Saw that series between India and England. And I totally agree with what Harsha Bhogle said about it. He said, in the end, India only had to take 7-8 wickets each innings. England was gifting them 2-3 wickets every time.

"be the best version of yourself" is a fine sentiment and might work for the favourites, but it is blatently untrue when you look at Foakes - dumped because he doesn't score fast enough with the tail. That's not giving him confidence to go out and play his game. If Bazball really was about getting the best out of the best players then Foakes should have batted at 5 in India and been allowed to play his natural game (a county number 5 who builds an innings alongside other proper batters). They are still caught up in the media hype of outrageous fast scoring and risk taking!
@JoshF848
@JoshF848 16 дней назад
Stokes has also said that if a young Alastair Cook was coming through the ranks now, he wouldn't pick him. He has a clear idea of the type of team he wants and certain players don't fit into that. As for Foakes specifically, if I was in charge I'd have played him a lot more but he does now average under 30 - that can't all be blamed on getting stuck batting with the tail, he has failed plenty of times with a set batter at the other end also. Too often he was getting bogged down, lacking a way to release the pressure against the very best bowlers. Also worth pointing out that he was more attacking in his first few years of county cricket, and had some success with the white ball too. It was his choice to focus entirely on batting at 5 against the red ball, it was a great choice for Surrey but was obviously going to harm his international chances.

@anubhav111196 16 дней назад
That’s true, they let the media sentiment sway them, I heard somebody saying that bazball is about being positive but what it seems like is that English batsmen only took the ‘playing quick’ part from it and not took ‘building the innings while still be in a position to win the game’

As I understood it, the one unique aspect of test cricket was to bat as long as possible not only to accumulate runs but also to tire out opposition bowlers so that they have less to give in 2nd innings and as the series progress that workload manifest itself in making batsman life easier the longer they play. "Bazball " has given away that crucial advantage willingly.

“It should have been 2-2 before the fifth test.” I really dislike these nonsensical hypothetical arguments. Yeah it could have been 2-2 but it could easily have been 4-0, in fact it was closer to the latter than the former. Ollie Pope was dropped how many times again?

The style of cricket is not the problem. The arrogance was the problem. Making stupid decisions out of arrogance is what looses them games. Happened in the Ashes and happened in India. Root trying to reverse sweep Bumrah, if I remember right, has got to be one of the symbols of Bazball stupidity. But more than that, it was the rubbish some of the players said in the media that irked fans. When you are last on the WTC table, losing 1-4, and you failed to win the Ashes, then those statements sound genuinely delusional.

Kimber saying that other teams adopted some aspects of bazball is disingenuous. Others didn't. It's like claiming that virendar sehwag somehow time traveled to the future, got the idea from England and then adopted it in back in his own time. Or the stupid claim that yashaswi jaiswal was copying the idea... That's so stupid.

Bazball in concept is very negative. At least in the series against India it was. England almost always played 4 bowlers and were struggling to take 20 wickets each game. They ended up taking 78/100 available wickets, and India took all 100. England throwing away a few sure helped, but India had some of their all time greats in that attack, and England were never competing in that department. The onus and eyeballs are always on the batters in Bazball. It will almost never work against better quality attacks especially when the conditions do not suit the English bowlers. The game that England won, they won by 28 runs or something like that. Pretty close. This after they had India for like some 100/7. Rest of the games were pretty one sided. 100 runs, 400 odd runs, 5 wickets, an innings and so on. 4-1 is flattering England a lot, especially with the bowling they had. I think that England will end up preparing flat wickets in England where they will feel like they can chase anything (300-400) against lesser attacks like Windies and Sri Lanka. The real challenge will come when they play India or Australia with much better bowling attacks who can actually defend scores.

If England would have really given any real hedaches, it would have reflected in a 3-2 result. Truth is, Indian cricket was much better than English cricket and English cricket was just making schoolboy errors of being egoistic and aggressive on everything as they kept losing in the series. England turned up in India with an attack full pf bowlers with asterisks against their names: Anderson *too old to bowl long enough; Wood *too fragile to bowl long enough; Bahsser, Hartley, Rehan *too young and experienced to bowl well enough for long enough. The idea that it could have been 2-2 going into the last Test is ridiculous. The one Test they won was on the back of a freak innings by Pope where he survived the highest percentage of false shots ever.
@regalalien
@regalalien 16 дней назад
Is Bazball tactics? Strategy? Harmy suggests it's some kind of self-affirmation mantra. Duckett thought it was a proxy for good defensive technique. Ultimately lasting success in Test cricket depends on having really good players working together as a team. One objective measure of goodness is the ICC Test player rankings. England have 3 of the top 20 batsmen in the world and 2 of the top 20 bowlers. For comparison, Australia have 4 and 4 respectively, and India have 5 and 4 respectively. In a 11-player team, these numbers mean something. Factor in that neither of England's two top 20 bowlers will be playing the Ashes in Australia in 2025 and you have to rely on Archer and Wood to be injury free if you want to have bowlers with some experience. It doesn't look promising.

In all honesty, sirs, your analysis of English performance is getting blinded by the glamour of fast paced slogging of "bazball". If England could have managed a 2-2 in this eries, one could say India should have won 2018 series 2-1 rather than losing 1-4. What's England W/L ratio in current WTC cycle? 3/6, England sits at the bottom of the table. It works on lesser teams better teams will simply outplay you. Australia and India have already proven it, SA and NZ can very well match it. Hardly any good test teams left are there?

There were so many players who did aggressive batting at the start of their innings way earlier than what we are seeing now as a new fad. From the legend Don Bradman, Vivian Richards, K Srikanth, Vinod Kambli, Sanath Jayasurya, Virendra Sehwag, Gilchrist , M Hayden, H Gibbs, ABD and eventually M Slater and that carried onto English team during his coaching which English people have got this crazy obsession of Labeling nonsense which is so alike Americans too who do the same, *Labeling Forced Fad Branding culture*. They labelled this and promoted it as if they invented it and aggressively talk about it if no one ever done it, and each time they beat around it as, "This is not that, that is not this" kind of argument. Rather than running around labeling and promoting, just accept that there are players who played it far better and effectively and has been for ages than all these. Than more than trying hard to self proclaim as ITS ENGLISH STYLE, you can just play and win. And winning makes a huge difference. Indians who did played this many times before just played and won. Simple. They weren't running after labeling bullshit and promoting it as if THEY DID THIS kind of ego trip. England team currently need a clear headed straight forward self introspective Coach and just like that a Captain who just speaks facts, than all these nonsensical trumpeting of BS. England team started hyping Bazball in 2016 and it worked great for them, 2019 was a prime example of that. They were ruthless and the mind games were plenty on display. As with every ploy, it chips off slowly before coming to a full stop. They got caught rather opposition started reading their game pretty well especially Australia and India. England needs to come up with something new.

I think Australia started aggressive way of batting in tests. They averaged 4+ in their batting when rest of the teams were below 3. And yes Sehwag upfront as an opener helped our team to score quickly. But Baz ball I feel its more than batting. Its taking aggressive decisions with our giving opposition time to breathe whether its batting or fielding.

They're still spouting the bs about playing without doubt or fear etc.. in some ways I'm surprised. Harmison was a pro cricketer. Is he saying he played with fear and doubt? What about his peers? Now he was a bowler but "Bazball" is really all about batting. Did Hammond, Hutton, May, Dexter, Boycott, Gooch, Edrich, to name a few, lack the mental strength now shown by mediocrities like Crawley, Duckett, Pope? But more than , that the 1,000s of cricketers who wore the 3 lions before them: did they all have it wrong, waiting for Baz McCullum to show them the way? No, the fact that they made it to test level means they had the necessary belief in their abilities. It's the sheer ignorance of it all that gets me. And the arrogance, born of ignorance. Witness Stokes telling people that seeing him enriched their lives. Everyone who played test cricket wrestled with doubts and fears and some overcame and some didnt. Playing "white ball" batting works against weak teams but not against equals or betters. Playing aggressively goes back to Warwick Armstrong in Oz and has been carried forward by Bradman, Benaud, Chappell, Waugh and now Cummins to name a few. Yes, perhaps, it's not been the English way but Illingworth was pretty aggressive as, in his own way, was Brearley. The "bottom line" was well-stated by Kimber: a lineup of bats with averages in the 30s (Root excepted, Brook to be seen) isnt going to get it done vs India and Oz.

Every English cricket expert has been hell bent on propagating bazball as the greatest evolution in test cricket. They got beaten comprehensively in India but still not woken up to reality. Jarrod is correct in saying mediocrity of English batters forces them to play aggressively and try to hide their shortcomings.

Bazball is good if only 1-2 players play in the aggressive way,while other players consolidate the innings....if the whole team will tun with same gear, there are higher chances of collapses,which happened many times with england....one or two aggressive players are there in almost every good test side,cause they are the game changers,while if whole team does that,it is gonna fail

Let me tell you folks that series didn't kill bazball. It murdered it. Yesterday England was going at max 4.72 against windies. You know Jaiswal and Rohit went at 7.23 against England at one stage. Let me tell you 18 months from today BazBall would be put to coffin in Adelaide, Australia 1st Test.

Why nobody is talking about how India played without their full strength batting strength (only Rohit and Gill was there)... cause when India won the series in Australia in 2018 everyone was saying that it's because Smith and Warner was absent

I generally like steve harmison commentary and analysis. Issue in india is that Kuldeep and Axar Patel are clever spinners. You cant hit them out like they can do with ashwin. Ashwin need beach sand dust bowl pitch , otherwise he is a weak spinner. Kuldeep and axar is beast even if pitch give small amount of spin. Key though indian crowd energy. The 12th man with smart spinners. There is only team can mirror what england does on bazball is australia. Aussies will route england. aussies are ok team but they are smart team

Jarrod is simply wrong about how the English bats "change the length" of the bowlers. That's what separates great from good, good from mediocre from the the invention of cricket and at every level.! Great bats dont allow bowlers to set a length. Most bats cant do this. Consider the GOAT - Bradman. Bowlers had nowhere to bowl to him. If it were a hair short he'd pull it; if it were a hair long he'd drive. This is true of the all the greats subsequently. The idea that bowlers cant find a length because Pope is slogging is ludicrous. They know he, and others, might get away with it for a while (in the India innings they cite he was incredibly lucky) but he's a 35 average. As for the sweep and reverse sweep putting the fear of god into spinners, just replay recordings the India series. Total disaster. Even Root drank the koolaid and only became himself when he stopped with the sweeps. (To be pedantic, they're "laps" not sweeps. A sweep is a perfectly fine shot to a ball on leg or outside; a lap is the same stroke to a ball on the stumps or outside off. Reverse sweeps are incredibly stupid because a ball outside off can garner an lbw which is not the case for an actual sweep; they make certain amount of sense in whiteball but none in redball.

We didn't have bumrah, Ashwin, Jadeja or we would have beaten india. What a dumb argument. It's like us saying if ms dhoni had Anderson,broad with him he would have beaten England in England. U didn't have them bcz ur system doesn't prioritise spinners.

You can bazzball when you bat. You can't bazzbowl. When you bazball, the opposition has got more time to bat. And bat normally. That is almost like gifting the opposition a win.

I think in next 4-5 years india is going to be the team who will dominate test cricket . Looking at other teams who can challenge india is england and australia and they are already in declining there bowling attacks are becoming weak ..after jimmi and broad there are no bowlers at that level to represent them and on the other hand australia did not have quality spinner and opening slot is also vunerable and indian bowling attack is getting better by inclusion of atshdeep . ❤

British discovered Sehwag from old video, with a carrier Test match Strike rate of 82.23, with 23 hundreds and 32 fifties and couple of 300 scored in a single day. Looted Sehwag play to make it their own discovery of a new fancy name Bazball, just like the stole "LOOT" word from India long time back. Story to relate - British Husband (looking at sun) : "look honey that shiny white ball in sky i just discovered after all that rain, I am going to call it Fireball" Wife ":What a idiot its been there SINCE BEFORE YOU WERE BORN" PS: And Before Sehwag, there was Viv Richards, sorry to say british were too late to the party.
