Unfortunately I think you will be changing a lot of tiles over the years as it’s the mortar the gives tile it’s strength against chipping and cracking. Think of it like this, would you like to cross a glass bridge with just the 4 corners supported or with the entire glass supported ?
@CallardAndBowser
@CallardAndBowser 6 месяцев назад
I would think that all those air pockets under the tile could be points for uneven cracking / breaking if something heavy puts pressure on it. I'm not an expert but I think you were supposed to put an even coating of mastiff under the tiles. I wonder if you should pull up all the tiles and liquid nails and redo the tilework correctly?
@CajunCountryLivin
@CajunCountryLivin 6 месяцев назад
We will keep y’all updated! We are curious too, but willing to take the risk! The good thing about liquid nails is that it has a rubbery finish when it sets up. This allows for a little bit of give. We will let y’all know though!
@scottbell7818
@scottbell7818 6 месяцев назад
At a minimum you want to go buy more of that tile as breakage and cracks are going to be a constant problem ... you won't be able to get more down the road, possibly, and you will need plenty for repairs. But if you want it done right, bite the bullet and pull it all up and do properly with thinset and a 1/4" notched trowel.
@becomer1
@becomer1 6 месяцев назад
I have to agree here, the likely reason behind the crack, has to do with the use of the liquid nails over mastic. If you don't provide an even consistent base below tile, it will break surprisingly easy due to air voids. Tile is fragile

As a life long DIYer, all I can say is that yes, yes I have messed things up. And then had to fix it. And it included removing tile or travertine when I messed up. Always get the grout out. It will keep the neighboring tiles from cracking. But I have NEVER laid tile on construction adhesive, always on mortar. Seriously, it is less expensive, and easier to fix when something gets messed up!
@CajunCountryLivin
@CajunCountryLivin 6 месяцев назад
Hi Ken! Good to know! I probably just got lucky it didn’t damage the other tiles. The grout has only been in few a few weeks & I haven’t had time to seal it yet either. I’m glad I didn’t!

I was thinking the tile should not have cracked if the mortar was done properly. Adhesive is a no no.

Now that you used liquid nail. You can see after taken out some of the tile.. you have voids. The tile adhesive needs to be spread out evenly with a notch trowel. Once you press the tile in, you have no void under the tile. Just stepping on the tile after a few years, or house movement. Your tile could crack because of the void. You worked so hard and looked awesome.

After some stress failure testing of Liquid Nails on wood I built a set of ramps out of yellow pine and 3/4 exterior plywood using it for my 240Z. Drive the front up two, jack the rear for the other two one at a time. Ease backing off all four. Once it sat on them for 3 months till I could get at that little manual transmission bearing that kept breaking using it as a truck. Have trucks now but those ramps are still in the garage for maybe something someday. Liquid Nails score one. Love the can do energy you two exude. Blessings.

I had a huge problem with tile and LN. The way a tile guy explained it is, no matter how anyone tries, the cement is never absolutely flat. Mastiff evens the cement floor out giving the tile a solid foundation to adhere to. Thus taking a lot of the possibility for cracking out of the equation. Although i tried to repair it, i had to eventually pull it all up 😥. Good luck to you, I do love your show and look forward to all of your adventures!❤

I put tile in our kitchen and bath using thin set. I had one crack. I used the oscillating saw to remove the grout, then used the hammer to break the tile and removed it with the saw. Thin set is a much better option, in my opinion. Good decision to continue the tile to the wall.

Lydia Sometimes when we play we have to pay. Thankfully this time you were not only able to fix the effects of the accident. ( Calling it that instead of a mistake 😊) It gave you a second chance to revisit the layout which you probably wouldn't have done if it hadn't happened. Over all things turned out better. I just hoped you learned a lesson from this young lady.😊 I think after having to remove that tile you probably did.😊 Having the trim on the window and the blind changed the feel the room . Excited to see how the vanity and any other accessories turn out. Hope the weather is being kind to you. Here in northeast Missouri we are getting it all Rain , snow, sleet, high winds freezing temps (a few nighttime lows minus 2 degrees) Until next time

My first thought when I saw you drop the pipe was NOT THE GATOR!! I was very relieved that the gator came out unscathed. I will be removing some linoleum tile in the future. And I was talking to my daughter about your unique way of using Liquid Nails to glue down your tiles. I told my daughter I was curious as to what would happen in the future when you needed to remove those tiles. Well now I have the answer! This was yet another great video and I'm glad that you share with us your thought process when you do things.

Kudos for finishing the floor. Totally agree on providing options later. Sooo funny. I was typing a warning about the tile being hollow, THEN I got to that part of the video. I'll post it anyway for fun. "It was interesting to see the liquid nails under the tile. It did not spread much. Makes me worry about tiles cracking where there is no under support if something heavy falls or rolls over them (agin). I could also be WAY wrong. Wouldn't be the first time today :) .. Winner buys the first cup of coffee." Speaking of coffee, stay warm next week!!

Tile is normally set by spreading an even layer of mastic and then placing the tiles on that and pressing them into place. This transfers the weight on the tile through to the concrete or other floor evenly. The mastic is spread with a saw-toothed trowel hootis so the high points will mash down evenly but fill any irregularities on the bottom of the tile. That way, when someone wearing spike heels will not crack the tile. I don't know how that will be affected by your spacer system as they present tiny pressure points on the tile edges.

It's the thinner and larger size of the tile is where it gets more problematic. And it's long term wear is when the cracking is. But by then you may be wanting to change it.
@karenmcguire7292
@karenmcguire7292 6 месяцев назад
The liquid nails may have been why it cracked, just a thought. We are chronic DIYer's and in light of that I would say, I'm always happier to fix my own mistakes over having paid someone to have done something right and yet, they don't or something is questionable, or outright done wrong. I also used orange underlayment in one of our bathroom tile floors - it was recommended by one of the DIY shows, to prevent movement (such as cracks in foundation or if putting tile on a wood subfloor, to prevent tile cracking)... but I don't know that I applied the mortar liberally enough. One test I have heard is, when it is down/dry to knock or tap on the tile and if it sounds hollow there is not enough mortar adhesion and/or coverage underneath. If you knock & sounds solid, then it is strong. Your tile was beautiful & on the surface you had done a gorgeous job. Although pulling it up looks a bit torturous. I used a hammer drill to remove the last round of old tile. Just thinking too, liquid nails probably would have been okay to put tile on the walls, the wall would not have to withstand weight. We also have yet to put in permanently a vanity & after your video, I question permanently putting in anything that sits over the tile, due to the potential difficulty to access any, if the time needed to be redone. Thankyou! I something I will be reconsidering and I look forward to your final result.

Liquid nail is very strong to hold things down, but when it has to do with tiles, there are air pockets between the concrete floor and the tiles when you use liquid nail, leaving the foundation underneath the tile weak because it is not secured to the concrete. In the future, you will always damage the tile and most likely at the places that there are air pockets under the tile that does not support the tile properly. You should use mud only to secure all areas on the underneath side of the tile and the floor to have no air pockets. If you talk to a tile layer they will let you know even mud you have to make sure you have no air pockets. It needs to be solid and spread out evenly underneath the tile. The concrete floor is hard the tile is hard the liquid nail is spongy and the air between the concrete and tile will cause guaranteed future tile damages. But you guys are awesome and we love watching.

In 2009 i renovated my kitchen. I put on a backsplash of small rectangular glass tiles. Since the wall was quite uneven from removing the old tiles, i had to fix that first. So i started to tile the even parts while the evened out part dried, about 2/3 of the whole backsplash. I put the grout in using a metal spatula. Yes, i did😑. After it dried, i noticed i had scratched the whole surface of the glass tiles. I had to rip everything out. The wall was a bit, erm, uneven after that. However, i think your tiles broke quite easily. Maybe thats because of the small contact surface with the floor because of the small amount of adhesive you used. I guess you will have that problem again. Have tiles in reserve.

Liquid nails is not for setting tile you should have used thin set that you mix in a bucket. It will always crack very easy not enough support coming from a retired tile layer.

Since it was a pipe air resistance would be negligible from a height of 5 feet. Gravity pulled it down @ 32.17 ft/s and it would take about 1/2 a second to hit the ground. It would've hit at a speed of roughly 12.23 MPH with a peak impact force of 266 N or about twice its weight, so 60 pounds. 60 pounds concentrated on such a small area is definitely gonna cause some damage.

My rough calcuation says: Calculate the potential energy of the pipe before falling: E_p = mgh = 30 lb * 5 ft * 32.17 ft/s² ≈ 482.5 lb-ft

The title of this one had me worried, glad the way it turned out. I have totally enjoyed watching every episode of this home build. Sometimes blank happens but you guys can fix it. I think the liquid nails was a good idea. It wouldn't have made any difference what method you put the tile down with,, if someone decides to twirl the shower rod like a majorette things might go wrong 😅.

You can by diamond tip blades for the multi tool which will cut tile if you ever have to replace one. I would recommend doing your juggling outside in future and then you won't need one anyway.🤣

The problem with gluing them down is they are only supported when the glue hits. A bed if tile cement supports the whole tile uniformly. Spreads the load. Hit and miss bedding of the tile will create stress points. You are right, the pipe would crack most things, but the glue MAY create stress weakness. Hoping for the best for you. LOVE your material. Great videos, charming relationship between the 3 of you. God bless.

This is 100% accurate. If that tile has been properly installed, it wouldn't have cracked. There are videos showing the extreme durability of tile when installed properly. Liquid nails isn't the only way to mess this up though. Plenty of people don't properly install tile even with the cement, and you would end up with the exact same issue. And to be fair, even if everything had been done right, there is still a good shot the tile would have chipped, and needed replacement anyway.

The whole floor needs pulled up and done properly or anytime anything of any weight is dropped you will get cracks ... regular foot traffic may even cause cracks over time.

Just wondering if heat would have got those tiles up easier. Those little mistakes add to the whole build experience and now is as good as new. Looking forward to the next step.

I think there is a big difference between doing work for yourself and doing work for others in that if I’m doing something for myself I can do it anyway I want. If I’m doing it for others then I have to do it the way they want it done. They are doing the work for themselves and they obviously talk to each other about how they are going to do something before they do it. I think that’s awesome they have great communication as a couple and are working together to reach their goals. I can disagree with their methods but that’s it because its not my house to decide how it gets done.
