Soldering Dielectric Union | How To Plumbing
How to solder copper pipe and re-pipe home. Well, how did this come about? I felt that there's was a lot of people out there that like Diy projects and they do have the skill, and some of us have more time than we have money, but they all have one thing in common is they just need a little encouragement and close up on know-how. And in this video, I provide just that. Every shot is close-up and personal. I made these videos with the mindset of, How would I want to learn by watching videos, and these are the results. Close-up shots of what is really going on. You know let me see the move to the sideman. I don't want to see you I want to see what you're doing. I can't learn anything looking at you show me that work, please. Thank you! J Yep that's just how I feel when I watch a video and the guy in the videos just wants to show himself and talk and talk and talk and close to the end, he shows a little shot of the work. Thanks a lot, Pal for wasting my time. Now in these how to solder copper pipe and re-pipe home you will learn things like How to solder copper pipe, How to keep from burning things around you, How to hang copper pipe to the floor joist, how to prepare the copper pipe and pipe fitting to be soldered, Soldering copper pipe and fitting in the horizontal position, how to solder Dielectric unions on water heater without burning the inserts, and much more. Soldering copper pipe is not as hard as it may seem with a little know-how and practice you can become a pro in no time. Did you know that there are different grades of copper pipe? Yes, there's Type "M" used mostly on the residential job like your home and there's Type "L" used for commercials like large buildings and stores and even some homes where there communities water is very hard. And then there's "K" Copper Which is the thickest of the copper used a lot In A/C lines. "K" copper and "L" also come in soft rolls that you can roll out up to 60' but I wouldn't recommend you use it for inside water piping unless you're going to roll it out under a cement foundation called the loop system. They also have DWV copper. DWV copper is used for waste and vent in older homes and businesses DWV Meaning Drainage Waste and Vent. You can find out the type of copper by just reading the side of the pipe they are all labeled. It is important to note whenever you use a copper pipe and you're going to tie it into another type of metal pipe like Galvanized you will need a transition fitting to go between the two like a dielectric union so that the two metals don't touch each other because if they do there is something called electrolyzes that travel between the two making the metals crude out fast then normal. I buy a lot of my copper pipe from Plumbing Supply Houses, The Home Depot, Lowe's, and when you buy the copper fitting and if you're going to do a large job like re-pipe your home get the contractors pack and save money. The type of flux I get is called (NO CORD ) Solder type (Lead-free) any brand. The sand cloth I get the (Fiberglass cloth )good wet or dry. Gas (acetylene) in the blue bottle and your local hardware store. I Always keep a pair of Channel Lock Pliers in my back pocket when I work for quick and easy access when I need to egg shape and copper fitting to stay in place. Always egg shape it when the fitting is on the pipe because if you egg shape it before that it will be hard to put on the pipe.

never apply heat to the water heater. the dielectric union can (should) be soldered off of the water heater.

Nice work. Good to see someone still cares about neat solder joints.

A small amount of electric current is created when water flows through dissimilar metals such as brass/copper and steel. The plastic sleeve and rubber gasket breaks this connection. If this fitting was not used, this current can create galvanic corrosion which is unsightly, can cause leaks, and premature tank failure. This connection can also simplify installation of a new tank if it happens to be a replacement tank with the same dimensions.

Ah man that was a great video. I was afraid to use a dielectric fitting. After watching I feel like a bad dude. Pretty easy.

You can get screw end dielectric union so you don’t need to soldering the union.

Hey Brother, that's a real nice job! I like your torch, too! Nice mellow flame...

Nice solder job. Just saw a plumber drip solder on the pipes and fitting. I hope he was having a bad day, because it looked awful.

At top of video (where you can't see the top end of the 'random pipe'), is where I also need to solder on a sweat to MIP fitting. I'm trying to find best way of preventing the plastic part of the dielectric union from melting. The plastic mart must be pre-assembled on to the pipe because it wont fit over the sweat to MIP fitting afterwords. Any tricks?

One trick you can use in tight spots like that. Cut a slit in the plastic ring, then snap it back around brass fitting after solder brass to copper.

Thank you...whats the key to get a good dolder buildup right at the joint edge...when i do it ..it just keeps sucking in and doesnt have a nice buildup at outer joint.

@theartofplumbing

Yes it well, but I remove it before I solder and then put it back on.

I melted my pkastic piece....do they sell new pkastic pieces at home depot?
@theartofplumbing
@theartofplumbing 3 года назад
Not that I know of may be at a plumbers supply house. I Know it may to late now, but always remove the plastic ring. I solder the brass piece on first then slip on insulation ring. Don't feel bad. I've seen plumbers burn the plastic as well.

I have no idea why they sell a steel/brass dielectric union the opening will rust almost completely shut touching the brass in a couple of years, makes no sense. I order all brass dielectric unions and never have this corrosion problem and loss of protection.

I CANT FIND ANY LOCAL STORES THAT SELL THE ALL BRASS DIALECTIC FITTING, WHAT CAUSES THE OPENING TO CLOSE UP IF THE PLASTIC WASHER SEPARATES THE 2 METALS ??

Is this a dielectric union or just a union? I can not see the non metal part.

You might melt the attached nipple plastic insulator.
@theartofplumbing
@theartofplumbing 2 года назад
Your right, but if you notice in the video, I removed the plastic insert before I soldered it. 😉
@jinpark5324
@jinpark5324 2 года назад
@@theartofplumbing I mean the nipple instead of dielectric union. The heat will pass down to the nipple. Most of nipples have plastic inner insulation.
@theartofplumbing
@theartofplumbing 2 года назад
@@jinpark5324 yep again your right, but I'm no using a dielectric nipple, and if so some would really putting way to much heat to solder brass insert and directing the flam right at the nipple, the dip, to melt that you really have to be applying the heat directly to it. Notice the flam is directed away from water heater. Good thinking 🤔
