Volkswagens' "DieselGate" is one for the record books. I'm not sure where this one will end up, but it's not going to be good for VW, and it shouldn't. It's one thing to be negligent, it's quite another to game the system. That's exactly what VW did with their 'clean diesel' vehicles sold in the US. Although I think it's worth pointing out that this could go well beyond the US. That's when things will get really interesting.
The gist is that VW deliberately altered their diesel vehicles sold in the US to alter their performance, and therefore emissions, when being tested for emissions. Yep, that really happened. VW has even admitted to this wrongdoing.
I'm sure we'll have plenty to talk about on this one so I'll just get to the links.

HAHAHA, VW took "Stay Dirty" way too serious!

+HumbleMechanic They were never "rolling coal", they were just running much too lean when the computer suspected an emission test. Back wheels not turning, steering unused also, yes, that makes sense. But what about testing for torque and kw on a rolling road? What can the ECU see, that tells it 'Hah: this here test isn't emissions, this is performance measurement, let's open all the taps!' ? Puzzled.

HumbleMechanic Fair enough, sir, but I'm looking to replace my daily commuter and I'm secretly hoping this would drop the price of 2nd hand VW TDIs. Do you think there's a good chance of that?
@mrcraigz88
@mrcraigz88 9 лет назад
+Daniel van Slooten They use a rolling road to test emissions I'm pretty sure. But they also have a scan tool plugged in during the test. As where a For fun rolling road/dyno test you wouldn't. Strap down, hit the gas, Wait for results. Unless your developing tuning software for the car but your gonna see that its running lean and change it any how. The car knows that a scan device is plugged in the same way your PC knows a usb device is plugged in is what I'm rambling on about.
@d33b33
@d33b33 9 лет назад
Mobius Yeah, that's gotta be the missing link here: any stuff plugged into the OBD etc takes precedence over the secret low emissions routine, because for emissions, you stick a sensor in the tailpipe and that's it. So clever...
@anti0918
@anti0918 9 лет назад
Good on VW for trying to stick it to the EPA. If profit margins are getting tighter, look only to government regulation for blame. You talk about VW "trying to make a buck", but what about all the crony politicians and unelected officials with their own corporate interests, who are writing these emissions standards? How many of them were short-selling VW stock right before this news broke? (since insider trading is legal only for politicians) Nobody died as a result of this, but VW is facing 20x the fines that GM got for killing 174 people through their negligence (faulty ignition).

+anti0918 I mean do you believe that average global temperatures are rising at an abnormal rate?
@anti0918
@anti0918 9 лет назад
+TheFlamingChalupa What is your basis for determining what is normal vs abnormal? Given that we've been coming out of a Little Ice Age over the last couple centuries, isn't some warming to be expected? And given that life has thrived (far more than it does today) for millions of years in the past when the temperature was many degrees warmer, wouldn't it be a good thing for the average temperature to rise, making more land accessible for agriculture and other human endeavors? But ignoring all that, and just looking at a graph of NOAA's satellite surface temperature measurements, global temperature has been practically flat for the last 2 decades. Keep in mind the uncertainty bars in this graph: www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/service/global/global-land-ocean-mntp-anom/201301-201312.png

I think VW just screwed itself out of a whole bunch of customer loyalty, and thus potentially millions of future sales, because the people who currently own VW cars just saw their car's value cut in half. Even the non-TDI cars' values have dropped. Why would anyone buy *any* VW now -- if they lied about the TDI vehicles, who's to say they didn't lie about all their other vehicles, too? The market for VWs just dropped through the floor, and that's got to piss off a *lot* of current VW owners.
@gglovato
@gglovato 9 лет назад
+LMacNeill i would keep buying VW and only TDIs, i never cared about resale value, i buy cars for using not for speculating like a stock broker. I also never cared about "clean diesel" always felt it's a shit technology, i want dirty diesel(which means, high mileage, high performance and lower maintenance), all "clean diesel" does is turn an engine(diesel) which is by nature extremely reliable and long-lasting into a piece of shit that has very expensive filters(consumables essentially) and ancilliary parts(regen cycle hurts the turbo and your mileage, adblue hurts your wallet)

+zon tarr He's stupid for telling the truth? A friend of mine was a long haul trucker, he truck burned off more fuel during regen than he used on trips. The system also failed at random, leaving him trapped in places like Iowa...... Getting a rig towed back to a shot 100 miles was not inexpensive. This is what VW was trying to avoid. If you actually try to meet the posted emissions standards, you would end up with a considerable less efficient, more problematic vehicle. Granted, this was not the way to do it.

"Volkswagen tried to pull one over on us." Yes. Volkswagen, and every other vehicle manufacturer for the last 40+ years, at least. No one seems to want to talk about it, but EVERY vehicle manufacturer is guilty of trying to skirt emissions standards. Every single vehicle manufacturer is guilty of some sort of Consumer Deceit. The sad thing here is that VW is catching shit for doing it. Who else brought us a 50+MPG non-hybrid car that's actually enjoyable, usable and can be driven like a normal car? Anyone? Huh...

great time to buya vw on the cheap- unless the government forces you to get the car updated to meet emission standards, because they're gonna be gutless junk then. it may sound very selfish, but since they're good in fuel and they're pretty powerful, I really don't care about the emissions. every day I see pickups huffing black smoke into the air and so far they are getting away with that... the vw can't be that dirty....
@MrMistery101
@MrMistery101 9 лет назад
+Krankie V Pretty much this, although standards are different for trucks than they are for passats and jettas. Also, most trucks have to be modified for them to 'roll coal' and it's worth noting that soot, although visibly impressive, is not the issue. I do agree on the intention to acquire one. I want myself a TDI with a manual for daily. They really are well built vehicles.

In addition, I'm glad the companies are lying. I don't care about a dishonest company if they make a powerful car to avoid government eco nonsense. If the firms were honest, the cars would have no power in order to meet emissions bs.

I'm not even mad at VW. Chrysler is dangerous with their recalls, but DieselGate doesn't affect the consumer in any way. If anything, it allows you to pass emissions and drive a more powerful fuel efficient car as a result. Still cheating? Yes. Would it bother me if my car did that? No.

lol more than a little, significantly less power and fuel economy. if it was only a little change then they wouldnt have risked the cheat to offer the best product. the whole thing is a scam by the us government, emmision tests are useless when the only vehicles which pollute significantly are exempt from testing and the only vehicles which are fuel efficient are banned from us sale, but go ahead and buy muscle cars and trucks with 15mpg because thats great for the environment

I hate to break it to you folks, but EVERY vehicle manufacture since electronic controls has "gamed" the EPA tests. GM got hammered for this very thing in the early '90s with the old 4.9 V8, and the Northstar engines. They would run through the EPA drive cycle without a problem, but would exceed standards when driven outside of the EPA test.

Remember the Volkswagen Diesel Rabbit and the Rabbit Truck??? They were badazz! You could drive all over on just a few drops of fuel: 45-54 MPG!!!! That was back in the 1970s!!! They kicked azz!! Toyota even made a few diesel trucks back in the earliy '70s (they are extremely rare in USA). Today, Ford makes a European Diesel Focus that claims to get 80MPG!!!! Yeah, right, probably more like high 50s or low 60s. Got to love the high gas mileage cars! I got a Geo Metro that gets no less than 36MPG around town... and it is 24 years old! If Most Americans would drive a high gas mileage car (or motorcycle), we wouldn't need to import as much oil for cars. It's really simple. Unless you work construction or are a farmer, you don't need a gas guzzling 6000Lb. truck to drive around. If you have to have a Dodge Hemi Challenger: enjoy it while it lasts. Gas/Deisel is going to go to $20 gallon in our lifetime (before 2050). It's just a fact, gas is running out.
@jotuwe6091

StyleGT Yeah, see how much more fuel efficient diesels are! There is more HCs or Carbon atoms per unit of diesel fuel than gasoline. "Just add oxygen" = power. My buddy has a diesel RV and tows a boat with it.... and he said he got 25 MPG!! That is why Mercedes Benz sold so many of those diesels in the '70s... Yeah, if your lifestyle requires a truck... you got to have it. Would be cool to top it off with a mini-truck or a micro-car to use for daily driving: best of both worlds.

Jo TUWE There are Federal (DOT), state, county and local taxes on every gallon of gas. Even propane is taxed differently (if you put it in a car versus in a barbeque/heater....). That's what pays for our roads, snow plows, bridges.... That creates a lot of jobs too! You can't totally bag on gasoline taxes.... somebody has to pay for the roads, Highway Patrol, etc. But I'm with you: if they don't spend it, they don't have to rip it out of your wallet. Shizz, cut the military budget first! What do they need +$1 Trillion a year for??? $900 of boots and uniforms (per soldier), $2700 for a bullet proof vest!, Gold plated bullets, a F-35 that can't fly or shoot.... Where did the WMDs ever go?

@jotuwe6091 9 лет назад

Honestly, me being a German Engineer, I'm more than a bit upset about VW...they've been pulling trademarks like engineered or even made in Germany through the dirt and afterwards put a cherry on top. I feel deeply sorry for (most) of the employees, but I'd much prefer that this company meets it's demise sooner or later. I visited the IAA just a few days ago, and it blows my mind how they show brand new engines there, celebrating that the timing belt is back because they are to stupid to integrate timing chains without them breaking. The Lie about emissions is another epic failure, alongside many others. It's so sad to think about the fact that even their german supplier Bosch (who makes some amazingly good parts, my whole injection and engine control system in my Honda Civic 2.2 Diesel is from Bosch) clearly made VW aware of the fact that this Firmware for the Computer is not for legal road use, and yet they still used it. This is stupid, ignorant and evil and the same time. But I mean, hearing you guys over in the states, the reputation of German vehicles has gone to crud already anyway, because that VW stuff breaks way to early anyway and repair costs are horrific. BMW is not really doing any better lately I feel. Mercedes though looked really good, at least at the IAA, at least they really try to live up to their "premium" reputation (and prices obviously). Every manufacturer has it's weaknesses, including the Japanese. But VW nailed it. Big Time.

The first auto scandal in my memory is that of the Corvair--"Unsafe At Any Speed." I owned a 1960 Chevrolet Corvair, and I can confirm that it was an unsafe vehicle that should never have been produced. Many people died as a result of accidents involving Corvairs. When it comes to a choice of public safety or higher profits, auto manufacturers have proven again and again that they'll opt for the profits. And it's not just the auto industry, but businesses in general, usually the very large businesses. I did own an early diesel auto, a 1963 Mercedes 190D. A long-lived vehicle, to be sure, but not fast enough to get out of its own way. It did not have spark plugs, but it did have glow plugs, which required a hefty generator (pre-alternator) and a very large battery. And once again, the car was incredibly slow. To this day I have no interest in owning another diesel vehicle.

The problem with diesel engines producing too much NOx is especially that diesel engines are designed to burn lean, i.e. have an excess of oxygen in the combustion, which petrol/gasoline engines do (in general) not have. This means that, combined with the high temperature and pressure within the combustion chamber, nitrogen is also oxidized and exhausted as NOx.

the comment that I have is I own a 2005 chevy silverado 3500 dually. it is equipped with a 6.6l duramax diesel engine 5 speed allison and 3.73 gears. the truck is about 9000 lbs curb weight and with very little work, mainly just optimization of the software, my truck gets almost 30 mpg. that is not towing or hauling, and passes vet testing every year. the truck does not smoke or any of that jazz that the kids love to do. the modifications are larger exhaust, free flowing muffler and intake and a different compressor wheel on the turbo charger. that is the biggest reason for me to to own my diesel engine

I was hoping you did video on this topic and boom here it is. Great video Eric! I really don't trust car companies anymore. What kills me the most is them lying repeatedly about mpg. I have bought two new suvs in the past 4 years and both are Japanese. They both have flat our lied about their estimated miles per gallon. One being a Nissan I bought last year claimed the mileage was 26 city and 33 hwy. I drive mostly on highway, no traffic just cruising and some city. I have yet to get anywhere close to 26. The best I have seen is 24.1- 24.8. This is absolutely ridiculous. I thought maybe I am stepping on the gas too much and I decided to drive real carefully for about 5 months and I did not see a difference. I do not know what to do about this. They say one thing at the dealership and you bring it out and its totally different. I made the purchase solely on the mileage performance since all other factors were the same. Can't believe these companies with all their lying commercials.

This brings to mind several past scandals in the auto industry, each one ended up with new restrictions and eventually better cars. The Chevrolet "Sock" in the valve cover scandal with their inline six in the early 50's. followed by the GM engine mount scandal in the 60's, the Pinto Scandal for Ford, followed by a transmission scandal. Foreign cars were not immune to scandals. Both Audi and Toyota had runaway engine, "Unintended and unstoppable acceleration," problems with their first fly by wire throttle control systems. Plus there were the ancillary problems from some equipment supplied by other manufacturers, Takata airbags and Firestone tire defects that go across several car makers, but seem to hit one or more makers especially hard. Then there were some cars that were intrinsically unsafe for drivers, passengers and pedestrians built by all manufacturers in the mid sixties. Even tiny AMC notedf for safe fuel efficient reliable vehicles, was not immune, in the AMC Marlin with a blind spot that you could not get around and a rear window that driver could only see the sky in his rear view mirror. This was Little AMC who used dual master cylinders in their cars as standard equipment starting in 1960, who in 1963 made seat belts standard issue in all its cars. Only a few specialty cars did that before then. I think seat belts were standard in the Tucker, all 50 of them.

My understanding of the technical details is that there is both a program and a device involved. The device releases urea into the exhaust, and the urea reacts with the NOx and some oxygen and is converted to a mixture of nitrogen and water vapor. The problem is that the use of this device can lower performance and fuel economy, so the program detects when the car is under test conditions, and only switches it on at that time.

My last two vehicles have been VW TDI's. I owned a 2001 Jetta TDI with the ALH engine. I currently own a 2015 Passat TDI. When I got my Passat in January of this year, my Jetta had 384,000+ miles on it. The only major repair was replacing the 5 speed transmission at 300,000 miles. Other than that, it was probably the most reliable vehicle I ever owned. My only problem with that vehicle was the almost zero leg room in the back seat. So, I purchased the Passat not only for the almost limo like leg room in the back, but because it was a "clean diesel" vehicle so I wouldn't be polluting the atmosphere. Where I live, there is no emission testing for diesel vehicles, but I was flabbergasted when I found out that VW had the computer programmed to basically shut off all emissions when it was not hooked up to a testing machine. So, I'm very worried that once the "fix" comes into play, my MPG's will drop significantly, the performance will be horrible, and if I should decide to sell my car, the resale value will have taken a huge hit. Not sure how I will be compensated for this, but whatever it is, my faith in VW has seriously been shaken, and although I love the simplicity of a diesel vehicle, I may look towards another alternate fuel vehicle, namely all electric.....

Good point! However, in a Diesel engine you do not compress the mixture, you just compress air. When piston is at max up( or very close) and you have max pressure and temperature, the injector will spray a fine mist of diesel fuel which will self ignite. You have a mixture when you talk about gasoline! Keep it up! Ps: I have a 2.0 tdi from VW and after the update the engine is strange and seems powerless. 🦾

Doesn't change the quality of the vehicle, and if being lied to by a large corporation (or just a person for that matter) is shocking to you boy the world is going eat you and shit you right the fuck out in the same day. Corporations skirting laws that directly affect their bottom line is not a new concept, it happens all the time in every industry, and will continue to happen. They don't need your trust to operate, because unfortunately you NEED a car, whether you trust the automaker or not. Automaker goes broke, no matter they will get bailed out, it's already happened.

Although I don't like the idea of car manufacturers not building cars that conform to our standards, I genuinely feel like Volkswagen probably did everything they could. The emissions standards in the United States are more stringent than in any other place on Earth as far as I know. In my mind, Volkswagen wanted to give us a vehicle that performs well, but they probably couldn't give us the desired performance and meet our stringent emissions standards at the same time. So, instead of giving us a gutless turd that meets emissions standards, they gave us a good performing vehicle that can fudge the test. That's how I see it.

What most people are missing is that the emission standards effect performance. Although I cannot comment on the American emission standards, from what I've seen in the European commercial vehicle sector where a 2006 (Euro 4) truck may have the 'same' engine and power output as a 2015 (Euro 6) model but the spread of power is narrower, responsiveness is slower, fuel economy is effected and they have become more difficult to drive efficiently hence automatics are becoming increasingly more common. Current engine technology isn't at the point where you can have your cake and eat it, so you have to make a choice.. You could have a very clean engine that is slow, not responsive and not very good on fuel. Therefore not desirable from a drivers point of view. Or have an engine that is slightly 'dirtier' but has better responsiveness, better spread of power and better fuel economy which are all traits that drivers want. VW went with the latter and fitted a 'device' that reduced emissions to pass the test and give drivers what they want. That's not to say that vw are making engines that are dirty and harmful to the environment but more than likely using their 'device' to make up a small difference. Vw where wrong to cheat the system as doing so slows the development of new clean engine technology which will counter the problems I've mentioned. As always the media have blown everything out of proportion because in reality the end user has not had a poor quality product, it's not costing them any money, no one has been hurt and if no one found the 'device' or whatever everyone would none the wiser and really it isn't something the end user should be concerned about.

Bring forth the Tesla model 3. An affordable electric car. I believe $35,000 before incentives. I think $30,000 after incentives. Affordable and a decent range of 200 + miles that will only get better with newer technology every year. I know that most electric cars suck, but an affordable one that is well built will sell itself. Yeah you still burn fossil fuels to generate the electricity to charge it, but its much more efficient to send electricity through wires than to pump crude out of the ground (power use), distill it in a distillation tower (power use), truck it to a fuel farm for storage (power use), re-truck it to the gas stations (power use), pump it back out of the under ground tanks into automobiles (power use), all to finally burn it in your very own ICE engine in your own car! This doesn't include time out of your life to fuel up, go in for oil changes, tune ups, repairs, etc. It also doesn't include all the petroleum products that EACH gasoline or diesel engine powered vehicle requires like engine oil, transmission oil, differential oil, etc. As a planet, we have all become comfortable with how things are. That's why it hard to get folks to think outside of the box with electric cars. It would be great to "fill up" at home. Your power bill would obviously go up. That's obvious. You would first have to educate people that electricity DOES'T COME FROM THE WALL!

My opinion on the matter is: The only vehicles that these emissions standards apply to are consumer cars. Trucks over 1/2 Ton (The majority of trucks on the road) are not tested, and do not need to meet these guidelines. They also do not advertise things like fuel mileage. Overall, the small percentage of diesel vehicles on the road that are actually affected by the nox regulations make no significant impact on the world, thus this is all just a really poor shot at a company who is apparently doing the same things everyone else is, they just happened to get caught first. I don't think it is right, but I do think they are doing what they feel thy need to do in order to keep selling cars.

Hi Eric I was a auto body technician and I just saw your video on diesel gate aren't ETCG1 as has been proven in history with automobiles last time we had a big change without cars there were carbureted, and then they came up with injection systems injection systems were for the most part cleaner. Had a more precise burn take worked a little better ect. But as you know they had no power. And if you wanted to modifier car you couldn't do that. In the main reasons why they did that is they didn't have a full understanding of. injection systems at that point. Injection systems were fairly new no new had a play with. Nowadays you can get out of the stock computer onto car. 200 two 300 and sometimes even more than that on a car just by doing computer tuning. Now there's a lot of people who have a lot opinions about what a car canning can't do. But look up car in computer training earn the Internet and you'll see people getting massive numbers of course power just out of doing computer training. That was impossible in the early days of injections. And you'd boy year warranty. Still willing to avoid your warranty by computer training but that's for other reasons. As it stands right now or in the precipice of the change in cars we're looking at have you in feel sell cars Electric cars cars that run aren't completely different fuels. Everything's changing with cars Carter getting way more advanced than they ever have been. The point I'm trying to make care cars will change we're knocking to lose them at least just yet. But tell me what you think.

The problem is the laws of physics ;-) - Since the early 90s at least, we've been hearing from automakers that they want to make the "3-liter-car" (so it uses only 3L/100km, which equals about 78mpg, according to some online calculator). But that just wasn't possible! The only vehicle that came close were the MK2 Golfs used by the German post delivery services, they had no back seat bench and were built without any extras, so extra light, and had a 1.2L (I think) diesel engine, that, on the highway at around 90-100km/h used only about 3.5L/100km. But it wasn't practical for normal cars. So they thought: "Well, if the laws of physics won't abide to what we want, we'll have to make some law that does what we want." And so the NEDC was born (New European Drive Cycle). The automakers are allowed to perform those tests themselves. They disconnect everything but the transmission from the engine, so no alternator, no AC, nothing. And then they drive, never giving it full throttle, going through this specially designed drive cycle, and *every* car comes out of it with something around 2L/100km *less* than in real all-day use. Some more, some less. And with hybrids, it's even better: Let's say the overall distance of a NEDC test is 50km. Let's say, the hybrid runs 40km on battery until it needs the gas engine. So they "test" it, and as a result, the thing uses something like 0.7L/100km in the drive cycle, so that's what they advertize! And this could even be a fat 2-ton SUV, they don't care, they'll advertize this crazy number anyways, and everyone knows it's a big fat lie, but nobody can do anything about it!

It was interesting that VW set aside $7.3 billion rather than the roughly $18 billion EPA could fine them (482,000 cars x $37,500 = $18,075,000,000). I guess they're either bargaining in the media, or that $7.3 billion just represents approximate costs of fixing the affected vehicles themselves. That EPA fine doesn't even take into account what the European fines might be. Today VW stock has fallen another 7%, adding up to a net loss of 30% over the last week, or $28 billion. A European "brand" expert also mentioned that the VW brand itself has lost about $10 billion due to this scandal. The news will likely get worse before it gets better, so the question is, why would VW put its existence on the line over this scheme? The risk was way beyond what any rational person would find acceptable, even if you can get past the moral implications.

I work as a technician in a dealership in ireland. I would say roughly 95% of the cars sold from this dealership are diesel. It's mainly due to the cost of fuel here. I mean petrol currently is about €1.45 PER LITRE, diesel about €1.25 per litre. Cost of fuel is a joke. But you just can't get people out of diesels. Eventually though with all the emmissions crap going onto to diesels now it won't be long before they are phased out. I mean there's only so much you can do to lower diesel emissions..

Eric thank you for posting this I have been waiting for something to come up from you regarding this. I bought my first ever new car in May 2014 which is a 2014 Passat 2.0 TDI I feel very disappointed with a big company like VW, this is now my 4th Passat that I have owned . What disappoints me the most is that I chose the 2.0 litter engine for both performance, MPG and the fact that our (UK) road tax is £30 a year. To put this into perspective my 2000 1.4 Honda Civic is £140 per year my 1986 Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6 is £230. So buying the Passat for its £30 per year road tax was a big influence for me buying it. The other thing that is concerning me about this is that if my car is affected (very likely) then they could reduce the performance to bring the emissions down. I guess I will have to wait and see what will happen. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic. As always great videos. Steve.

This is a pretty serious situation and I think the uncertainty over what is going to happen is freaking out VW customers more than anything. Unfortunately VW is going to have to pay for what they did. Further, their reputation is bad enough in the US for a variety of reasons and this will only make it worse. I've had the same feeling you expressed in this video, just wondering what the heck is going on with the auto industry lately. I also share your fear that we are going to see some major changes that wipe out many of the cars we know and love. This does feel like a golden age of performance vehicles much as the 1960s/early 1970s vehicles were before the oil embargo and new emissions standards kicked in and essentially killed off big V8s and the like. I'm very worried about what is going to happen with these upcoming changes and it makes me want to go out and buy a stock of new 5.0 Mustangs to keep preserved...I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I want to see the ICE move towards a camless design. It seems like the only visible way aside from further complicating the camshaft to be more and more 'dynamic' and variable is to simply go with no camshaft. Free Valve technology makes a traditional camshaft seem parasitic to the engine's performance. Koenigsegg apparently has a camless engine in plan/works.

The VW Diesel effect was discovered as part of a project by a university here in the US. They did some real world (meaning they collected emission samples from vehicles while they were being driven) and things just did nor add up. They did not have a great number of cars to test but one, a BMW X5 passed the on the road testing without cheating. About cheating on emissions. Individual mechanics have been doing it for years. Plugging vacuum lines with ball bearings, hollowing out cat converters, setting ignition timing, idle mixture, idle speed out of spec, EGR block off plates (and we complain about no longer being able to adjust these settings). Perhaps the cheating from mechanics was an attempt to at least make a car made undriveable due to horrible emissions gear (no reason to hog out a cat converter) but it still was cheating,and against the law. Could VW have made powerful clean burning diesel engines and not cheat on the testing,well BMW did it. Sounds like a small group (under 50 I suspect) of management and technical people looking for the easy way. We have seen big horsepower numbers,good fuel economy,low emissions with gasoline engines, it can be done with the diesel. Our EPA here did some calculations and concluded that this cheating could be the cause of 59 deaths (this is a theory) due to respiratory conditions aggravated by these extra emissions, this cheating was not a victimless crime.

The primary way to deal with environmental issues is compensating for them. You can mitigate where possible, sure, but not to the detriment of progress. It's a strange case of an ounce of cure is worth a pound of prevention. So when VW says it's breaking emissions laws, my response is "so what?"

A great video sir, I loved mature and responsible tone to it, instead of the easy route of just blaming VW.

I just purchased a TDI about six months ago. It's an impressive car in performance and fuel economy. My opinion is that diesel cannot be economically fitted to work in a small platform like a compact car. It creates an engineering bind and is subject to compromises. In this case, they "cheated". I think this is simply one more step towards the end of the internal combustion engine and burning hydrocarbons in general.

It's been published that the VW diesel emission issue was found over a year ago. Some students were doing tests & couldn't get constant results so dug deeper. Also it's been reported in the Uk they did it to save £200-500 on each car. If they had fitted DEF/Adblue exhaust treatment system to the car then it would of been 'safe'. In the uk press it's also been report that Bosch who supply VW said that the illegal system was only for test & not to be used on production cars. I don't know it's 100% as its only reported & not confirmed

Look at the VW 1.8T petrol engine introduced in 2014: Flat torque curve (184 ft-lbs from 1500 to 4750 rpm), very good power and excellent economy. My hwy mpg has hit 40+ and all around is about 34 on regular gas. When I use the turbo too much I drop to 30 mpg, and best of all I have a manual transmission. I think that this low end torque 1.8T is very superior to those standard engines that don't hit peak torque without revving way up.

I know it sounds weird but maybe they were thinking of when you come to a stop. like you said, computer knows when the wheels are not moving and the wheel is not turning so lower emissions. I think there is a place for that because in busy cities where traffic piles up it would be great to have a system to reduce emissions while idle.

Another reason why Ford, GM, etc, etc, etc, should of never been bailed out in the first place. These car companies will eventually die and other more robust more forward thinking car companies will replace them. This would of happened back in 2008 but that was delayed because these corporations have their hands in the pockets of countless politicians. A great example of this is Tesla. Look at all the regulations they've put against Tesla. Instead of being able to buy your Tesla anywhere in the world, however you want, with whatever additions you want on the car, you now have to go through approved channels. Wait times can be ridiculous and you can end up paying more than you really have to. Meaning if the car is 43k you end up paying 44k or 45k because car dealerships are bullshit. On top of that not only has Elon Musk realized that not everyone can afford a 60 - 90k fully electric car but has made steps for making them lighter, improving battery technology, and finding a solution for not only charging your electric car faster but without causing permanent damage to the battery itself. And guess what, even though they don't have the same aesthetics of a combustion engine they can be incredibly fast. For example the P85D.

Very surprising to know that Diesel Cars amount to less than one percent. Here in India, Hatchbacks are mostly powered by the FIAT 1.3 JTD engines in their FGT and VGT avatars and the VW 1.5 TDI. What is your opinion about Cars running on CNG? Feasible in the US?
