Most of the time if you see and semi or a diesel pick up hauling butt down the highway and you see a puff of black smoke come out, or even when a diesel is going from parked to taking off, they will smoke because the driver is slamming the fuel pedal down forcing more fuel into the engine. I do it a lot on purpose when some A-hole is tailgating me, slam the fuel pedal down and cloud them with black smoke to make them back off.

Black smoke, much higher fuel consumption and total lack of power can also be caused by a faulty turbocharger or (like in my case) a broken wastegate operating lever!

I'm not in the States, my problem is black smoke under hard acceleration on a non DPF (removed), EGR blocked, intake cleaned, always used Decarboniser in the fuel as well as a common rail lubricity agent. Vehicle is older Audi Q7 4.2 TDi, which is twin turbo V8. It has been tuned to stage 2.8, the reason not stage 3 is to slightly detune in an attempt to reduce black smoke emissions which it certainly did. I am thinking about taking it back to stage 1, which I found was very economical. Since the Q7 no longer will tow a van this will be the ideal fuel map I believe, as I believe stages 2,3,2.8 are overfueled under hard acceleration. The DPFS always caused problems and since their removal it's been great apart from black smoke under hard acceleration. It may be possible that the intake valves have carbon built up on the valve stem side and so I am looking at trying to remove this soon. So could the soot under hard acceleration be caused from a too rich fuel to air ratio on fuel map 2.8? Or could be partly caused by carbon build up on the intake valves, or both? The Q7 has done 250,000 klms.
@BellPerformance
@BellPerformance 6 лет назад
Could be any of those. Soot or carbon buildup almost always has to do with incomplete fuel combustion, which could come from a rich fuel mix.
@DonziGT230
@DonziGT230 6 лет назад
Anything that restricts air flow can lead to black smoke, but in the case of a 'tuned' motor it's almost always because the tune cranks up the fuel to make more power. The timing also plays into it. Max power with a diesel will almost always result in visible smoke, but you can turn it down to not smoke without loosing too much power, assuming everything else is working properly. Rather than use 'generic' tunes you can get your car dyno tuned, that could achieve a clean tune with the most power.

This has put my mind to rest a little. I rebuilt my diesel engine and it has been pouring black smoke under heavy throttle, I know the intercooler is leaking and quite a bit, that will throw the air off.
@brucejones2354

@jdd6447 6 лет назад
Gibbet Hoskins is to spool up turbo . Once turbo picks up you will see less smoke
@anthonyperkins7556
@anthonyperkins7556 2 года назад
It can be contributed to by three causes - dirty or clogged diesel fuel injectors, inadequate poor or non existent diesel engine servicing, or a deliberately set over-rich diesel fuel mixture that puts too much diesel into the engine causing black smoke on acceleration, at a steady speed or under load I.e. towing a trailer with a diesel van truck or car, or operating a machine on a tractor.

@DonziGT230
@DonziGT230 6 лет назад
Depends on the engine and how much smoke. With an older mechanically injected engine it's pretty common to get a little smoke when you first hit the accelerator until the turbo spools up. Any modern emissions controlled engine should be controlling the fueling to prevent smoke. A little black smoke is bad for the air, but good for making power and reducing turbo lag.

A comment from Brandon W ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You my friend are a ******* idiot.... Black smoke can also mean higher horsepower, in other words a higher fuel to air ratio. Many do this on purpose. There are different shaped injectors, cat deletes and stacks all to increase horsepower, stop reading out of a book made by Obama and actually learn about diesels **** *** ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Brandon, Thanks for taking to time to comment. Whether or not someone modifies their diesel or uses different injectors or stacks, the principle is the same. Black smoke means unburned fuel, typically from a mixture that is too rich. It doesn't matter the intent. When you see black smoke, there's an excess of fuel relative to the air present in the mix. That's the bottom line. If you want to talk about user intentions, go ahead and talk away.
@1994WN
@1994WN 10 лет назад
Alot of guys over fuel their trucks... See it alot with common rail guys, just outrageously overfuel their engine. Black smoke doesn't necessarily mean more power... Just means un burnt fuel
@johnyager2507
@johnyager2507 10 лет назад
My Cummins will blow smoke when the turbo is still spooling up because the amount of air has to catch up to the amount of diesel being injected. That's not because it's being over fueled. That's what I believe Brandon W was trying to get at. That's a typical thing on higher hp rigs much like mine.
@1994WN
@1994WN 10 лет назад
So you have poorly written tunes?
@1994WN
@1994WN 10 лет назад
There's still not a turbo efficient enough to prevent smoke on higher performance engines but it can be greatly eliminated by properly written tunes. black smoke is wasted power

The black smoke can eather be cause by that stuff but your for getting a couple of things I have a 1996 F-250 with a 7.3 obs I have a smoke switch and a a lope tune and that causes it to smoke and white smoke can be also caused by a blown turbo and Abunch of other things and for the blue smoke it's not blue it's black with a blue tint and that is caused by burning oil like my mud truck it has. A inline 6 hurcules diesel in it its a M35A2C (deuce and a half) and it has a blue tint to it because I'm running it of a 50,50 50 diesel and 50 oil

I have a 2 Liter Diesel with a six gear manual transmission and I usually only get black smoke when accelerating in a gear higher than 4th, do you know why that could be? It does have a dpf and I thought it was just clogged up but I did two 700-800 km trips to and from my university city since I got it so I don't think that thing could be any emptier by now

@@BellPerformance hi thanks for the reply, turns out I had a torn airpipe connecting my turbo and engine which caused insufficient pressure whenever the turbo was engaged while my injection system still dumped a bunch of fuel like it was supposed to which caused it to run rich everytime i accelerated just enough for my turbo to kick in

I have a Cummins diesel on my boat - black smoke... was told to clean air filters. I had them cleaned. Didn’t work. Now I’m told it could be the injectors or turbo 🙈
@BellPerformance

Many times, the injectors have something to do with black smoke. At least they had you start with something simple, and work backwards from there.
@josepeixoto3384
@josepeixoto3384 4 года назад
@@BellPerformance Simple?? injectors are not simple to remove ,buy new,or send to a specialist,and install and re-code (if that is the case); and it is expensive!! Simple would be a bad MAP or MAF,if one is lucky.

Hello guys. I was wondering one thing. Normally when a diesel car is remapped for huge hp gains also gain tons and tons of black smoke. Isn't beneficial to balance the fuel:air ratio when remapping for power? And if so why do they smoke so bad?
@BellPerformance
@BellPerformance 6 лет назад
I would assume that you would want to balance the fuel:air mixture when doing that. But I am not a mechanic myself. However, you can email our master mechanic James Dunst at jdunst@bellperformance.net and he will certainly able to clear things up for you.
@DonziGT230
@DonziGT230 6 лет назад
The max power from a diesel almost always results in black smoke. The ratio and timing can be optimized to not smoke, but it will loose a little power when compared to a richer smoky ratio. If it's making tons of smoke it's being excessively fueled, they don't have to make tons of smoke, but there will be some if seeking max power.

This guy told you white smoke bad turbo. Right oil passes along the turbo shaft and if the seal leaks it can be blasted up withthe outward air from turbo into intake system and be burnt. Oil burning is blue smoke only.
@brucejones2354
@brucejones2354 6 лет назад
If the bearings are seizing then the rotor will not spin up to speed and won't provide enough air to the engine causing black smoke. I've also had a turbo failure where the compressor side exploded shedding all the veins, extreme loss of Powe and great volume of black smoke.
@koitorob
@koitorob 6 лет назад
White smoke is water. A knackered turbo would leak oil into the mixture which is blue. Take off your turbo pipes and check for a lot of oil.

(Smoky emissions in any vehicle is a sign that something is not as it should be). totally untrue, where's your facts ? This is only true if you drive a gas engine which i assume is all you have driven in your life. Totally false on a diesel
@BellPerformance
@BellPerformance 7 лет назад
When you're talking about black smoke, it sure is. Black smoke is a sign of partially burned fuel. If diesel fuel is being burned completely, you won't have black smoke, since complete combustion of hydrocarbons yields carbon dioxide and water.
@BellPerformance
@BellPerformance 4 года назад
It would also be a sign that the emissions control systems aren't functioning properly. The DPF is designed to catch all of that. So, again, smoky emissions with a diesel is a sign that something is not as it should be.
