MRocky323 So was The Master, if you recall from the TV movie... CAL's a pretty smart computer. She can 3D print a new body for her, and The Doctor, as Time Lord President, can infuse her with a new cycle.
@@ChristopherUSSmith Because she isn't a Timelady. She is a woman who was concived in the TARDIS so has a little of Time Vortex energy in her, but not a complete Timelady so Timelords rules don't work with her and they don't have any interest in saving her (the Doctor and the Master were proven to be useful time to time)
I love how poetic the conclusion to Clara's "Impossible Girl" storyline. The Doctor treats her like a mystery, an object, rather than an actual human being, despite being constantly proven wrong and called out on it (seeing Clara's past, "she's an ordinary girl", "I'm not a ghost", "I don't know what you're talking about", etc), and, since we see the story from his viewpoint, we see her the same way and ignore all the clues to the contrary. She's just too good to be true, the perfect companion. On the first glance that is. I won't go into Clara's personality now, but it's a great topic to discuss later on, in view of all the "she has no personality" criticisms. But in this episode, Clara starts to believe this narrative as well - "I was born to save the Doctor" - and is consequently proven wrong, just like the Doctor so many times in earlier episodes: she doesn't die in the time stream because her life doesn't revolve around the Doctor. She's created her echoes, made the ultimate sacrifice out of her own free will, and her reward is to live, be herself, not just a replacement or a mystery. It's very poetic and, simply put, beautiful writing.
River Song as a character is so brilliantly written. She’s dead the first time we met her, we saw the literal ending of her story but it was just the beginning and it just blossomed from there.
Moffat is known for comedy before DW, but no one has made me cry as much as him, when he pours on the feels. * The Girl in the Fireplace * Silence in the Library + Forest of the Dead * The Beast Below * The Pandorica Opens + The Big Bang * A Good Man Goes to War * The Wedding of River Song * The Angels Take Manhattan * The Snowmen * The Name of the Doctor * The Day of the Doctor * The Time of the Doctor * The Husbands of River Song All of these (written by him), and probably others have scenes that tug very hard on our heartstrings. It takes a lot of smarts to come-up with comedy that works. These episodes show us what he can do when he wants to make us sad.
The ending of this episode was one of the biggest wtf moments in the show history in my opinion. We had to wait awhile to find out what john hurt was to this show.
I love Clara meeting River, and Madame Vastra’s consternation at trying to introduce them: “Doctor’s wife, meet the woman he’s crushing on. Doctor’s crush, this is his wife. I’m going to need a drink.”
Kayra Youvmir Well she does seem the type to date/marry people with swappable heads. And it seems she lives in or around Captain Jack’s original time zone. I wouldn’t be surprised if she were up for anything.
20:02 I wonder if the reason Clara knew which Tardis was the Doctor's was because the Tardis knew HER? Remember, we know that the Tardis is conscious and that she has trouble with tenses; odds are good that the Tardis recognized Clara, and even that the two of them formed a plan to get the Doctor into his Tardis. This is my new favorite headcanon: that Clara didn't pick the Tardis for the Doctor, but that the Tardis had a major role to play in it as well.
That also makes sense with the line in the Doctor's Wife when Idris/the Tardis tells the doctor she chose him, not the other way around. There should be a whole short story about the interactions between Clara and the TARDIS that lead up to that moment.
Borrowing implies the eventual intention to return the thing that was taken. What makes you think I would ever give you back? -TARDIS That episode got me in the feels 😭
The River and Doctor scene is so much sadder when you think that from her point of view, she has seen him younger than this, saving her in the library. And before that, she spent 24 years of marriage with his older version, who knew about this moment, and yet she didn't as they spent that honeymoon together.
One of the HUGE moments in this episode is that we see the first ever footage of the Doctor from a time *before* he began his adventures in "An Unearthly Child" in 1963. We get to see the very moment that he actually stole the TARDIS with Susan, and it even answered one of the age-old fan questions... what does a TARDIS look like when the Chameleon Circuit is shut off and it's in it's natural state? (This was, of course, before it broke and got stuck as a Police Box, also in "An Unearthly Child".) A great way to kick off the Fiftieth Anniversary!
Actually, those were SIDRATs (TARDIS spelled backwards). They were a similar but more limited space and time machine used by the War Lord. The similarity of the exterior shell though was implied, you are correct.
If you ever listen to the Big Finish story The Beginning, you actually hear this exact moment from Susan's point of view. Steven Moffat actually communicated with Big Finish regarding the fact that the Doctor talks to "someone" before stealing another TARDIS. Susan never learns that it was one of the Claras and, confused, is escorted by her grandfather to the other TARDIS. It's woven in very well.
@@vasyear Wdym? I agree with War, but 10 was much darker and angrier than 12, 10 just hid it better. 7 was also much darker than 12. 12 is probably the kindest incarnation of the doctor despite his general grumpiness
@@kaitosevski3881 In the serial “Trail of a time lord” the master says “There is some evil in all of us Doctor, even you. The Valyeard is an amalgamation of the darker sides of your nature somewhere between your 12 and final incarnation.” Between the war doctor and the 11th doctor they spent around 700 years or so years in a state of war and even the 10th doctor said he killed a hell’va lot in the war “I’ve killed but what’s worse, I got smart about it” or words to that effect and with the 12th doctor well he went nuts after what happened to Clara so three instances of the doctors darkness well four if you include the 13th’s disgusting disregard for Graham’s worries about his cancer returning.
@@vasyear 13 didn't have disregard for Graham's fear of cancer returning, she just didn't know what to say. She was speechless. Because it's a hard subject to say something on, and in that moment it was better for her to keep quiet than to say something and it most likely coming out the wrong way
"They cared for me during the dark times." For those that caught it, like Jess, there's a TON of meaning behind that simple comment. I like that they didn't over explain it or harp on it. You either understood their history and got it, or you didn't and it didn't ruin your understanding of this story. I love it when writers don't explain everything and trust the audience to notice.
Kaldor Kandoka borrowing suggests an intent to return...what makes you think the TARDIS would ever give him back? (Had to drop the quote from Doctor’s wife...was just too perfect a setup)
This episode has one of my favorite things that Moffatt introduced into the canon. The idea of The Doctor as an aspiration that the character strives to live up to. When this episode aired, we all were as shocked as you are and tried to figure out where this unknown version of the Doctor existed. There were so many theories. I loved that last scene with River.
yay, I love this episode so much! That bit when 11 (Smith) gets emotional hearing about River Song & Trenzelor was so moving & powerfully acted. And that bit with 11/River at the end? *sobs* Also I love Clara's arc in this story!
HERE WE FREAKING GO! I love how your face just dropped at the beginning. Strax is amazing. All that confusion about why Clara was a Dalek pays off, she splintered through time and became Oswin, as she became Clara in Victorian London. That sweet Eleven/River conversation kills me. It was beautiful and I loved it so much. I remember how I reacted to the ending of this episode, screaming at the TV, having a great feeling who this incarnation was during his life. It was a golden time for me!
John 'Sepp' Schiltz I believe it was called "Millenial Rights." It was indeed one of the New Adventures line, a 1990s publication if I remember rightly.
John 'Sepp' Schiltz You are not getting anything for 25p these days. I was similar myself; back when I was in Primary School the school library had _Doctor Who and the Daleks, Doctor Who and the Abominable Snowmen and Doctor Who and the Auton Imvasion_ and I made it a mission to read them all. PS There was another that I can't remember the name of; had knights, and ants trying to eat someone as a form of torture. Hartnell story.
As someone amazing once said "WOAH, WOAH, WOAH"!!! This had everything! Emotional Clara reactions. Excited River reactions. Hilarious Strax reactions. Confused John Hurt reactions lol. It was perfect!!! Also, Matt Smith and Alex Kingston have always had perfect chemistry together, but that scene between them at the end was just incredible!! Now I'm counting down the days to DW December!! I CAN'T WAIT!!! I really appreciate the anticipation and excitement you're creating for us!! THANK YOU!!
"Woah, woah, WOAH...I have chills already, HOLY SHIT!" Phenomenal reactions to an absolutely epic episode. The Whispermen attack during the conference call was one of the most chilling things I've ever seen in Who. I adore the scene with River and the Doctor and as for that ending well .... Who knows??? "Is it Bob?" lol - Brilliant Jess, and its not even December yet!!! :D
Watching this back really makes you appreciate how great this episode was with all of its moments that conclude & bring together so much, truly wonderful. Reaction was a joy to watch :)
Back in the day, we knew, that they cast John Hurt, but when that text appeared on screen "Introducing John Hurt as THE DOCTOR" I was just like "Huh?? THE DOCTOR??? Like, WTF?????" And then we had to wait.....months.....for the next episode........
I felt the same way when I saw John Hurt introduced as The Doctor at the end. The Anniversary episode should answer your questions if you haven't seen it yet. :-)
Literally 80% of comments advising Jess what to watch next - she has a list of everything required, including minisodes, and in the correct order - stay calm, people!!
THANKYOU Mark McKeown this was to be probably her 22000th comment to watch night before day but you have put my mind at rest cant wait for doctor who December!!!!!
I have an advise about what to watch before "The Time of the Doctor. It would be wonderful if she rewatch "The Wedding of River Song" (6th Season finale), specially Dorium Maldovar speechs, at 10;00-11:31 and 44:00-end. In these parts, Dorium speaks about the prophecies concerning the "fall of the eleven" and it is very interesting to see how they are fulfilled.
Fun Fact: He wasn't meant to be in this episode, it was originally going to be Christopher Eccleston but he refused multiple times (hence in Dalek he says "I made it happen" in referrence to his incarnation) so they had to re-write this and the 50th special to accomodate bringing in another incarnation
Well that's probably because it was re-written, he actually did outright refuse it. www.radiotimes.com/news/2015-11-23/steven-moffat-finally-reveals-why-john-hurt-replaced-christopher-eccleston-in-the-doctor-who-50th-anniversary-special/
Still holding out hope for an 8th doctor TV mini-series (maybe just a single year series inbetween the current doctor with the title "8th Doctor Adventures" or something). his audio dramas are pretty top notch.
Long before this episode, I always had pictured the Ninth Doctor as the PTSD regeneration, having gone through so much in the Time War that it took him a whole regeneration to work through the trauma of what had happened and he’d been forced to do. The repressed regeneration actually makes more sense, and it is just a crying shame that John Hurt is no longer with us to flesh out some more of his part in the Time War. Can but hold out hope that McGann is given a chance to do so for his part in the run up to his regeneration
Land976 - I would love a parallel series of the 8th Doctor to run along side Series 11. It would certainly keep the anti-female Doctor fans happy...I dare say it would probably blow the parent series out of the water.
And as usual the finale hits all the all right emotional spots. I enjoyed it even more this time round. And I adored the looks of bafflement and wonder and love in the reaction - especially when they were showing those wee references and clips that can't really mean quite as much to New Whovians as they do to old farts like me who were there in the beginning. Thank you again for the reactions and for the chance to relive albeit vicariously the first time round.
I love how in the first minute your hand had to come up because you couldn't drop your jaw any further. This reaction was every bit as good as I had hoped. Looking forward to December!
I don't think I've ever seen you look so surprised as you did at the beginning of this episode. Your face. I wasn't sure if you were breathing. This was a really good episode and you've got some grand ones ahead. The Fall of 2013 was an amazing time for Whovians. You may be late to the party, but we welcome you. I'm sure everyone is telling you what to watch next, so I won't bother. I hope no one spoils even one secnd of the next few episodes for you. Big stuff!
I just want to say that I love these. I love it when you post another one. I just wish the BBC wouldn't give you so much crap over using the footage. Other reactors use more footage that you do. Its like they're picking on you. Its not fair.
I finally crumbled and invested in your Patreon to watch the full-length version of this, synced-up with the episode. I really enjoyed it, and I'm so pleased you liked it and were satisfied with how the multiple Claras all tied up. I can't wait for your reaction to the 50th. Obviously some of the value of the cliffhanger depends on how big a star you consider John Hurt to be, I suspect... In the UK probably much more so than the US, perhaps?
Paul Hayes I think it's a shame that audiences here in the U.S. generally only knew John Hurt from a few roles, such as Kane in Alien & Joseph Merrick in The Elephant Man. He had so many other great roles in film & TV that American audiences aren't familiar with. And what a great voice..."like honey & acid".
Gosh I can't believe you're here already! (That's what happens when you don't catch up on reactions 😅) I'm currently at 2:16 and yeah wow is most certainly the correct response to everything that happened in that scene ❤ Gosh it really doesn't feel like it's been four years but yeah it has to be. That year was so special to us Whovians ❤
As a huge River fan I live for your reactions whenever River is in the episode. Like honestly you make me excited to watch your reactions!!! SUBSCRIBED
I liked John Hurt being the War Doctor, even if it messed up with the amount of lives the Doctor has lived. It would've been interesting with Christopher Eccleston as the War Doctor, but then it wouldn't have had as much effect of keeping him a secret if we already knew him. The way I see it, is like this: War Doctor (John): War Veteran, tired and battle-weary. Wants things to end and having lost his sense of self, who he is. 9th Doctor (Chris): War Veteran, trying to find himself again, trying to be who he was. The Doctor. But still, there's that anger and tiredness of war still residing in him that hasn't faded. 10th Doctor (David): The one who regrets. Having come to terms with what he's done, he accepts what has happened and is coping with everything, trying to move on, but still has his dark moments. 11th Doctor (Matt): The one who forgets. He's let go of his past, focusing on the present, moving forward, and more concerned with what is to come, like his own death and the death of those he cares about who he has left. 12th Doctor (Peter): The old man, tired of living for others, but too kind to let go. The one whose past has come back around to haunt him again and again, and the long term effects on his psyche from everything.
The problem I had with Clara this season is that the whole "Impossible Girl" arc made her out to be this enigma rather than a true legit companion, which for me at-least got in the way of her character. For that reason, this finale really helped me with her in that the sole purpose of her appearing across all his faces is trying to save him. Quite touching :)
fancynancypigs no, I liked both Donna and Rose and Martha, but Clara was just incredibly annoying from the get go, and once the impossible girl was done, annoying was the only thing left. She overstayed her welcome and Moffat didn't have the faintest idea what to do with her. The Danny Pink story line was completely out of left field and was botched from the beginning.
I just love watching your reactions! I've watched Doctor Who all my life, so I really get swept up in it! I came across your channel just a couple of months ago and have watched all your Dr Who reactions! I know what's ahead for you so I'm just as excited as you are and am super excited for your reactions! I believe December is going to be a big month for you and Dr Who! So Geronimo you gorgeous girl!!
As one of those who was here when she started on the series, let me just say (though belatedly) welcome aboard, sir! That must have been quite a channel binge watching a Whovian forged in the vortex. :D
I love this episode. And I adored your reaction even more. Gaaaaah I can’t believe we’re here, what an amazing journey it’s been. Roll on Doctor Who December!!!! ❤️
I'm so glad you finally got to react to the Name of the Doctor! This will forever be one of my favorite episodes :) So excited for DW December and the 50th anniversary reaction! :)
Before I start, I'm goanna play a drinking game. Take a shot every time you look surprised. I'll be knocked out in twenty eight minutes and forty nine seconds.
That was such a shocking ending - for a start I was a big John Hurt fan, but I hadn't heard that he'd be in the 50th special, so I really wasn't expecting to see him at all. That and the screen caption really made this standout. As for working out who the figure that Clara didn't recongise might have been? I think I may have gone through the Valeyard and then the Dream Lord before I realised it must have been the one who pushed the button on the Time Lords.
2:07 Love that! Just wanna thank you for watching the show up to this point, I look forward to your next video every week as I would for a TV show. :D You bring a lot of emotion to these reactions, and you're easily my favorite youtuber reactor. :) Hope you enjoy the DW movie, and I highly recommend the 2 mini-sodes before Day of the Doctor, they explain a lot about what you just saw. :) Anyway, thank you again, and have a lovely weekend.
I've seen your reactions to The Walking Dead from time-to-time...had no idea you were a Whovian until today. You've just earned yourself a new subscriber
Been looking forward to this one for a while now! Been loving your Doctor Who reactions for a little while now and I'm beyond excited for you to see what's coming. In my opinion Doctor Who has gotten better and better with every season since the revival.
As soon as I saw the notification I cancelt everything I was about to do to watch that. I never enjoyed a reaction so much. Thank you!!! This is one of my favourite episodes so I´m glad you liked it. The greatest part was your reaction to John Hurt, so cool. Especially coz I knew about him before (unfortunatly I had spoilt myself on the Internet) it was fun to see someone else react to that.
Omg this is it! Can you believe how long we had to wait for the next episode? Anyway, the ending of this season (including the next two episodes, which I consider part of this season) is my favorite part of the show!
'Introducing John Hurt as the Doctor' I watched this episode when it was broadcast. Like I suspect every other viewer, I was 'what? WHAT?? WHATT??!!! John Hurt???? It's JOHN HURT! as the DOCTOR!!!' Tremendous surprise! Fantastic episode and I absolutely love your reactions to it. Always fun.☺
great reaction!! it has put me in the mood for a doctor who fest!! The night of the Doctor and The day of the Doctor.....getting the beers in with pizza.. looking forward to your reaction of these!!!
When the BBC sent advanced copies of this episode so that the reviewers could right their reviews for fast publication, they actually omitted this scene - so that it wouldn't be leaked out. So the reivewers only saw John Hurts appearance when the episode aired.
As someone who grew up with Who in the UK - my Doctor is Tom, which shows my age! - it's bloody wonderful to see someone relatively new having exactly the same reaction to the start of this episode as I did. Enjoy the next two "... of the Doctor" episodes. Moffat did a stunning job, and I'm pretty sure you'll love 'em.
