Cleaning the EGR valve in your diesel sprinter van is an easy way to help your van run better and also save you lots of money compared to replacing it. This is something ALL Mercedes Sprinter Van owners should know how to do! Usually the first cleaning is necessary around 30,000 miles and it should be done every 15k - 20k miles after that. If your van is doing something weird, others have called it "coughing," but it feels like a slight hiccup while driving, usually between 30mph and 50mph, there is a good chance that it could be your EGR valve and luckily this is an EASY fix! The tools you will need for this job are:

Glad to hear it worked for you! Yeah there’s clearly an issue but if you stay up on keeping it cleaned every 10k miles, jt will make a huge difference.

Thanks for the great video! My EGR valve in my 2018 with OM642 after 30,000 miles was stuck in there very good! I used PB Blaster and Kroil penetrating oil, I could wiggle it a tiny bit, waited overnight and no luck, it would not budge. I ended up removing the two safety torx on the top of the valve that hold the actuator into the block with coolant flow and threaded two of the four longer EGR hold down bolts into the two holes. They bottomed out on the manifold where the EGR mounts, then quarter turns on each gently pressed the EGR out. It worked exactly like taking off a stuck brake rotor by threading a bolt into the 8mm threaded holes made for that purpose.

you're the only person I've ever heard of doing this. this is the only way some of them can be removed. Just like mine, i was bending bars just to twist the egr valve. even using a hammer and punch didnt budge it. Then i realized the two security bits have threads all the way through. and the longer bolts pulled it off with just a hand screwdriver. Even though the bolts didn't leave a single mark, the bolts go outside the gasket anyways, so the gasket surface is safe. Someone needs to make a video on this technique because its a game changer hahaha

So just found out if you have a Mercedes Sprinter and you need a new EGR it is covered at NO COST... There was a class Act Lawsuit earlier this year which basically stated they will fix emissions problems. I took my 2012 Mercedes sprinter in a week ago right before watching this video and was going to clean it myself but since it is covered the Mercedes dealership is actually going to give me a brand new one (they cost about $1200 - $1500 to replace usually). Figured I'd share this since if you don't bring it to their attention then they wont tell you since it is a "Law Suit" and not a "recall." I got my nox sensors fixed about 4-5 months ago at no cost as well... (after spending $5K plus over the years already). Also they don't cover costs that you have done previously to fix the problem so keep that in mind! Hope this is helpful to someone! and thanks for your response earlier @clayton

I can't remember the exact ones i saw before... Also UPDATE ON THE ABOVE paragraph... I took my sprinter into a dealership 3 months ago and I'm still waiting on a new EGR... The van runs okay (as in decent enough to get around), luckily i don't need to drive it much since i have another vehicle. This part has been on back order so even though they are taking care of all the costs they haven't done anything yet since the part is unavailable for the time being

I’ve been doing this since getting my 2013 Sprinter a few years ago. Great tutorial. It makes all the difference and easy to do. Previous owner had it at the dealer often for the chugging issue and they couldn’t diagnose it. This is why I never visit dealers. I’m sure there are good ones but for the most part they can ‘never replicate the issue’ 🙄. But that’s how the dealers make money - certainly isn’t on the vehicle sale.

Agreed NOx cleaning made a difference. My Sprinter has 56K and the former owner took it to the dealer every 20K which I would not suggest. A few additional comments: Mine was a bitch to pull out. I had to use a pry bar under it and I also used a small artist's brush to get to all the innards. Once out I used Scotch green scrubbers on the outer cylinder to remove the baked on crud. Since it didn't come up without a fight, I decided to add a small amount of WD-40 to lube the insertion. Now I have some power off the line..... and maybe better mileage. I was averaging 16 as I have a 4WD Revel and its just over 4 tons.

Great video, thanks! I see where the EGR valve is located on your sprinter. Is that EGR valve immediately downstream of the engine exhaust manifold or attached to the engine somehow NOT downstream of the exhaust manifold? I've also heard of EGR valve being attached to turbo's exhaust manifold. That's not how it is here, is it?

@@GregFulks remove it and clean it. It’s not hard and you don’t need to disconnect the coolant lines. Mine has been perfect since I cleaned it.

@@clayton8465 I questioned the Mercedes Dealership about the Class Act Lawsuit that was filed earlier this year on all emissions problems and they are actually putting a brand new on in at no cost

@ doing stuff. Why did you remove the oil filler? At the beginning you just moved it out of the but at the end it seemed you had removed it somewhere in between and then needed to put it back in. Thanks

It is in the way and is easy to remove and put back so I just popped it out a d moved it so I’d have more room to work on the EGR

@@zackbier the filler cap will go on the rocker cover, so no risk of any thing falling into the engine.. im working on an 09, egr valve is further to the left side, had to drain the coolant, pipes and wiring in the way, next time will be easier.. glow plug light comes on occasionally while he is driving. it starts fine, doesn't miss or smoke.. hope it comes good after im done..
