Heralded as one of the most gifted comedians to grace Studio 8H, Norm Macdonald had a moderately successful television career post SNL, appearing in a variety of guest roles, voiceovers, commercials, and short-lived sitcoms. But how did his television career fare against his contemporaries?

Ah, Arti Lanj, the famous comedian, not to be confused with Artie Lange.

“Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are the most notable actors to achieve mainstream success on the silver screen post SNL” dude did ChatGPT write this for you? Will Farrell? Bill Murray? EDDIE MURPHY!? I love Norm and thanks for making a Norm video. But the thesis of the video is totally utterly wrong.

I am talking about their television careers, not their cinematic ones.

@@historyofnetworktv “silver screen” refers to specifically movies, not tv. You could have used “small screen” for a metonym for tv.

For women from SNL, Julia Louis Dreyfus has arguably had more success on TV than Tina Fey and Amy Poehler had. For men, I'd put David Spade, Phil Hartman, Conan O'Brien, Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, and Jim Belushi ahead of Norm MacDonald, and I love Norm.

Bill hader and John Mulaney did pretty good for themselves the last I checked. Seth Meyers, Conan O Brien (he was a writer but still an snl alum) and Jimmy Fallon got their own late night shows. Al Franken literally got elected to the senate after SNL. Plus if we go on about guys like Eddie Murphy there's no end to this. Norm got cancelled by mainstream media and had a pretty bad post-snl career besides Dirty Work and his Netflix stuff. I love his VPN podcast from a decade ago but he was doing it for free so idk if that counts.

While Norm did not have the best cinematic career, his television career lasted a lot longer than his contemporaries, except for maybe Chris Rock. That’s all I was saying. Seth Meyers has done well. John Mulaney has appeared here and there on cable. Jimmy Fallon left SNL to make three flop comedies in Hollywood and was an alcoholic before Lorne recommended him for the late night job.

I love Norm but not even close. Beluchi, Ackroyd, Chase, Murray, Sandler, Spade, Myers, Carvey, Ferrell and Fallon come to mind.
