Hey that van looks familiar 😊 thank you so much for checking it over for us and fixing the wheel bearing. We will be doing a lanolin based undercoat before winter, so it should still be rust free next time you see it!

Awesome van! I like that it's FWD and not AWD. I don't care about the dash, that thing looks so good underneath. Great to hear that you will undercoat. Not sure what you paid but there is so much value there. This makes me want to do a Florida trip for my next toyota/lexus.

Good plan on undercoat rustproofing. I tried just using spray cans of it on mine but it's hard to get a thick coating. Use the woolwax gun if you're going to DIY it.

Not because I have the skills to repair my vehicle myself but it equips me with enough knowledge to understand the issue and keep the shop or mechanic honest. My mom had the ~00 Sienna. I don't know the final mileage, but it was maybe 2018 when she finally gave it to a relative. Of course it was only after she gave it away it somehow needed a little maintenance. Which my parents possibly helped them on. EDIT: Oh and she of course purchased an '18 Sienna to replace it.. although I think nowadays she barely drives it.

@@davidglad As a Toyota master technician and gear head, I kinda believe cars have feelings. I’ve owned plenty of cars that never give me a moment of trouble but the moment it hears I want to get rid of it, the car throws a bit. All the sudden battery is bad for instance. Cars are just funny
@davidglad
@davidglad Год назад
@@Trex6767 Whether it's feelings or just adapted to the person who was the owner and out of sync with somebody new, probably truth to that. Perhaps that's the real reason my 06 Camry the other morning could cross 186000 miles only to have the alternator essentially fail. _Yet it still allowed me to drive_ the remaining 12 miles to my office after seeing the battery light , which I wouldn't have chanced on a non-workday or after work. (Since any red dashboard light I'd say translates to pull over as soon as it is safe to do so, I'd obviously not recommend anyone do this.) There was a hint for some weeks prior, but a friend thought the sound was more minor than having to do with the alternator or operation of the vehicle. PS Crazy longer note is when I saw that battery light, I quickly shut my headlights off (it was daylight), turned radio off, and removed a bt accessory using aux power. So my dashboard went dark a split second *twice* maybe a minute or two later but came back on as quickly. It was then I decided to pull off the highway to the nearest gas station. Sitting at a stoplight before pulling in, I realized that dashboard light was no longer on and chose to chance the final maybe 3 miles and arrived safely. I intended on selling the Camry if I found a deal on a new car, but this experience screams at me to *KEEP* it and likely use it as my workhorse even with a new car. As it only took a 173.19 receipt at O'Reilly (their tests confirmed it was the alternator, but indicated I'd probably need to replace my battery a year from now) to replace the alternator and some _loaner tools_ from AutoZone I already was refunded on by returning same day.. and of course a yt video showing how to replace the alternator with a friend coming out.

This a perfect example of why I used to think that the best place to get a car serviced was at the dealer where I bought it. That's where I felt that I'd find guys like CCN: guys who just work on that brand of car and know everything about them. I found that to be, unfortunately, not the case and let's not even talk about the dishonesty. So now I go to an independent. He works on all kinds of cars but he seems to know what he's doing and he's a straight shooter, too.

We had a local mobile day repair in our area. He went by the name of Dr. Vinyl. He did a great job on many vehicles where people didn’t it use a dash at and or a strong windshield cover (Southern AZ) the UVA/UVB rays bake things out here in this part of the country. We employ tinted windows with ceramic based or metal based materials to help reduce those rays and the heat. We don’t have rust issues out here. We deal with engine cooling issues and A/C issues in the Summer. Many owners fail to service their vehicles in the Spring. Our shop gets bombarded with this type of work throughout the Summer 😅😅

A tire pressure monitor failure on a 15 year old car is certainly not unexpected. The bearing either, when one considers the state of most highways. Have seen this a lot in California lately, was shopping for a used IS350 and every month if see one for a great price w/low miles. Digging into car history every one of them had an out of state history which coincidentally included being sold into another state just a few months after a major hurricane/flood in the city it had been registered too. Sad thing is, I saw these cars sell quickly, like less than 2 weeks n the lot

@@kevinconroy6606It probably happens a bit less in CA than other states due to many having CA-specific models with additional emissions equipment so the 49-state version can’t be registered there. Plenty of 50-state vehicles that can though.

I bought an 06 Sienna with 130,000 and did the same thing. It’s the highest end model they made that year and even has adaptive cruise. No inspection. It had brand new BFG tires. I knew it needed a new timing belt and valve cover gasket. It’s a great vehicle. I did notice it needed a new inner tie rod boot and replaced that myself. The owner had not replaced spark plugs ever, so while my mechanic was doing the valve cover I told him to put in 6 new plugs and 3 new ignition coils on the back. When I got it home, I put in 3 new ignition coils on the front myself to save me some money. Wow! This thing drives great.

In a 2002 Highlander I had a passenger side front wheel bearing starting to make noise, but I could not get a number of mechanics to verify it. They would spin the tire and wiggle it from side to side with no effect; “must be a transmission bearing”. The advice to feel the rumble by gripping the spring is one I’ll remember.

Power sliding door gave up around 10 yrs, but outside of that needed 1 wheel bearing and new struts. Near the end the original rad was holding good after some rad stop leak took care of a slow nagging leak and the exhaust was starting to leak badly and was due for new brakes but otherwise this vehicle was my convincer to stay with Toyota - a Camry, RX, and NX followed. It was a solid vehicle even though it was kind of abused the last 3 years I had it.

Mechanics locally also say this, just we do not know when it applies: "You are already there " , meaning, is better to take the opportunity and replace something related so is easier on the costs of labor: is normal not only to have to add refrigerant to the a/c system, but also to replace the whole amount, in this case R 134 of a 2005 Corolla with 274,500 plus, I still remember the excellent Toyota Master Tech at a local dealer, who replaced the A/C Clutch Assy at over 133,964, but I believe it failed well before that when I started hearing an annoying clicking sound from the a/c at 115,000 miles, reading the dealer invoice I have the name of the Master tech., but this was on June 25 2016, more than 7 years ago, it says a/c flush was done, since then the serpentine was replaced again twice, its tensioner was replaced again, but now the a/c seems to need service not blowing so cold. Not properly diagnosed yet, just a question, if is better to replace the a/c clutch again ( because it has more than double the mileage of the original replaced at a dealer) or, is better to say, if ain't broke don't fix it ? (I bought the clutch, fearing Toyota might listen to main dealers and start to limit parts well before the 20 years. Dealers are pushing Toyota for 10 years parts availability only, as a friendly parts salesman told me. But that is bad for Toyota owners who like to keep cars 20 years or more...Thanks for the video.

My family had a 2006 Sienna LE that we got up to 300k miles. It would never give up, no matter what we put it through. The cracking dashboard problem did start to rear its head eventually, but that was fixed with a recall. And there was also a defect with the rear axles that caused an on-off-on-off kind of feeling from the brake drums while slowing to a stop, even with totally new brakes.

Please tell me about the rear axle problem that causes the "on and off" feeling. I too have not been able to solve this issue with my 06. Drums in the rear on my van

@@abyssalsoul6216 There may be a slight warping to one of the components of the rear wheel assembly that worsens over time. This causes the brake drum to angle slightly in relation to the tire, creating an uneven braking pressure as the wheel rotates with the brakes activated. It feels like the strength of the brakes increases and decreases in a sinusoidal manner, varying in frequency depending upon the rotational speed of the wheels. The brakes also make an annoying rubbing sound that starts and stops at the same rate as the brakes tightening and loosening against the tire. I wish I knew exactly what component was at play. But I'm not very well versed in automotive technology. I just recently became interested in The Car Care Nut, so I'm learning now. And I traded in the Sienna many years ago to get a RAV4. So I may never find the answer to this mystery. It had a few mechanics baffled because they couldn't find a way to improve the braking performance.

@@CaveyMoth Thank you for responding. Years ago I renewed the drums with aftermarket ones and what a mistake that was! In hindsight the originals still had some life left in them but I wanted to go thousands of miles more without having to address the drums again. To make matters worse I threw away the originlas before I had time to road test the new ones. Long story short the aftermarket ones produced vibrations that were just intolerable. I even tried different brands , finally keeping the ones that produced the least vibration. It wasn't until I spoke with the technician at an auto machine shop who said that the new ones were out of round and was he right! He resurfaced them and made them true and no more vibration after that. So for a while now I have been experiencing what I believe to be brake judder and seems to be coming from the front. If I step on the brakes at high speed I get the judder feeling which varies with speed. I do not see the steering wheel moving left to right to suggest that the rotor is warped. I may be wrong though. Recently I deglazed the front front rotors to see if the judder would improve but it did not.

Hey I have the exact van. Mine has everything original except the starter and alternator. But mine just passed the the 600,000 km Mark. The body is rough but the engine and transmission runs like a Rolex watch. You do proper maintenance you have yourself an amazing van. I decided to trade it up to a Toyota Tundra after watching your channel. Hopefully my truck will serve me well as did my minivan, I will miss it for sure

You mentioned this v6 doesn’t have the oil cooler line unless it had tow package, i saw a trailer hitch, or is that not factory? Great video, appreciate them always!

Miss our 05 Sienna which we had to put to rest early this year. 242k+ miles, 18 years… loved that van so much. It had a flashing check engine light (cylinder 1 misfire) and the fix was more than the van is worth. One sliding door quit working a long time ago, cracked dash was fixed for free by a Toyota, right axle broke while on a road trip, tons of brake replacements, starter was also replaced, AC fan died, had overheating problems and chased a coolant leak to no avail. If I could have put $2000 into it to make it run to 300,000 I would have done it. Only thing I didn’t like was the gas mileage (19 mpg)!

My mechanic tells me not to replace the oil cooler lime on my 2011 Sienna. If it ruptures will the check engine light come on in time for me to shut down and avoid damage? LOVE your show. This is my first Toyota.

Mechanic is giving you bad advice. Replace the oil cooler lines, an the VVTI oil feed lines ASAP! Especially if the lines are rubber. If they are metal lines, you are good! Lost of oil pressure. Will cause the 2GRFE (engine in the sienna) to self destruct, rather quickly. If the lines ruptures. You won't have any time to do anything about it! If that happens, it's BIG bill time.
