all the "the doctors name is soooo important" stuff from moffats era is hilariously stupid once you realize he got the name doctor after he kidnapped ian and barbara and they just kept calling him doctor over and over because he wouldn't give them an actual name to call him and after a while he just started. answering to doctor. objectively the funniest name origin story

I feel as if I should say that the scene of him writhing on the floor isn't from the shame of failure, but instead from the pain of dying all across countless points in his life. He feels it all, every ounce of pain from dying again and again and again

The part with the children being disinterested by the letter seems fine to me. They went through a pretty dangerous ordeal, so I wouldn't be surprised if they've learnt not to let their curiosities get the better of them. That or a perception filter was put around the letter for all except Clara, which is probably why only she read it and the others didn't care.

Instead of the War Doctor it would have been cool if we saw the Great Intelligence having entered the Doctors Timeline reappear as the Shalkra Doctor that would have been a great twist.

This episode slays on a first watch. It's a bit weak on a rewatch but honestly still thoroughly enjoyable. It's def moffat on autopilot though, understandable with Sherlock and TinTin tho and the 50th being a nightmare

Out of all the doctor who episodes, this certainly was one of them.

The whisper men are honestly overlooked as dw villains. I feel like their design should've been used for an actual alien instead of just the great intelligence again.

My theory on the Doctor's name is that it's literally Doctor Who. Whenever someone asks his name they say "Doctor Who?" and he says "Just The Doctor" because he's trying to steer them away from thinking of his actual name, instead getting them to call him something similar, but slightly different. His real name being Doctor Who would be mirrored by his TARDIS, the one thing that's inseparable from him, also being something that hides in plain sight yet still works as a disguise. As for why he'd hide "Doctor Who" so passionately, well River (who knows the Doctor's real name) in Series 6 heavily suggested that the word "Doctor", meaning "healer or wise man" originated as a word throughout the universe because of The Doctor acting throughout the universe as a healer and wise man and thus paradoxically creating the word his past self would name himself after. River then warns that if he stops acting as a healer or wise man, but instead a warrior, that the meaning of the word would change. The thing is, if the meaning of the word changed to mean something other than healer or wise man, then The Doctor starting off would never pick "The Doctor" as his alias in the first place, in turn creating a paradox. And while the effects of paradoxes aren't consistent in Doctor Who, they're consistently always disastrous. And so the reason The Doctor not only fights to keep his name secret but also constantly fights to act as a doctor throughout the universe, isn't because his original name (Doctor Who) is anything worth hiding, but because he needs the meaning of his false name (The Doctor) to stay a representation of what he is, so that the word for healer/wise man becomes doctor, so that he picks it to begin with, and prevents the paradox. And so he renames himself from "Doctor Who?" - a question asking to specify the word "Doctor" - to "The Doctor" - the definite article - THE Doctor from which all others are based off - the original definition of the word. This explains why the main plot of the episode "Name of the Doctor" features the name of the Doctor being used to access his timestream, to which a malevolent force then enters his timestream and kills him at every point of his life, thus erasing him in the present. This is literally a representation of what would happen should The Doctor have instead used his original name - one which is still asking for the definition of the word. The effects would be so wide reaching that he'd literally be erased from time, like he nearly was in this episode. He needs to become The Doctor, so that all the cultures influenced by him would then know to name "Doctor" as the word for healer/wise man. Does that make sense?

as much as i dislike this episode, "but not in the name of the doctor" might just be one of the greatest quotes in this show's history. Alluding to the timeless question and essentially telling the audience that their name is irrelevant, it's "the Doctor" that matters and how much he identifies with that title that it's synonymous with him.

"from the heart and not the head" You've encapsulated almost everything I hate about Moffat's era.

High praise from Harry there, giving it a 9/10.

I actually like this episode a lot, flaws and all. Even though the pacing is a little weird, I really liked how slow the plot was and all the atmosphere. 11's era really doesn't slow down often enough.

I never liked ending. Big secret he’d take to his grave is he ended the war…in a different body. That’s not really a secret; he wouldn’t shut up about how he ended the time war

i feel like it should've been Paul McGann, not John Hurt

As much as i love John Hurt, the massive missed opportunity for BBC to have made their peace with Christopher Eccleston haunts me... Instead of just a random Old man Dr that throws away his title for the war, We would have got this Dark harrowing story that really highlights that dark place 9 was in during season 1 and show us just how much the War broke him... Could you imagine what Eccleston could have done with that material and how well Him and Smith could have rebounded of each other... An actual tragedy... Not to mention Christopher, David and Matt all coming together for the 50th anniversary would have been unforgettable and I can't help but think instead of this sad old man character the war Dr ends up being with the episode being realitivly light hearted through-out, we would have actually got a sinister character driven episode showcasing how far 9 was actually willing to go during the war and how Tennant and Smith's Drs each deal with that.

What I don't understand is why this whole season is not in the Doctor playlist and I have to search for each one manually.

Yer no missing much, Glasgow is a grid ironed street pattern nightmare. A fight every night cheers the place up, also thank you I was not sure when the anniversary was coming out.

I feel like the focus on the 50th and Moffat doing Sherlock effected series 7 badly

Glasgow IS a center of hypermasculin violence... except it's chavs with potato peelers and ASBO's.. I'm a local so it's accurate information. This episode was done well, it's a shame that it got entirely retconned. her entire thing was the impossible girl, the girl who saves the doctor... the girl who jumps into his time stream but because 11th didn't die and instead regenerated, it means his grave isn't there and neither is the giant TARDIS... so yeah.

I am kinda of disappointed with the use of the intelligence, (called G.I), he or it since it made of pure data, they are reframed many times as a being who end goal to have a body of flesh, so why it want to kill the doctor? I don't know, maybe we see him again, I was kind of disappointed with the use of the intelligence since we seen him three short appearance and it would be cool if he had more screen time, maybe in one episode where the intelligence try's to build a body of flesh, still I don't mind

Next to Weeding of River Song it’s the most stereotypical Moffat episode ever. Drivel that falls over itself in a mad dash to become as convoluted and self-important as possible. Cringey moments, explanations that don’t explain anything, characters just being able to know and explain what is happening without a logical reason to know. An original Moffat character (in this instance Clara) becoming the most important person in the universe. Pretending that the Doctor might die for real even though we know he won’t. All in all it forces itself to become such a deep cut episode that nobody who hasn’t watched the whole Smith era up till this point will be able to follow what’s going on. It’s all so self important, cheesy and “Yaas Queen”ified that it forgets to be a good episode or bother making sense to casual viewers.

Well she is now the DNA of the universe and the anchor of the series. you're welcome. she is about to tell Peter Capaldi that she hates him because he is old (or, just 'looks old now', really), because for some 'was this written by aliens(?)' reason, the BBC thought *that* would be the audience reaction to the much beloved and anticipated PC. (PS. it wasnt)

This episode, like most Clara centred episodes, wasn't very good.

This series was a big mess, this episode could’ve been better. I’d give it a 5/10 MAX because they clickabited tf out of this episode with the title. Plus, Clara needed to go away by this point. Impossible girl my ass, how you jumping into a time fracture (or whatever it was, I’d zoned out by that point) when you met the doctor not too long ago? Ready to end your life because you fancy someone 😂 Clara.. I beg you.

IMO This was a typical Moffat episode: great elements, POOR execution. Doctor visiting his grave. Excellent. The exterior of the Tardis: excellent. GI: Excellent. The GI going back in the Doctor's life cycle to kill him: Excellent. But the three side characters were dull. I don't care about seeing River, (too smarmy and too much of a know it all in my opinion), too much exposition, Clara going back and saving the Doctor was cringe (especially with all the classic scenes they photoshopped her in) and worst of all, NO pay off of Clara stopping the GI in Day of The Doctor.

This review definitely loses points for not reminding us of the DUMBEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN ON TV "But not in the name of the Doctor!" .... Introducing JOHN HURT as THE DOCTOR

River song...even though she's dead she still comes back...never going to get rid of that woman are we? She made series 6 insufferable and even when she's dead she comes back.....
