You put up the wrong picture for Norman Manley, that is Michael his son. The attempt to build Palisadoes was hampered by funds but the Second World War changed that when the Royal Navy took over the project and built their air base HMS BUZZARD there. Antisubmarine squadrons were stationed there flying Swordfish aircraft and one such squadron was 835 who one of it men, Lieutenant Commander E.E. Barringer RNVR published a book mentioning his time in Jamaica 🇯🇲. Commercial aircraft was allowed to operate there along side military and continued after the Royal Navy left 1944. Vernam Field saw antisubmarine squadrons based there too, one squadron (VS-60) lost an airplane near Portland Cottage in broad daylight and it never found. This during a training excersize and suffered a simular faith in Rocky Point and that one is still there in 30ft of water, 6 men died in that crash and I'm in contact with the co-pilot's family. A airship squadron was also based at Vernam and one ship was lost during a patrol of the Panama shipping route. During that time B-29 Bombers came here on training missions to bomb Japan. Don't forget Little Goat Island, it was a base for seaplane squadron (VP 33,206 etc) VP32,that made one stop there is responsible for the sinking of the German sub U-759 off Morant Point 1943. Caribbean International Airways had a tragic ending, it started out with seaplane (PBY's) but the first land based plane (a Load Star) they acquired crashed ofter taken off at Palisadoes killing the CEO all on board except one individual. One of it's surviving planes still exists in a museum in Canada.

Great video man. I remember as a kid my dad used to race at Vernam field, then as a teen j used to see those undocumented flights come in when in wasn't to school at Garvey.

But i never know that jamaica made planes back then imagine if those manufacturers got the help they needed we would be making planes even cars😤🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
