Update on the Hardy Hibiscus we moved in May of 2021.
This perennial hibiscus from the Summerific®️ Series from Proven Winners never skipped a beat when I transplanted it in Spring of 2022! This one is called “Perfect Storm”. These Hibiscus are hardy in zones 4-9 and can take full to part Sun. They come in a variety of heights and widths so do be sure and read the tag on the particular one you purchase. This perennial grows in a shrub form.
Do plan on giving this perennial plenty of space to grow. The Summerific®️series are very hardy growers! As with all perennial hibiscus, they like well draining soil and at the same time, can thrive in a bit of a boggy area. They like consistent moisture.
You can fertilize this perennial with a slow release fertilizer in early spring just after it breaks dormancy. I use Plant Tone by Espoma and sprinkle it around the plants and water it in well.
Proven Winners recommends leaving the stems during the winter and pruning them back to 6” in early spring.
The other variety I am planting in the Summerific®️ series is Holy Grail. This one has very dark foliage with a beautiful deep crimson bloom.
Here’s the full video of when we transplanted this perennial:

Great job! I had 4 Starry Starry Night hardy hibiscus very similar to your's. I kept them in containers here in Zone 9a in TX for 2 years. I dumped them out the 3rd spring and divided them. That was 2 years ago and I now have 8! They reach about 3' tall e en in containers. No beetle problems here but they dry out very quickly in their containers. The soil here is awful, my auger can't get thru the rocks, hence containers! I do remove spent blooms daily. I spray buds with neem oil to prevent leaf hoppers. I apply a dose of bloom booster just prior to them opening. Some flowers reach over 10" across. I love them.

Thank you for this episode. You mentioned the most important aspects to raising this Hibiscus, especially when and how to prune, fertilize, zone, and water. If your channel is sponsored by Proven Winners, I suggest that this important information should be written on the screen to allow us gardeners to get the right information. Sometimes, the spoken words are not decipherable at our end. Thank you.

Bobbi, those are both beautiful hibiscus varieties, and yes, most perennials seem to grow larger than the tag says they will. I have 2 different ones (both with the deep maroon foliage and they are gorgeous with huge blooms. Last fall I saved seeds from one of the plants and winter sowed two water jugs with them this spring. I planted 5 seeds per water jug and now I have 7 new hardy hibiscus plants growing and they all have dark foliage. I can't wait to see what color the blooms will be because someone near me has hardy hibiscus plants that may have cross-pollinated with mine. They won't bloom this year, but they should next year if they survive the winter. Have a great week! ~Margie😊💚🦋

Is that plant deer resistant? I’m getting mixed reviews but yours looks good.
@GardeningOnTaylorMountain
@GardeningOnTaylorMountain 6 месяцев назад
The Proven Winners description claims the Summerific series is deer resistant. I live in an area with deer traffic and mine have never been eaten by the deer. However, I do not know positively that these are deer resistant. I have never sprayed mine with Liquid Fence to deter the deer by I certainly use it on other perennials, trees and shrubs that the deer seem to like. Liquid Fence has always worked for me. That could be an option if you want to plant a hardy Hibiscus but are concerned about deer pressure. Hope this helps!

I love this video, it has a lot of info... My question is after I planted my 2 Tropical Hibiscus outside in the ground (Birmingham, Alabama Home) both producing beautiful red flowers, and adding Miracle Grow plant soil with the dirt all is well with both plants until the temperature went down in the higher 50s and some nights 60 the leaves have been turning yellow so my question will the winter months kill both plants or could I save them. I just bought 1 Hady Hibiscus a day ago and should I do up one of the Tropical Hibiscus PLANTS AND PLANT THE HARDY ONE OR WAIT UNTIL OR A LITTLE BEFORE SPRING? Thanks for ANY HELP.
@GardeningOnTaylorMountain
@GardeningOnTaylorMountain 9 месяцев назад
Hi there! The first thing to note is the hardiness growing zone for your area. From what I found, your hardiness zone is 7b-8a. The hardiness zone for tropical hibiscus is zones 9-11. The tropical hibiscus will not survive the winter in your growing zone. If you want to keep them, you’ll have to bring them indoors for the winter and take them back outside when the weather warms up in late Spring. Keep them in a sunny, warm location in the house. As for your hardy hibiscus, they are hardy in zones 4-9. You should plant that outside now. Don’t wait too much longer because the roots need time to establish before winter. Do not feed the hardy hibiscus with Miracle Gro because the hardy hibiscus is a perennial. You can feed that in the Spring after it breaks dormancy with a perennial food such as Espoma Plant Tone. I hope this answers your questions. Thanks for watching!
@ndhudecz
@ndhudecz 9 месяцев назад
Thank You!!!@@GardeningOnTaylorMountainThat does help but I have one more question! After the winter and it becomes spring will the leaves and flowering come back?
@GardeningOnTaylorMountain
@GardeningOnTaylorMountain 9 месяцев назад
@@ndhudeczthe hardy hibiscus will start coming to life in late Spring (it’s one of the last perennials to break dormancy). I don’t have a lot of experience with Tropical hibiscus but it will probably slow down quite a bit if you bring it indoors over the winter and then it should start putting on new growth when you take it back outdoors in the summer. Their native habitat is hot, tropical climate.

Hi Its mid June in California, and my Summerific leaves are yellowing, there are no flowers yet...only buds. Its getting kind of big for the barrel its planted in, should it be replanted in the ground? Thanks
@GardeningOnTaylorMountain
@GardeningOnTaylorMountain 25 дней назад
Hi! Yes, I would definitely say replant it in the ground. It is most likely root bound and the roots are not able to take up the water and nutrients it needs. Make sure and give it plenty of water and add some good compost to the planting hole and around the Hibiscus if you do plant it out in the ground. Hope this works for you!
@tony2tiger1
@tony2tiger1 10 месяцев назад
What fertilizers if any do you suggest when transplanting. I will need to transplant my Mother's Hibiscus when I move and need some pointers. I figure a good bag of top soil won't hurt. What is a good time of year to do this?? Thoughts?

Hi there! I transplanted this one in early May before it got too large and the weather turned too warm. It had about 6” of growth on it. I used BioTone Starter Fertilizer by Espoma in the planting hole and then mixed in some good compost with the native soil. I made sure to keep it well watered the first year after I transplanted it. Hope this helps!

use peppermint essential oil mix with water and spray your plant when you see ANY kind of bug infestation. Works every time and is not toxic to the plant.
@GardeningOnTaylorMountain
@GardeningOnTaylorMountain 10 месяцев назад
Great reminder! I’ve used peppermint essential oil spray on indoor plants for bugs and fungus but have not used it outdoors. I used Castile soap spray on my pro cut sunflowers to take care of the ants when I use the pro cuts for bouquets. I will definitely try the peppermint oil. Thanks for sharing!
