Respiratory viruses like influenza, RSV and seasonal colds spread like wildfire even as COVID fell off. Why? Alok and Sheena explain the leading theory, and explore the ways that the pandemic impacted our immune systems, especially for young children. The FDA has now approved the first vaccine against RSV, but will the “Tripledemic” be back?

I'm so glad you guys talked about this. Also that you mentioned how these normal respiratory viruses can be more harmful to young infants and people with underlying conditions. Allot of people don't understand this and wonder why I don't bring my baby out so he can "build his immune system". He's a 3 month old with a serious heart condition (a single ventricle). He gets synagis monthly and has had other recommended vaccines but his cardiologist still says it's not safe to bring him out except for medical necessity. We're currently isolating ourselves from the rest of our family as they have fevers and he already had to spend 4 days in the hospital on oxygen after being exposed to a cold by either school age siblings or dad who has to work with the general public (I think it was dad, we all got a cold 3 days after his parental leave ended). I actually only discovered this youtube chanel because I couldn't sleep well the nights we were in hospital and stumbled upon a different video you guys did. So grateful that there are wonderful health care professionals like yourselves taking time out of their already busy lives to educate the general public.

My 5 yr old spent 5 days in the hospital (Oct 1-5) because she had a “common cold” but she needed oxygen to keep her O2 at 86. In Feb she spent 5 days in the hospital with Covid and Humanmetapneumoniavirus and needed to be on 3 liters of oxygen for the first 3 days.

These videos are so good! I was just one day feeling a bit weird in my throat, then I went for a quick run before going for a business dinner. The next day I had fever etc. Then it got better but now two weeks later I've had sore throat in the morning after sleeping. I guess now I just need to relax for a few days...

Do you think there actually might be an advantage to kids getting their first RSV later in their life? Like will there be less deaths in the 2-4 age range from RSV than the typical 0-2 age range? I found the antibody theory interesting. I was pregnant during COVID lockdowns and my daughter didn't really go out much in the world until she was about 7 months old. Makes me glad she didn't get exposed much until then if there's a good chance she had fewer antibodies. She's already been to the hospital once for a bad influenza virus in severe respiratory distress and seems to be constantly sick lately. But I'm glad for a great free medical system here that means I don't need to hestitate to take her to the ER when I can see she is struggling to breathe.

We had the same question: could it be a blessing in disguise to get the infection at an older age? Since typically, it is most dangerous for the youngest? The experts we talked with said that's a reasonable thought but we really don't know how it will shake out. Hope your daughter is feeling well now!

My daughter was a 31-weeker and low birth weight, and she received Synagis as an infant (2011-12). I've known enough healthy, chunky babies who've ended up in the hospital to be so, so thankful for those shots! (All of them. Ever seen a five-pound two-month-old get three vaccines at once? 🙋 LOL)

I'll tell you why everyones getting sick. People who got the covid vaccine aka moderna jab aren't showing as positive when they are tested. My husband and I, both retired, got sick at the same time with the same exact symptoms. Fever, cough, sore throat. I was unvaccinated and tested positive for covid. He was vaccinated and tested twice as negative. I have heard this also from a few people. Why haven't doctors figured this out yet. Wait until Thanksgiving when the cases will soar again. Check back and let me know if I was wrong.

Even if this was true, which the science really doesn't support but may still be as they are constantly doing new research and may just not have discoveredthis yet, that has nothing to do with the issues they were mentioning such as; RSV, influenza, parainfluenza, enterovirus, ect. This video was about why there are so many cases of serious illness from other viruses, not covid.

Covid positive, covid negative. You both got sick with the same normal symptoms, so what was the advantage given by the jab?

100% false. Vaccinations don't make people more likely to get sick. In the case of the viruses they were talking about, those who got the sickest are babys too young for vaccines and folks with underlying conditions (some of whom are too weak to be vaccinated). I respect everyone's decision to make choices for themselves and their family including whether to vaccinate/ which vaccines to get, but the science (and history) proves that vaccines save lives. It's why people don't get polio, it's why few people die of chicken pox or measles in the US. Most people are probably strong enough not to get THAT sick and to build an immune response after exposure but some are not. As the mother of a 3 month old with a rare heart condition, my son can literally die from a common cold, PLEASE vaccinated or not, stay home if you're sick to prevent transmission of viruses to those who's immune system isn't as string as yours.
