Is it a vintage aircraft? Is it a warbird? Well, it's both. This is the story of the recently restored P-51C "Thunderbird," which made its public debut at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2023.

Fantastic to see it in it's actual, individual historic colors and not faked up to look like a fighter that fought in Europe.

Saw this thing fly every day last fall at Reno. What a sweetheart! I would have been sorely tempted to sneak a -9 under the cowl although i may be ignorant in that thought.

King. Main thing I’m wondering about is how much of that history still remains like how much of the original metal and material is in that plane today?

I wonder why this P-51C has that leading edge wing "kink." I thought that wasn't incorporated in the design until the D model, unless this was just a purposeful modification done in the rebuild.

At :48 there is a picture of planes on the dry lake bed. Don’t see this plane but looks like 2 other mustangs in similar paint scheme. Wonder whose those were.

The aerial shot is from the '49 race and the other Mustangs would be Paul Mantz' two P-51Cs. Both those survive, one in the Smithsonian and the other (restored to stock, perhaps unfortunately) flyable with Kermit Weeks.

A stunning recreation but not a restoration. The airplane was completely destroyed after the pilot bailed out in 1955. N5528N, known both as Thunderbird and Mr. Alex, was being flown on a hail suppression operation by James M. Cook. After takeoff, one of the Mustang’s main landing gear failed to retract. When he was unable to resolve the problem, Cook flew the Mustang over unoccupied terrain north of Morrill, Nebraska, and bailed out. The airplane crashed, exploded and the wreckage burned. N5528N was completely destroyed.

Amazing what can be done with virtually nothing. Most of today's flyable Spitfires are the same way. And now I'm thinking about F2G Race 74 again...
