Unless it's after June 10th, you probably haven't killed your Hardy Hibiscus. It's one of the last plants to leaf out every year. Netta's Nursery, Posen, Michigan www.nettasnursery.com
Thank you for the reassurance! All my other 14 hardy hibiscus' are sprouting except 5 of the head over heels series. I admit I was getting very nervous seeing NOTHING coming up, but it's only June 9th, I'll give them a little more time, & practice patience! Lol! I need to focus on getting all my other annuals planted while the hibiscus' sleep!
I started with 3 in large containers here in TX 9a 3 years ago. I now have 8 since dividing them this spring. Starry Starry Night variety. Very dark mahogany leaves with huge white to very pale pink petals all with dark burgundy eyes. One bloom measured 10.25" diameter! I don't dare try to put these in ground. Our soil here in SA is absolutely the most abominable on earth. 3" down I hit hard pan then pure sand. Ugh. Love my hardies!
They need lots of sun if you want them to bloom. I had to move 3 that I planted in a crowded area where they didn't get much sun. They are now about a foot tall but look much happier. Lots of water helps, too.
Do you think these would be ok between a pergola and a patio roof nearby?? i just got some candy crush for my patio and was afraid they would burn so i put them in a spot where they would have two chances to have some shade for a couple hours or so during the day but still get some good direct light as well..... *me biting my nails nervously right now* lol
I was given a hardy hibiscus 4 years ago. It has now overgrown its space. I sure can’t move it now, but plan to move it while it is dormant. Is there a way I can safely prune it to keep it a bit shorter and smaller this year?
You can trim them a bit when they reach 6-12” tall to keep them shorter and get fuller, but more than that and you risk losing blooms. I’ve never relocated one before… but we’ve had success with planting them bare root, so I’d say they are safe to move when dormant.
@@UpNorthGardenMI thanks. I had no idea it would get this big when I planted it. Right behind it is my favorite rose. They are way too close together. I would hate to lose the hibiscus, but would be more upset if I lost the rose!
@@UpNorthGardenMI The stems are very thick, so I just cut them back to about 3" above the ground. I haven't watered it since late Fall, but we'd gotten some good rain. I'll start watering it, if the rains slow down.
@@susankitchin325 Yep, cut 3-6" above ground. As long as the soil doesn't dry out, they will be fine -- it's when they start putting on growth that they really love water.
In our area, hardy hibiscus won’t be leafing out for at least another week - possibly two or three. Ask at your local garden center to find out when they should leaf out in your area.
