Aphex Twin had a unique approach to some of his Remixing work in the 90's. Webshop: www.thomann.de Instagram: / voltage.labs Facebook: / thomanninternational Twitter: thomann / thomann Pinterest: / thomannde
@@tobietera exactly, he literally corrected that very interpretation up there by the interviewer and somehow people still manage to misunderstand things.
I think its quite self-centered and disrespectful, regardless of whether the track is a banger. The original artist asked for an honourary thing, your interpretation of their work. Sending a random file is totally disrespectful of both the original artist and their work. They might not complain if revenues are positive but still that won't stop you from showing the world what a self-centered as*hole you are. If it happened sometime as an exception / accident its probably better to keep it to yourself. Think of commissioning an abstract painting of yourself from a painter. Would him giving you one of his pre-painted work be seen as clever? It totally misses the point of what was supposed to be delivered and your ethos as a supposed artist. The fact that the painting was abstract and therefore my face possibly won't even be obviously discernible makes no difference. Handing me a ready-made painting equals zero effort to create what was being commisioned. Therefore I (the one who pays) would technically even have a case for suing for breach of contract.
Inspired by this kind of activity, I submitted the extra track from Sonic Youth's "Experimental jet set, trash and no star" as some of my Btec coursework.
i think that’s just outright stealing. i think he’s saying instead of remixing anything he just posted one of his unreleased tracks and nobody noticed the difference(as remixes can often sound/resemble nothing like the original)
To be fair his 'remix' ( it wasn't a remix , it's an original piece) on Further Down the Spiral is a fucking masterpiece and one of my favourite pieces of electronic music.
i'm pretty sure this only happened a couple of times. in any case, remixes can and often do sound very different to the originals, that's kiiiiinda the whole point of a remix. it may have originally meant a rearrangement that was close to the original, but that changed decades ago. remixers have carte blanche to reinterpret a track however they see fit and richard took that fact to heart
Dude cracked the matrix at such young age. Fucking artist all the way, fuck the rules, do what you wanna and boy did he do. Marvelous specimen of humans, one of modern times greats.
Awful takes from these commenters. Richard is brilliant, and has never been one to focus his energy into creating versions of other people's music. If they knew anything about him, they would realize it's not smart to ask him for a remix of your track.
Well... they do if you agree it with them and they fulfill their end of the bargain by paying you. That's a contract. But if they were happy with what he did and took it and paid him, then more power to him. AFX is a legend.
@@UMBR. agree, seems like they were happy with what they got, but strange take to say they somehow didn’t deserve it. There’s also the gesture of appreciation from one artist to another that should carry some mutual respect.
20 years ago I would have thought this would've been cool and a testament to his skills, but now I can't help but think how much of a dick move that is for not being organised, taking things seriously and just handing off a completely unrelated track lol. Interesting story though
I never get their music, just, I can't feel it... I'm meloman & audiophile by myself & that's first time when I can't understand the music, it's just nowhere, it engages no feeling, no emotions, nothing, I just don't understand what they're about... I have thousands of techno tracks in list but, this is just like an empty box.. I listened them & there was nothing... sorry..
Haahahahahah... Get over yourselves, you pompous gits! I can't believe people are suddenly acting butt-hurt over this nearly 30 years later; when at the time AFX's quirks were what added to his aura.... An aura which led to all these random people wanting to pay him to remix them to begin with........... These people were cashing in on him just as much as he was on them....... The state of ya's..... Do you complain about the Sex Pistols sticking two finger up at the industry too?
And where are the lemonheads now? Maybe they should have gone with his 'remix', he might have actually made THEM sound talented. Plus, they all know what to expect from RDJ. If he gave them any track period that they could release they should have considered it a gift.
I still like windowlicker, johnny, vordhorsbn and a few other tracks but he has that weird sam friedman vibe about him, and straight up lying and not caring about music as a music producer (in this case with the remixes) says a lot about him.
Oh I think he cares a lot about music. Otherwise why would he make so many tracks consistently for decades? He just doesn‘t give a fuck about the music industry and its practices or recognition by others. I think this makes his approach very pure and inspirational.
@@felixfleer4507 you're saying basically if he was a chef he would have cooked for years without giving a fuck about the food industry that just describes a bland chef bro.
@@LalaLa-ld1gs „Music Industry“ is not synonymous with „Music“ or „Music culture“. The anecdote in this video is about an artist with a big unexpected commercial success that never tried to be commercially successful. Suddenly managements of other completely unrelated bands tried to profit from his his work by commissioning remixes from him because he was en vogue and not because it made sense artistically. He said: Alright, I‘ll take you money. Here you go with my „remix“! For me this is not only consistent with a big love and appreciation for music but also straight up hilarious :D
@@felixfleer4507 apply what he did to another example, one where you hire a man to re-design your daughters bedroom for example, you already having an example and asking him to sort of follow the template whilst adding elements of his own, you go back home to discover a fking hookah bar style bedroom, your money and the dude already gone, and you standing there like Dana White at a Connor Mcgregor press conference saying "isn't he awesome? 😍".... Lol. I'm not one to dislike stuff especially artists that I was inspired by, but THIS particular act is just barely short of it being a scam. Stop being in denial he did a shitty thing, funny or not it's still shitty practice.
unless you can back it up with specific reasoning (relative to what?), then "overrated" is just "I don't like it" while picking a word out of the negative criticism hat.

@@blarghblargh Aphex twin is well overrated. anybody who makes electronic music knows how easy it is to throw something together with a few bits of kit. AT just got lucky. .. and don't come back at me with if its so easy where are your masterpieces
@@iamyourfuture808RDJ has a very distinctive style, enough so that people who aren't even huge fans of electronic music in general enjoy his music, unlike that so many endlessly derivative and boring lesserthans. There's very few artists of his caliber, and you will never be there.
Unprofessional to say the least. Rude and disrespectful also come to mind. Too much dope and no strong leadership thats why they will always stay in the margin 😢
@@PlaysWithChildrenMost definitely a huge pioneer, I would consider Kraftwerk the godfathers of electronic music but Richard is without a doubt one of the most legendary music producers of our era 👌
he has millions of fans around the world, has made music continuously since the mid '80s, and is lauded as one of the most influential electronic musicians of all time by musicians and music lovers alike, so forgive me if i respectfully disagree with your shitty take. also, better to be a has-been than a never-been such as yourself :)
