On our way back to the UK we wanted to make changes to the van to reduce our dependence on LPG as we knew with 2 full tanks the cold weather would see us running out of LPG for our existing heating system. We ordered a diesel heater and had a small amount of red diesel delivered to the location we were isolating for 10 days on our return from the EU.
Here's a link to our website to buy the heater shown in our video. www.gjot.uk/mo...

PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING. As we mentioned in the video we fitted this during quarantine after returning from the EU. So this install isn’t 100% completed and more parts are on order to weather proof everything, make the pump quieter, protect the hole in the floor, protect the air intake and heat wrap the exhaust pipe, amongst other items. We said we’d follow up this install in a future video, and we’ll do exactly that. Thanks 👍🏻😁

Nice install, this heaters are great, have one of 5kw in my Transit connect! To silence the pump, just suspend it with cable ties, makes a big difference! :-D

Hi you could buy a silencer for the room air intake. About the pump ticking. There is also a more silent pump from Autotherm. I would wanted to ask why you didn’t go for the fuel from the main tank. But the red diesel explains it. And the position on the door helps with spilling. Absolutely brilliant position.

Well that saved me asking question re an upgraded turret plate lol 👍🏻 Haha sound like I know what I’m taking about but it’s only because Darren has told me what I had to order for us lol. Hopefully get ours fitted in the next week or so, weather permitting. Hope I’ve both warmer now, useful video thanks guys 👍🏻

The silencer has a small drain hole on the side so should be mounted with the hole facing downwards, not sideways.

Another great video guys - really impressed by the heater. Interested to know your total daily power usage in the current winter conditions now that you have another ~1amp drain with the new heater. When it comes to the crunch will the heater be used at the expense of Mandy's coffee maker (ha ha) Also with your upcoming change to a compressor fridge (presumably only electric) will the meagre winter sunny spells be sufficient for all your needs?
@johnmandy
@johnmandy 3 года назад
We’ve got 216AH of usable power, with Mandy’s coffee, heater on, 12v compressor fridge and everything else we only use roughly 45AH a day. We get a small amount of solar charge and, right now with the bad weather, we run our engine to get a charge from the B2B So we never come close to running out of power now we have all the new upgrades we’ve just added

I fitted one to my Vivaro last year, just a couple of tip for watchers. If your running the fuel hose under your van, run it through garden hose then the sub frame / chassis this will stop rub on the fuel hose. I used a step drill to cut through the floor. You can use a mount for fitting the heater through the floor which cuts down the problem of melting your motor home installation. Finally prior to turning off, run it at about 23° for 1min this helps to clear the soot from the heater.

I've installed 8 of these around a static caravan park and people love them especially when there making a great saving on the electric @ 25p per Kw 🙄compared to purchasing kerosene at 60p ltr. My top tip... To help prevent the annoying clicking sound in the van; try replacing the fuel inline pipe from the pump into the base of the heater with a softer compound pipe. I learnt this from one heater supplied with a green pipe but with different clips. The noise seems to travel inside the pipe from the pump into the heating chamber. My 2nd tip... be careful where you mount the fuel tank as in summer the fuel gives off gas and will leak into your living/sleeping area making it stinky 😷
@johnmandy
@johnmandy 3 года назад
We’ve waiting for some better fuel pipe to be delivered so hopefully that’ll help with the click, by summer we’ll have this tapped into our main diesel tank which will be better 😁👍🏻

I'd recommend putting a power switch on the screen controller, it will go very dim after a while and I'm sure you've found it quite bright in the night. Also keep an eye on the floor insulation, it's only eps foam so cant withstand much heat and the exhaust will easily exceed 200 during normal usage, exhaust wrap for motorbikes will solve this or you can get a "turret mount" to replace the plate . The troubleshooting Facebook group is a great resource as well. Cheers guys :)
@johnmandy

Thanks Charlie, it’s an interim fit as it was going to go under the drivers seat so we bow need some extras for where it is which are on their way.. we use a really low tech solution of hanging flannel over the screen 😁😂

@vanscran1672 3 года назад
A great video so thanks for that. I helped fit one to a friends van and we put the fuel supply pipe through the cap, this reduces the chance of a leak from drilling into the bottom of the tank, and fitting the supplied outlet. It all works perfectly, the cap will need a vent or screw it down lightly. It looks as though you have that ridged fuel line which is great, they don't always seem to come with that so you have to purchase that separately.

Thanks for watching, we’re swapping the fuel line as that is far too noisy at the mo, it’s one of the finishing touches we’re making 😁👍🏻

Educational and informative as always thank you. Two bits of kit that may help others with a similar install: You can get something called a “diesel heater turret plate” that safely passes the external pipes through an insulated floor (and makes sealing the hole you’ve cut a lot easier too), and one source of noise from the diesel pump is through the diesel liquid itself in the feed pipe so they make a damper that looks like a grey mushroom - search for “heater fuel dosing pump damper kit”. Stay safe, and warm of course 🔥🔥🔥

I cut a big hole, probably twice the size of yours and used a plywood plate to mount mine. This gave additional clearance for the exhaust. Mine is a "5KW" and the exhaust glows cherry red on full bore. The ducting insulation is a good idea, I used exhaust wrap on mine. I would keep an eye on the insulation in case its starts to melt. Another great vlog

Hi, after a year or so of using my diesel heater Ive collected the following snipets of interest. If you suspend the pump (mine hangs on about 2 inches of cable tie through the bolt hole in the rubber mount) its virtually silent. If you mostly run it at low outputs then the combustion chamber tends to soot up, so its worth giving it a blast regularly, and thirdly, they run happily on paraffin (or jet A1 if your rich enough!) and they don't tend to soot up as fast on paraffin. Hope Cooper enjoys his new heater :-)
@johnmandy

Thanks Peter.. we’ve a few things underway to help with the pump, glad to know suspending it helps a lot 😁 First thing in the morning we have it on full to help blast the door and so it’s warm enough to get dressed 😊 Coop loves the new heater 👍🏻

Good job mate. Try fitting diesel heater on a ribbed floor van no quite so simple. But nobody tells you (and its not in heater parameters booklet) that they don't work if one does not have correct voltage levels in your batteries, it will drain the batteries. Then you have a problem. Never use engine battery to power a diesel heater unless you run engine every day (as in a HGV).

I ended up mounting my pump onto a 3/4" coolant hose, and attaching that hose to the van. Gives a soft mounting, you can put bolts through coolant hose, it's very strong. Also I used proper rubber (vacuum hose possibly, cotton shrouded) hose in a loop, as the 'thwack' gets transmitted along semi-rigid pipe. BTW the pipe thickness doesn't affect the flow, as far as I know.

Good idea having a second form of heating and a bonus of being cheaper too. My van has diesel heating which is connected to the main fuel tank and works really well. I also found out last year that it is useful to have a backup option. My gas regulator packed up but because we were on an electric hook up we could use the microwave to cook everything and make drinks plus switch the fridge over to 240v however before we go out again I will carry a spare regulator. I think I will also get some form of table top cooker for another option. Cheers Martin

Hi J & M I put a 5k Chinese diesel heater in my workshop thinking it may help to warm the place to say I am disappointed would be mild. Its best temperature to date coming out of the useless thing is 24 Degrees by the time you've got the gauge a foot away its just a cold draft. We have an Eberspacker in our static in Scotland and you can't hold your hand near it for very long. When I fitted my Chinese diesel heater to the small van I built. I didn’t like the idea of the diesel pipe coming out of the bottom of the tank so I drilled a hole at the top near the filler and used the pick up pipe I think it’s designed for using it I have your main diesel tank. I’ve put the pipe through the little hole and are used tape to hold the nut in a spanner that is designed for brake pipes. So the spanner had a little split in the side to go over brake pipes so when I tightened up the nut I could get the spanner back out of the neck of the tank. Stay safe🚐☕️☕️👍🏼🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🌈🙏🏼💙❤️💙❤️

Hi Both, good vid as usual, always wondered why you hadn’t done this ages ago, I’ve had one in my caravan for 2 years now, with no faults. Just one thing I would have done different on your install, that’s is I would have used a turret plate to go through your floor. I also think you should have stressed the importance of having a CO alarm, you probably have one anyway but forgot to mention it. One more thing, there is a product called Afterburner which allows full control over every aspect of the heater, it’s open source, however the developer has stopped shipping them to the Uk for now due to the extra taxes/ paperwork involved since Brexit. You’ll find the Afterburner details on a dedicated Fb page. Hope this is useful info, all the best, stay warm, safe and enjoy👍Neil

I have a Webasto diesel heater mounted outside/underneath my van (in a protective housing). I do find it quite noisy still and the ticking of the pump is very noticeable but is tolerable and you get used to it. I'm always very conscious about running it when close to other vans or habitation because of the noise outside. Not the best thing for stealth camping though but very efficient. I've thought of adding a silencer but have heard they can cause issues - My heater is not very accessible however for servicing

Hi Guys. Good vid..when your refining that install..i would get another tank. Same type if you like...But use a stand pipe..and take feed from the TOP. I've done this fot 2 diesel heaters.. Zero chance of leaks from the tank..eventually bottom outlet will fail..not good. Anyways keep up the good vids. Ian &Dee from Ireland💏☘

The tank is designed with the feed at the bottom, someone sat down and designed it that way, so as ours works perfectly that way I’m going to leave it so it’s neat and working as designed

Hi guys, I'm glad to hear that you finally "warmed" to the idea of a diesel heater, we did it to ours last year and its been an absolute boon! Sod the gas set up. PS, 1688 let's you into the settings and you can adjust the kilowatt settings. Welcome to the diesel club. Also before you turn it off just ramp it up to boost for 10 minutes before switching off, just keeps it clean and reliable.

Check this RU-vid video out, it'll show you how to alter the settings using 1688, plus I agree, don't trust the temperature setting, you can change it over to hertz (pump pulses) so you can can manually control the temperature in your van, John McKay47 is also very good, he has a series of videos all about these units, to change to manual control simultaneously press both the top buttons briefly John. Oops, I forgot the link, I've added it below 👍

Good work! Apparently you should mount the silencer with the angle it comes with as there is a drain hole for moisture, up to you though. Also I have the same controller as you and if you hold the up and down arrows it primes it without error codes👍 if you ever run dry. Also it is a 3-5KW or a 5-8KW as it just depends weather it is a high or low setting👍

We have one on our boat and the fuel comes from our tank which also runs the boat. Currently we are allowed to use red diesel but the EU are stopping this even though we are out. I shouldn't think it will affect heating but I dont think we would put in separate tank
@johnmandy

From what we can see heating is exempt from the changes so we should be good. We can get red diesel easily where we are but if it becomes difficult we have the main tank kit at the ready 😁👍🏻

@johnmandy
@johnmandy 3 года назад
@@G-ra-ha-m those are changes we are making too so good to know they worked for you 😁👍🏻 we can’t run it overnight though, the tick is new so it’s all we can hear
@G-ra-ha-m
@G-ra-ha-m 3 года назад
@@johnmandy I actually suspended it on about 5" of hose. The shock is along the axis of the in-out nozzles as it thumps the fuel across, so if you support it so that is on the 'loosest' (most compliant) axis (The pipe being the stem of a T, with the top of the T being the in-out). The pipe is great, you can drill it and bolt it. This reduced mine to a very dull thud that's difficult to hear.
