making his own blade for Japan market called the Big Bowie Hunter. So it was easy to make a run for CS. So in effect there are three knives, the original Hattori, Cold steel and Falkniven.

Fällknivens concept from the very beginning has been to clone other brands - especially Cold Steel. Peter - the founder - was the swedish importer of most high end brands in the 80's and in the early 90's he started to copy Cold Steels SRK and Hunter to be sold under his own brand Fällkniven (literally "The folding knife"). He secured a contract with the swedish armed forces and from there he went.

Both are made by Hattori in Japan.
@riggs999999
@riggs999999 2 года назад
Over the years there have been suggestions that Hattori was the maker of the Cold Steel Sanmai Trailmaster and the Fallkniven NL1 Thor based upon appearance, components, grind, and dimensional similarity. Those knife enthusiasts and collectors certainly have a keen eye. Dimension comparison: Hattori H160-1 Aus8 Overall: 375 mm (14 3/4″) Blade: 242 mm (9 1/2″) blade thickness: 6.8 mm (0.267″) Weight: 465 g (16.4 oz) Cold Steel Trail Master VG-1 core laminate (San Mai III). Overall: 14 1/2 ” Blade: 9 1/2″ Blade thickness: 5/16″ (0.31mm) Weight: 17.502 oz Fallkniven Northern Lights “Thor” NL1 VG-10 core laminate Overall: 15.15″ (385mm) Blade: 254 mm (10″) blade thickness: 7mm (0.28″) Weight: 520g (18.4 oz) Fallkniven Modern Bowie Cobalt Steel Laminated Overall : 15.23″ (387mm) Blade: 254 mm (10″) blade thickness: 7.41mm (0.29″) Weight: 565g (19.92 oz) The Hattori H-160 series and the Northern Light series share the exact same stainless guard, leather handle, pommel and screw, with different spacers. The current Cold Steel Sanmai Trailmaster uses a different stainless guard in the same shape as the brass ones used on their Carbon Steel models. However the early Aus6 and Aus8 core Sanmai Trailmasters used a stainless guard that is exactly like that of the H-160 and NL1 except that it is a mm or two thinner. The Fallkniven Lights NL1 Thor was introduced in 2002 and is the largest of the Northern Lights series. Originally shipped with a brown leather sheath with a Viking helmet logo, it now ships with a black leather one. There is little to say about this model other than that since it’s introduction it has been considered by many to be the best big bowie available today. The Cold Steel Trailmaster was introduced in 1987-198 and consequently has a long history, and a considerable following of it’s own. The very first ones were both made in the U.S. and in Japan with Carbon V, Cold Steel’s proprietary name for the carbon steel used. The ones made in Japan at this time are extremely rare. These early Trailmasters had a convex grind but then changed to a flat grind. The Trailmaster is a the classic big bowie with a 9 1/2″ blade, 14 1/2″ overall, a blade thickness of 5/16″, a full guard and a kraton handle. These dimensions and basic features have not changed over 28 years, although blade materials and country of origin have varied. In the 1990s Cold Steel offered another Trailmaster made in Japan using “400 Series Stainless” designated 16JS. This is called the 1st generation stainless TM and was only produced for a couple of years. A 2nd generation 16JS was made 1998-2001 using Aus6. It had a convex ground blade, called a rolled edge in the catalog, similar to the current VG1 Sanmai model. Early versions were marked on the ricasso, whereas later models were marked on the blade near the spine. These versions closely resemble the Sanmai version except that the word “Sanmai” and lamination line is missing. Taken fro “The Hattori Collector.com

I've had a Cold Steel Trailmaster and Kukri for 25 years, made in "Carbon V" whatever that is, they were made in the USA by Camillus when Camillus was an actual company. Amazing knives, but I always wanted that laminated one. Acquired one on sale several years ago for $210 USD, and it's great. For more than three times the prices I don't what a knife would have to do to justify such an expense. All of Cold Steels laminated stuff was made in Japan up until a few years ago when some of it went to Taiwan. The Trailmaster I have was made in Japan and I think it is the only one still made there. I love it. Now if someone gave me that Falkniven.....

Looks like they make the Cold Steel in 3V as well. Still less expensive than the Fallkniven.

They should make a folder, with triad lock out of it. Lynn Thompson would totally wear it on it's pocket.

Stinkhorns are known in Germany as "Stinkmorchel". They are edable when they are verry young and didn't grow a shaft. In this stadium they look like an egg and are called "Witches Egg" or Hexnei.

Gotta take the edge retention test lightly because we are comparing a factory CS edge with a custom resharpened FN. Taking the belt burn off a new blade changes the edge retention significantly. My VG1 San Mai SRK and Outdoorsman outperform my S1 by a large margin because the VG1 will only slightly roll while the VG10 micro chips. My testing is in wood and meat attached to bone only though.

split the difference (in price), and get the Trail Master in 3V. MUCH better steel than Fallkniven, and still cheaper (though you still get an arguably "inferior" sheath... but in this case [unlike the san mai] i think it comes down to preference. i just like leather)

Could've bought an Aurora scandi last week in A2 but I hesitated and they sold out so fast, I wish they would have done a cpm 3v option.

That Trailmaster used to be made out of Carbon-V (1095 Cro-Van) back in the 90's by Camillus. They also used to make a slightly smaller knife called the Recon Scout, also in Carbon-V. Nowadays, the Recon Scout is a medium sized folder - they re-used the name. But Cold Steel has a knife that looks suspiciously like the old Recon Scout - the Drop Forged Survivalist. Being a one-piece knife drop forged knife with small handle insert scales, the handle is different, but the blade profile and size are really similar.

Cold steel is coming out with a 3V version. It will be the best one. They are making a few other models in 3v like the recon scout etcetera. Please update the tests with the soon to be 3v model.
