The reason we didn't get back to the SB is because we abandoned the trenches to pay Russell.

I disagree completely, Russ rode out his pitiful 3rd round rookie contract to the end, no hold-out no nothing, then signed a fairly team-friendly contract in 2015 for a franchise QB at 4yrs/80mil total. We had some bad drafts and bad trades like getting rid of our good center in Unger for Jimmy Graham who we did nothing with. The defense aged out, and after Beastmode our RB’s couldn’t stay healthy, so yeah the offense became Russ-centric and four years later he took a huge payday. But to say we abandoned the trenches is ignorant, Okung, Ifedi, Carpenter, Collier, McDowell, bro we sank so many high picks into the trenches it’s stupid, but nearly all of them missed

No lol, we did draft a lot of oline if you actually look at how many picks went towards the oline. The issue was they either reached or waited until later rounds to get those players or just drafted badly in general. Russ being paid had nothing to do with it.

The big thing is not reaching in the first two days. I kind of look at the TE pick as a wash, since that position is so hard to evaluate in college. I personally value the blocking more than receiving for the position since I think it’s harder to coach competent blocking than catching. That said, no big reaches in rounds that matter and generally good value or on the nose.

After watching some film breakdowns on other channels i gotta say that Murphy has the potential to be a top 3 defensive tackle in the league. His pass rush is very good and his run blocking is underatted. Its actually scary to think that hes only going to get stronger and will be able to learn from Lenoard williams and Jarran Reed. He consistently beats double teams and has great instincts. The perfect fit in mcdonals defense

Superb video BN. Thank you. Love ur logical presentation. Grade A on R1 R3 R5 R6. 5 out of 8 picks are great value. Happy to let JS & Mac take a swing on 3 x day 3 boys they love in the hope of hitting a home run. R1 R2 R3 matters much more than day 3. Cuz days 1 & 2 went brilliantly JS & Mac took gambles in R4 for thier faves. As per Mike Sando's deep dive research, a great draft is one where u get 1 pro-bowler (e.g R2 DKM) 2 solid starter (e.g R3 T.Lockett) 3 an OK back-up (e.g day 3 Stone Forsythe) An amazing occurs once in a decade for good teams & is where u find a HoF (Hall of Famer). Eg Sherman. Even if all the other picks fail but u get one HoF, its an amazing draft. Look at Hawks history, how many HoFs have we had in nearly half a century? Well Done Mr Nelson.

The question we needed to ask: in the context of the Seahawk's roster, was Murphy the best player at the position of most need? Last season, it seemed to me that from the snap, the ball and the rush often got to Geno at the same time, so no, our O-line is totally fly-blown. (Ranked 30th in the League) We needed all our picks to be in the trenches, both sides of the ball...No Pete Carroll and John calling the shots seems good to me.

They probably took Barner because they got sniped on Ja'Tavion Sanders who got picked by CAR 1 pick ahead of us. So he must've been their next TE and they didnt want to miss out on him either. DJ James in the 6th is a steal. Chris Simms had him as a Tier 2 Corner, one of the must fluid guys in the class, just undersized
@428lonewolf
@428lonewolf 17 дней назад
You can't just pick by the big board value. You also need to consider the individual team need. For instance, TE AJ Barner. Yes, there were higher ranked TEs, but not in the blocking, which is what we we're looking for. So you need to make your pics based on your need not what the big board says.

this is the dumbest thing ive ever seen. the aggregate is a horrible way to determine value. it is very rarely correct when you look at it in hindsight and also very different from most team's big boards. i trust the big boards of the actual teams a lot more because they have pro scouts and resources we dont have. also, most of the "steals" in the draft actually dont become steals if you look at the draft a couple of years later

I think you need to ask the question differently, the quest is could we have got "better" value? The problem I have is day 3 and not the positions we took, but I thought there was better value on the board and better players we could have taken. Obviously that is subjective, but the whole thing is subjective even the "consensus". Maybe they thought the player they took were the ones that had the highest value, fine, I don't agree. We will have to see a few years down the road how it all plays out.

There's some subtlety that goes into it that you're not considering. Suppose you draft a player in the 4th that you likely could have gotten in the 5th or 6th. How much talent did you just pass up to ensure you're getting a player that the probabilities suggest you would have gotten anyway if you'd just waited? You have to draft with your brain, not just with your player assessments.

Your point about Murphy's value is totally fair and accurate. I think some of it is... did we get good value for us and our needs? Unless we bench or cut Dre'Mont Jones, Murphy isn't even going to start for us. He's going to come off the bench, and it's unlikely that he'll play more than 50% of the snaps as the 2nd defensive player picked in the whole draft. We knew that Witherspoon was going to start one way or another and play 90% of the snaps. Are we getting good value if our only pick in the first two rounds plays (let's say) 30% of the snaps next season? Murphy would have been great value for Atlanta at 8 even though he was ranked 13th. So the value question needs to be expanded beyond just where a player is ranked.

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion but talking about “value” on day 3 picks is so lame. Obviously teams had different rankings than the board you show. Start talking about the players and not the pick number. Swap Knight with Laumea or James and suddenly you have good value in your picks based off certain rankings. I get u have to get views but come on man
@pltatman1
@pltatman1 17 дней назад
I'll say this for the value proposition on day 3. Did you draft a player in the 4th round that you likely could have gotten in the 5th or 6th? If so, you're passing up a lot of talent simply to ensure that you get the player you want. That's a risky way to go about your business. But there is also the insider stuff we don't know, like intel on other team's draft strategies and how that factors into the selections.

@@pltatman1 doesn’t the second part of ur comment go against the first part? How we we know that we could have gotten players two or three rounds later? Because some random sports account said so, or 1 of the multiple different draft websites? Clearly the Seahawks have players like Knight high on their draft boards. So to them it can be good value. Anyways we won’t know if it was a good value pick until a year or two or three down the line
@pltatman1
@pltatman1 17 дней назад
@@anthonymauc3262 I would say it balances the first part. There's always a lot of factors for a GM to consider--some conflicting--and they are on the clock. As far as the difference between how teams scout vs how fans and analysts scout, it is true that casuals don't have access to professional scouting evaluations. But what we do have is film study, and a lot of it. So the quality of player evaluations heavily depends on the value of the source, and their diligence.

@pltatman1 17 дней назад

It’s an interesting thought experiment and I appreciate your efforts to look at it as objectively as possible HOWEVER, the problem when any ranking system is that the reality of success or failure has so many variables that you simply cannot account for. While it’s a fun discussion to have as fans I can’t take anyone including myself to seriously! Anytime anyone gets so sure they’ve cracked the code I simply remind my friends and fellow fans of two memorable Hawks….Rick Mirer and Doug Baldwin. Those two examples alone prove how wrong even the best concensus by the most qualified evaluator’s can be! At the end of the day the only real measure of “value” will come AfTER these young men play the game from here on out.
