Thanks for the great video. It's particularly helpful to have the oscilloscope traces for the injector pulses too, as it helps show exactly what the ECU/EMS is doing (or trying to do) in a regeneration cycle and it's not something that other auto channels or publishers seem to do. Thanks again!

You have missed out one key issue: During dynamic regen, the blasts of diesel during the post injection could reach the cylinder walls, and it's washed into the engine oil. If you are running with a clogged DPF, you car will constantly want to regenerate. In my car, had a clogged DPF, but the waring light failed to indicate it soon enough. I have ran about 500miles with it when the light came up. The engine oil level was 1/2" inch above the max line (had an oil change about 300miles beforehand, so the level was good to begin with), and it also smelled like burnet oil and diesel. In the end I sent the filter for cleaning and oil change, and they drained 1liters more oil than the maximum. The factory oil amount in that car was 5,3L, so it was diluted around 20%. So this could ruin your engine. Also mine had a timing chain, which is sensitive to oil quiality. In the end I didn't kill the car because we spotted the issue, but oil dilution is a very big problem!

Very nice and informative video. My Mercedes Benz diesel had a restricted DPF and the only solution was have it opened and professionally cleaned in a DPF Cleaning Shop. It cost me $350.00. An online shop asked me asked me a "low price" of $2,000.00 for a remanufactured DPF. Mercedes DPF can only be opened cutting it in two and later welding it back.

you do know why mercedes have such high prices right? if not, its cause their services are a lot better than other retailers and garages that you go to and their parts can be £200 more because they're built to last you more than a year. say you need a new dpf, you get a price from ats for £150 and one from mercedes for £600. obviously merces are a lot higher because of the build quality and cause they can last longer.

Been driving DPF cars since 2005. First was a 2001 Peugeot 406 HDi. So far I've had no problems with them.

You forgot to mension the system with an extra injector fitted close to the DPF, like renault. That ensures a effective regeneration cycle even in slow traffic with lots of idle time

The best way to clean dpf is to completely take off exhaust system and flush out all soot with paint thinners from both sides period....

The government should have stipulated that there are to be 5 or so standard DPF capsules in all cars that can be removed from the metal casing by opening clamps. There should have been a minimum price DPF manufacturer in every city that takes the the DPF and either cleans, rebuilds or recycles them.

Hi there. I would be grateful for your advice. I have a 2013 diesel cruze 2.0L with BRAND NEW Full motor and a BRAND NEW DPF with brand new oxygen and temp sensors and with less than 10,000Km since install. In the last couple of month i have been getting frequent diesel white smoke every 100km or so and NOT on cold start. It showed P11FF code Fuel pump command signal counter incorrect. the wires to the Fuel pump are all intact and the car start first click with no flat or week spots across the revs. I would appreciate your advice. So what you are saying is, instead of venting exhaust as normal, we are now storing the harmful particles until full then dumping more fuel and particles in the system in an attempt to clean it out? Common Rail diesels typically have higher fuel consumption than pre common rail diesels so doesn't this increase the particulate count and make pollution worse?

Nathan Ward Yes! More fuel is consumed in an effort to reduce the emission of large particles of soot. CARB has been threatening the auto manufacturers with GASOLINE DPF’s as well. This is why you are now seeing “dual fuel injection systems” on gasoline direct injection engines. They add multi port AND direct injectors to avoid using DPF’s on gasoline engines. Can you imagine gas cars needing to regen? Gasoline consumption would skyrocket! California can sure come up with some brainless plans to “clean the air” lol

this is not true. if you drive the vehicle properly (long trips, no short trips...) the dpf will spontaneously regenerate aka burn itself clean without a forced regeneration cycle that requires extra fuel to burn the dpf clean.

I hate the DPF - I am always having issue with it in my 2009 Diesel Hyundai Santa Fe! Can it be removed without complications to other parts etc??? Will it cause sensor issue with the computer etc?

Yes, you can remove it, but it technically won't be legal for road use in the United States. Take it to a performance shop for diesels, they'll take the DPF off your plate for about $1000.00

Blocked DPF will cause the engine to dump diesel into the engine oil - dipstick reads higher. Short trips cannot clear the DPF, replace it

@@iansrving Buying new cars, that "new car/truck smell" is much more likely to give you cancers. That smell comes from the oils vaporizing from the plastics/vinyl.

Remember guys over 90% of times DPF can be washed up with proper chemicals and pressure washer. Washed one can stay working many thousands km more, even be almost like new one. Check Your fuel system (no leaking injectors), boost pressure (higher means better) and egr (closing properly under acceleration). All these things not working correctly engine produce much more soot than it should be and can clog new/washed DPF very quickly also might be reason to clog recent DPF at first place. Don't buy new one if it's not really necessary, it's waste of money.

Now explain the effects of the exhaust while your vehicle is in regen mode. Especially when your vehicle is dumping extra fuel into the exhaust system to get it hot enough to burn off the exhaust waste in the dpf filter. Drives me insane when they say it is better for the environment.

Sebastián Arboleda ... honestly Diesel engines are capable of burning clean without a dpf and catalyst combined. You just have to get your fuel to air ratio adjustments correct. Many people have had deletions done and gain on average 2+ miles per gallon. While these systems not only cause thousands of dollars to be repaired it also causes major engine failures. Not to mention the amount of extra emissions added to the environment to make and clean these systems.

In many countries it is a criminal offense to tamper with the dpf system. It is also an incredibly selfish thing to do. You may get better mpg and more power. However you are allowing carcinogenic byproducts to escape into the atmosphere. These are proven to cause a variety of cancers including lung cancer. This is cancer from secondary smoke inhalation .(but not cigarettes its Diesel smoke). We live in a World where too many people think environmental protection is not important. Not until they or their children get sick. Unfortunately it's then to late.

True but carcinogenic byproducts have probably been escaping into the atmosphere since the industrial revolution.A few thousand people messing with the Dpf filter amongst tens of millions of cars aint going to make any difference .Anyway where does A Dpf filtered car come in to this when they are using more fuel to begin with ? .Also where does it all end up when it regenerates ?

sportshatch all these terrible things about diesel exhaust kinda sound nice, but you’ll never be able prove any of them. Sure I can throw human tissue in a Petrie dish and mix it with soot and find carcinogenic actions. That doesn’t determine that those cells will act in that manner with a functioning immune system behind them. Everyone is forgetting about the invisible Particulate that slips right on Thru a DPF. The tiny ones that have been monitored by the epa floating from Chicago to New York. The visible black particles usually don’t make it very far before they fall to the ground and break down quickly. Be sure you understand exactly what chemistry is taking place here. Then, once you do, it will seem better to be so sure of something as to talk about it as fact.

Question- just bought a diesel VW, and all of this is new to me. I have seen a fuel additive that is supposed to clean the filter. Recommended? Effective?

Helps, but its not sure how help it will give. Best and most sure way to keep your DPF alive, is to go for a ride, and run it above 3000rpm for 10-15 mins. Once/month or once/ 2 months. This will keep your dpf alive and fresh :D

@@sakhsdragunof That's what I hate about diesel - I have to drive it the way it is healthy for the diesel. I prefer to drive the way I want! With my other petrol car everything sounds perfect even when I drive calmly around the city for months without having to rev up to unclog the dawm thing.

What happened about the discussion regarding the Differential pressure sensor , you were supposed to talk about later then ? At around 01:08. There is a glow plug fitted somewhere along the exhaust which heats up to help turn the poisonous gases into harmless gases , why has this not been covered ? If the glow plug fails to operate for itself failing or a blown fuse feeding it , that will cause the DPF to soon clog up and go into limp mode and completely clogging the DPF up . I know this as I had a transit that this happened to due to a gross incompetent garage paid fuck loads of money to sort out but took my company for a money pit , to which I ended up resorting to replacing a blown fuse and rengerating it myself on my own laptop and that fixed the glow plug issue , the garage lost the contract, mmm 🤔 I wonder why ? Half baked video not covering the entirety of how DPFs actually work .

For regeneration do you have to drive or can you set your idol higher in park?

Regeneration is triggered typically by rpm, speed and engine temperature, but every car is different. We recommend you check with your vehicle manufacturer, they will typically recommend a driving habit to prompt a regeneration, sometimes it is in the owners handbook.

Regeneration is done during Engine load which means driving preferably at higher speeds in lower gears ideally motorways etc above 2000 RPM..,Reving at idle adds to the problem that is more soot accumulation..

Soot is carbon, the carbon is burned off at high heat and becomes carbon dioxide, a gas. So to heat turns a solid into a gas. This is the same thing that happens in a camp fire, you have carbon (wood) converted into CO2 (gas)

if it's clogged, take it of(fairly simple) clean it and put is back. Replacement is not necessary in most cases.

45 minutes every 2 weeks... seems reasonable, if the car you want to buy, has no petrol version. Just take better care of your diesels, and you won't have to spend thousands on DPF renovation.

Big Oil is a $600+ billion dollar a year industry with the vast majority of sales going to the U.S. Do you really think the government wants more efficient cars that will start cutting down on consumption? Hell no, they would rather keep more inefficient gasoline cars and keep the money flowing into the corrupt pockets of our government officials. I bought a newer Jetta TDI because I knew once they are gone, they will never be back to the States. At least not for a long time becasue the cheated the emmissions. lol

Random Channel reduction would certainly be the goal, IF the fuel wasn’t taxed at 54.5 cents per gallon! In that case, burning an extra 10-20 million gallons per month to regen diesel dpfs would make perfect sense to the state and fed road budgets!

You are mixing to different problems: Harmful pollutants and global warming. The main problem for the environment is CO2 because is a greenhouse gas but it's not toxic at all for humans. NOX's are extremely harmful to humans for humans even in low concentration but they are not as harmful to the environment in those concentrations. DPF is focused on reducing gases toxic for humans

I got 15 mm over max oil kevel ca 3 liters of petrol mixed with oil and petrol consumption 2-3 liters bigger. I could burn out on highway if no reaction. This solution is completely stupid and unfriendly for driver. I say no for all dpf or gpf so I will never buy any car with this solution.

Diesel is for trucks - they can toll more, they are heavier, more expensive and fuel efficient. Putting this into a car is plain stupid. Diesel cars are louder, more expensive and much more problematic.

If it were up to me, we wouldn't have them on diesels. Studies have shown that smaller particles are more dangerous than big ones to the lungs. These essentially just burn extra fuel to turn big ash particulates into smaller ones.
