Trappy and TBS's NYC wing video got me started in FPV and I will forver owe him and TBS a debt of gratitude. But I have to say I was glad to stumble into you Stew when I finally built my first quad in 2017 or so. I was really glad to see an Aussie doing so well.

I was talking FPV ( not what I called it ) nearly 40+ years ago. I flew fixed wing and always wondered how one could set up a cam view "inside the cockpit" ( that is what I called it ) I read forums and many people spoke of the same desire ( even before I did ) but the right tech was not there . Fast forward I saw a few vids like Charpu who was flying through buildings and that "inside the cockpit view" was amazing But at that time several were doing it, and it was the FPV Tech ( much like SAFE in fixed wings a few years back) revolutionized the RC Aviation Hobby where just about anyone could buy and fly with little help from anyone ( just like DJI and other "camera Drones" that have also caused a ruckus in the Hobby. The SAD part of all that is many jumped on that band wagon and started showing their antics across video media and many of those vids were doing things very unsafe, and without respect nor care . We saw Rotor Riot and many others flying in places and in ways they should have never been. Then everyone wanted to do the same and sadly many and most have. From building dives to bridges to flying over and through auto's and among people and then we saw some flying over manned aircraft and at airports etc etc...and here we now are with Absolute Foolish regulations and rules that have came about because of most of these so called "influencer's" SO honestly many of these influencer's have corrupted the entire Rc Aviation Hobby, especially FPV. Now most of them fly commercially and all for the dollar. many are still making YT vids and many in the community follow them like dogs in heat and hang on their every word while they helped sell the hobby out for that mighty Dollar . We can not blame them all because many have done it FOR the Community and Hobby and not for the Dollar and even for themselves like therapy . Many have done it trying to educate the community and share their knowledge to help others and simply to have fun and the desire to help others experience the joy of flight . SO it is like a 70-30 stat. Sadly the 70% are the ones who have helped ruin the hobby for others and the other 30% is still there to help...ONLY you can decide which ones are in which %percentage% group. Now some may agree and some may not however just take a look at how much the Hobby has declined with all the "influencers" who now are money making commercial entities and who have silently just went along with the regulators and Industry folks and refuse to stand up against the tyranny and destruction of a hobby itself they once promoted !!!

I started flying in 2004 and fpv drones in 2006 ;-) I also gave CASA manufacturing training, after watching the flow state documentary, I feel like I should shine some light on when and where drones originated ...

I know a guy who in the late 90s was flying fixed wing FPV. He hacked together some cctv equipment and rudimentary transmitter/receiver tech. He says the quality was pretty bad, but definitely usable.

I tried dipping my toes into fpv back in 2017 but ended up never taking off due to personal events out of my control. I recently decided to get back into it now that everything is slowing down. It’s nice to watch this and get caught up with what I missed lol

You forgot silverware by notfastenuff on tiny whoops which was to turn into Alienware,flew really good and didnt need betaflight.Acro was spot on and you could configure the flightboard using a fidi soldered onto it,this was mainly for brushed motor's but worked really good.ive got several builds i still fly and still surprised by how good it still is for the time.

I don't agree with you that kiss was all about "your favorite pilot" bottom line. Kiss flew amazing with almost no tuning to where betaflight came from clean flight and clean flight came from base flight and the code was horrendous and a mess to sort through just to make the simplest changes to the pid controller (hence why they still have issues shaking airmode explosions) was alot of work versus clean tech with fresh fw...js. much love

Where I would like to see BetaFlight go from here is adding more features like what iNav has for better return to home and position hold. The move to splitting the code so things that are not needed or wanted can be removed and the cloud build system is a move in the right direction. This could be the thing that makes H7s worth spending more money on.

Great documentary on the role of influence and BetaFight as part of flight controller software development heritage. INAV and Aurdopilot seem to have been ignored, but they are less focused on drone racing specifically. Maybe they're examples of software without big influence. ;) Suggestion: a videos in this style focused on FPV goggles and transmitters. Lots of good FPV history, and stories that should be preserved.

If you don't need RTH Quicksilver firmware is amazing on a 5 inch drone. Just didn't raise the boost too high you'll smoke motors.

@Uavfutures why not mention the scam that was Flight1 with the H7 Lightening pre orders? If he happens to come. Ack some how a 3rd time is it not fair information for the community to be aware of? Loved these videos! From what I got from the video is that Betaflight and ELRS are the projects carrying the FPV spirit while there were countles companies trying to make the hobby some corporate wasteland

Op + Flyer id, and vlos requirements for 250g+ is the most ruinous part of fpv if you ask me, particularly in the uk, remote id is bullshit too, but we don't have that yet, but we dont need spotters, we should be allowed to legal fly alone in safe remote locations, its ridiculous that we are breaking the law in doing. I also think that digital fpv systems need to come down in price, they need to be cheap enough to build, fly, crash repeat, for the masses, not just the wealthy, most of my whole builds cost less than a digital system, one digital costs the same as analogue does now, there will be a resurgence.

GPL spreading like a virus needs significant code, not a snippet like one small function. However perhaps you misrepresented the nature of that function? Or perhaps the freight train community overpowered the owners of the code. Hard to say.

People started k7ll7ng with FPV in Russia, the pandemic ended and YT audiences left and went back to work, and playing with AI superceeded it as way more interesting. Unless you're hitting tanks in Ukraine, FPV has gone the way of the hoola hoop. Plus, people copy your work and don't give you credit. Cough cough EdgeTX

The only thing corrupt about fpv if anything, is youtube. One could argue that pilots will endorse crap for money, but as an adult its up to me to decide whats hype and whats not. I enjoy fpv youtube but all i really care about is flying. If guys want to be influinced by money thats their issue. I just want to rip packs.
