Hey friends. I started to notice a lot of similarities between reading Michael A Singer's books, and what Swami Sarvapriyananda was talking about in his Who Am I lectures, so let's investigate where Michael A Singer got his knowledge, and what he has to say about Yoga

Bhagwad Geeta is a book full of wisdom. It is said that the reader's understanding of the Geeta depends on the situation in his life at that time. Same person different situations different understanding of the same Bhagwad Geeta. Most Indians including me have not read The Bhagwad Geeta mostly because of their ignorance.

That’s really interesting. Sort of how I feel, like I have a feeling I will come to read the Geeta at the right time for my stage of life so don’t want to force the situation. Maybe I will stumble upon a copy and know that it is the right time. I suppose it’s the same as I have never read The Bible (not that I am a Christian anyway). But I do feel a time will come for me to read the sheets. My Dad has read it also.

@@spiritualreactions or rather, having read the Gita, what happens is that as you pass through situations the depth, nuances, and wisdom of what is stated in the Gita comes to the fore (like peeling each layer of the onion or of a statement in the Gita). There is no perfect moment to read the Gita; if you've read even small portions or a few verses of it, they'll serve as points of reflection as you go through life ... and like a light bulb, the wisdom of what you've read, even a single verse or thought in the Gita, could come alive in your mind as you go through life ... whether cutting vegetables and cooking dinner for family, or going to a restaurant (like he says), or talking with a friend or family, or watching TV, or just going for a walk, or watching a bird perched on a tree and going about it's daily life, or watching leaves changing color in autumn or falling thereafter. You know, the thoughts, initially just read and taken at face value, are like seeds planted that germinate, with regular watering of events of life and the thoughts that form thereof, over time into magnificent trees of wisdom that guide you ... full of branches of nuances, leaves of decisions to be made when reaching that leaf node (of a situation in your life), and flowers that are visited and pollinated by bees (your interactions with other sentient beings, human and otherwise, and lives where you provide seeds of thoughts and wisdom for their growth, and the cycle of a purposeful, wise, and impactful life lived by and with each other). Dharma states that do what you're expected to do in that moment, exactly what Krishna tells Arjuna in the Gita, is to detach himself from the moment (not let his relationships, emotions or preferences or desires dilute or muddy his thoughts) and do what is expected of him as a warrior and as a dharmic person given the situation. Hope all that made sense, and sorry for the long narrative and if it sounds convoluted 😊. You have a sunny day 🌻, and thank you for sharing this video and your thoughts with us. Will look forward to your video and thoughts whenever you start reading the Bhagavad Gita or commonly called the Gita.

Good that you touched this subject, that too directly from the Bhagavat Geeta.. The term Karma has very deep meaning.. Here it is not just mere action.. But here it is about the intention and center of mind and thoughts from where the actions are taking birth... It is not even about good action/work and bad action/work.. It is more deeper than that... There are 2 types of karmas... One coming from the center of ahamkaras/vrittis/samskaras... Which is called as sakaam karma... Sakaam means the karma good or bad but with some purpose to satisfy once ahamkara/vrittis/samsakaaras. These type of karma either good karma or bad karma is the reason for bondage and will never sets you free (even the good sakaam karma) The other coming from the center of atman (atman is one which is beyond body, mind, thoughts, emotions, intelligence, ego, vrittis and samsakaras. I have not used the word spirit or soul purposefully.. As there is no exact word to define atman.. As soul and atman are closely related but not same. In easy words you can see atman as beyond holy and unholy..or absolute holy.. Because atman is untouched, unimaginable and beyond all we know... Turiya is the state of atman) This 2nd type of karma is callled Nishkaam karma.. They are not to satisfy your mind or vrittis. This 2nd type of karma sets you free from all the bondages..

Regarding Shrimad Bhagwad Gita I doubt wether there are any reliable English translations (there are many translations in market, but as of now I didn't find any reliable one, as most of them just lack the meaning and are more of interpretations than translations), Hindi translations are more reliable and other Indian languages too, but anyway translations always loose some meaning, so I focuss directly on Sanskrit Shlokas (Though I also read Sanskrit in school curriculum as one of the subjects for three years only, just like all Indian School students do, but still being strong in linguistics, I grasped a lot better understanding of it compared to others, most Indians despite being taught Sanskrit in curriculum forget it afterwards and also in class play too little attention, even same is the attitude of teachers, there are no quality teachers, probably I have known much more Sanskrit than my teachers who taught me knew, so anyway, I won't say that I am good at Sanskrit, but I am fine enough to go directly foe shlokas in Gita and capable of extracting meaning and understand it, though with some help)! First time I read Gita when I just turned 13, it was more of literally reading Hindi translations, then once again at 17, and tried to grasp the meaning, now again recently I have started going directly after the Shlokas in Sanskrit and yep it makes much sense now! I would suggest you a little booklet from Taat Baba foundation called Three Doors of Meditation (though Dhyaana), you will have to order it from their site only, and I can't say how much they may charge for overseas delivery, but here via offline purchase it was just ₹30 you may convert to $ or £ via google! Another one I recommend is a lot popular booklet and a lot easier to get too, "Meditation and it's Methods by Swami Vivekananda", it's also cheap and similar in price! These are really much good for initials! Anyway, best wishes 🙏!

You're right, so much must be lost in translation, it's a shame. But for my very limited language capabilities (English only) I will have to do with that for now, and people like you to help me understand the true meaning. Thank you for the book suggestions, I would love to look at getting a copy of those. For now I have a translation of the upanishads so we will see how I get on with that!

Kriya in English it’s called work, for example if a person is cooking food. In that cooking is a work, whereas Karma yoga is different, we can say righteous duty which always stand with truth and fight against odds. For example, if a farmer needs food for his family he should start doing farming. So here farming is the righteous duty, instead if he sits home and dreams of food which is not Karma yoga. Finally, I would suggest you to watch Mahabharata for some more clarification.

Thanks for the video. This was the first time I saw it. His explanation of Karma Yoga is essentially the same as mentioned in the Bhagwat Geeta. A small extension to his explanation- Bhagwat Geeta states that a Karma Yogi does what one needs to, with an attitude of Service, of making things better for all, but the doer should not be too much concerned of the result of the actions, as the results are not in your control. Your acts create an action, which are also getting affected by external factors not under your control, so the result may or may not be as per your motivation to do the action. But your good actions will a create good karma, because of the positive intentions of the action. This good Karma will help in your spiritual evolution. (Actions with bad intentions generate bad Karma. They will also be in your Karmic account and will manifest their results accordingly.) So as common people, who are still exploring spirituality, just try and do the right thing, to the best of your ability. That's Karma Yoga. (This was my own conclusion- not in Bhagwat Geeta.)
@spiritualreactions
@spiritualreactions Год назад
Thank you so much. What a great explanation. I get what you are saying about not being too concerned with the results, because we could do something with very good actions but then down to something outside of our control they result may not manifest the way we intended, right? Glad you were able to see a video that you’ve not seen before too. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. 💜

Yog means union with higher self. (Very misunderstood term only associated with physical exercise in west) There are four yogic paths or ways to spiritually evolve depending on peoples inclinations. 1) Bhakti Yog: For devotional people includes worshipping god, chanting, dancing. 2) Raj Yog: Involves practices of mind meditation, pranayama mindfulness etc to reach higher self. Physical exercises, hath yog etc. Physical yoga is most popular in west. 3) Gyan Yog: Path of knowledge n wisdom to get enlightened. Study of vedas, upanishads on own or from masterd 4) Karma yog: Service or sewa. Any work or action done by surrendering action to god. Intellectual people like Gyan yog, devotional people bhakti yoga, action oriented people karma yoga and so on. They do at times end up slightly looking down on each other paths 😄 I follow art of living by his holiness sri sri ravishankar which combines all four paths. Mutually inclusive as we need to have knowledge/wisdom/gyan, have devotion/bhakti, be physically fit doing hatha yog etc, meditate (raj yog) to evolve.

Hi.. Kriya Yoga is the oldest of all Yogas. 'Paramhansa Yogananda', who wrote the book 'Autobiography of a Yogi' (as mentioned in the Video) was initiated in Kriya Yoga. Lahiri Mahasaya- An Indian Yogi was the first one from this school. He was initiated on this Kriya Yoga path by Mahavatar Baba (Who is also considered to be the Guru of Lord Krishna). You may find a lot of people in spiritual market propagating Kriya Yoga to be a technique for breath control, however, fundamentally, it is a yogic path that focusses on the understanding of the psychological processes going on within human beings. Thanks

The Yoga Sutras of Patañjali is a collection of Sanskrit sutras on the theory and practice of yoga - 195 sutras and 196 sutras. The Yoga Sutras was compiled in the early centuries CE, by the sage Patanjali in India who synthesized and organized knowledge about yoga from much older traditions.

I read the comment section, and many of factual details on Yoga are conveyed, which may seem quiet a bit different from each other and confusing as there are no straightaway connection links available and also many gaps! So, I would be focussing on organising it in a logical order and also fill in some missing points! "Yoga" (योग), literal meaning of this Sanskrit word is simply "summation", even your Mathematical calculation like 2+2=4, you can say that Yoga of 2 with 2 is equal to 4. So, that's the literal part of meaning. Now what about spiritual and philosophical meaning, well like simply you merge 2 with another 2 and it results 4, so that same merger meaning is here, merger of your current Illusive being to the Ultimate Truth (merger of wave and ocean), that process to reach that Ultimate Truth is called Yoga, that's the meaning in spiritual terms. So, among 6 Darshanas, there is one which is called Yoga Darshana, so there is also a philosophy per say, although Yoga is more oriented towards methodology, philosophical part, it borrows from Samkhya Darshan, another one from same 6 Darshanas. So, Yoga philosophy talks about methodology to attain merger with Ultimate truth! Great Sage Patanjali is said to have founded the Darshana of Yoga, and Patanjali's Yoga Sutra is the central scripture of Yoga Darshana, and it basically talks about the Yogic methodology consisting of eight steps or parts, thus said Ashtaanga, Ashta means Eight, Anga means parts or limbs! These are:- Yama (purification of attitude, being in harmony with surroundings, things like not harming other lives, kindness etc), Niyama (purification of daily routine for healthy lifestyle, mental, physical, spiritual), Aasana (correction of your physical posture, now those Yoga poses come to picture 😂, which West knows, they are just Aasanas, not complete Yoga), Praanaayaam (Correction on breathing process, those breathing exercises associated with Yoga in West are just Praanayam) (*people in West msotly only know Aasana and Praanaayaam in name of Yoga), then comes Pratyaahaar (turning inwards), Dhaarana (concentration), Dhyaana (de-concentration, simply let go, basically empty mind, mostly Dhyaana is translated as meditation in English which is wrong, because meditation actually means to concentrate, which is actually Dhaarana not Dhyaana), and then comes Samaadhi (pure Bliss, total harmony). So, basically Yoga is whole lifestyle package, with a well established Darshana (philosophy roughly) and spiritual motive behind it! Now, since the term Yoga actually means the process of reaching basically merger with Ultimate truth, so it becomes vast and not limited to this particular Darshana or lifestyle only, so basically term Yoga was encompassingly used by Gurus and followers of some other Darshanas as well to depict their ways as also a Yoga, as other Darshanas also gives a way to reach Ultimate Truth, so terms like Karma Yoga (in Samkhya Darshana and Mimamsa Darshana) for action oriented, Gyaan Yoga (in Adwait Vedant) for intellect oriented) and Bhakti Yoga (other Vedanta Darshanas leaving Adwait Vedant) for devotion oriented came to use. Other terms like Hatha Yoga, Kriya Yoga, Raja Yoga, come from various methodology oriented Yogic traditions, as they have many different methodologies! So, some people saying there are three types of Yoga, four types Yoga, that's very limited. There are actually infinite types Yoga possible, as there are Infinite ways to reach Ultimate Truth, as Rigveda says, एकम् सत् विप्रा बहुधा वदंति - Truth is one, sages say it in many different ways! So, there are many Yogas! Anyways, I hope everyone understands it 🙏!

I think I could compile a book of all the wisdom you explain in your comments. You are so correct in what you say about the West only knowing Yoga as being about breath and physical posture. It's such a shame people are missing out on the depths of knowledge we are missing out here. I love your explanation of Yoga as being a summation; as 2 and 2 merge to make 4, so we must merge our illusive being to Ultimate Truth 💜💜 Wow, so powerful. And the part where you say there are infinite Yogas as they are infinite ways to reach Ultimate Truth, what a great explanation! I hope you have been keeping well? Please share with me how you are

@@spiritualreactions karma means to do or action and technically it also includes the result of your action. e.g. when you do good the result is your feeling of pride etc. Similarly for bad actions you feel grief, anger etc. The result of your desires is karma. This they say leaves an impression in your soul like marks. The sum total of these good or bad impressions is your character. Your reaction to any situation now comes from these impressions in your soul. You cannot help it. That is your karma. To get rid of your karma you first work on tamas, then rajas and lastly satva. This gets rid of your ego. That is what is karma yoga. When now you do actions without it resulting in any grief, pride, anger etc is what is kriya yoga. This is what Lord Krishna explains Arjuna when he refuses to fight in the Gita. You do work as a duty and not by weighing the results a d doing the work. Kriya instead of karma.
