Monounsaturated Fats: Oleic Acid - Omega 9- These Protect Cell Membranes from Free Radicals. Oleic acid replaces other omega fatty acids in cell membranes. Since oleic acid is less susceptible to oxidation damage than omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, replacing these fatty acids with oleic acid protects your cell membranes from free radicals and other oxidative stressors (1)
Palmitoleic Acid - Omega 7- These Reduce Insulin Resistance. Omega-7 protects the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas from glucose-induced toxicity - enhances proliferation of pancreatic beta cells, helping your body optimize blood sugar control with its own natural insulin (2)
Reduce Inflammation- Study from the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute in Ohio conducted the first randomized, controlled trial in humans of supplementation with purified omega-7. Subjects were randomly assigned to receive either an omega-7 supplement providing 220 mg palmitoleic acid or a placebo - capsules were taken once daily, with a meal, and blood testing was done at the beginning of the study and again after 30 days. At 30 days, the supplemented group showed a significant mean lowering in C-reactive protein with a 44% reduction compared with the control group. Omega-7-supplemented subjects also had 15% reductions in triglyceride levels (3)
Polyunsaturated Fats: Omega 3 & 6- Omega 3’s- Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA): This 20-carbon fatty acid's main function is to produce chemicals called eicosanoids, which help reduce inflammation. EPA also helps reduce symptoms of depression. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA): A 22-carbon fatty acid, DHA makes up about 8% of brain weight and is extremely important for normal brain development and function. EPA and DHA support cellular membranes and keep them flexible - maintaining the fluidity of the cell membranes allows for proper communication between nerve cells and, therefore, helps to support focus and mental clarity. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA): This 18-carbon fatty acid can be converted into EPA and DHA, although the process is not very efficient. ALA is mainly used by the body for energy (4)
Omega 6’s: The most common omega-6 fat is linoleic acid, which can be converted into longer omega-6 fats such as arachidonic acid (ARA) Like EPA, ARA is used to produce eicosanoids - however, the eicosanoids produced by ARA are more pro-inflammatory. Pro-inflammatory eicosanoids are important chemicals in the immune system, but when too many of them are produced, they can increase inflammation - modern Western diet contains far more omega-6 fatty acids than necessary (4)
Trans Fats: Trans fats block the production of Type 1 and 3 prostaglandins (PGs), which are derived from the omega 6 and omega 3 fats, respectfully. Type 1 and 3 PGs help you fight inflammation and benefit your hormonal and nervous system (5)
Saturated Fats: Studies in favor of saturated fats- A meta-analysis study, published 2010, which pooled data from 21 studies and included nearly 348,000 adults, found no difference in the risks of heart disease and stroke between people with the lowest and highest intakes of saturated fat (6) A Japanese prospective study that followed 58,000 men for an average of 14 years found no association between saturated fat intake and heart disease, and an inverse association between saturated fat and stroke (i.e. those who ate more saturated fat had a lower risk of stroke) (7)

josm248 josm248 There’s already such a genuinely vast array of readily available content full of information that lists specific omega - 3 & omega - 6 dense foods, and that’s just on RU-vid, let alone their owners (Google). Sure, people definitely neglect omega - 7 & 9 or are genuinely unaware of their presence, however there’s still adequate info detailing the specific food groups containing said omega’s, and that’s just on RU-vid, let alone their owne haha wait I already said that.

Thomas DeLauer - Of course, another excellent video! You already did one on Conjugated Linolenic Acid (CLA). It too is an Omega-7 fatty as is Vaccenic Acid, i.e., (E)-octadec-11-enoic acid. You referenced it as CLA, a trans-fatty acid found in the fat of ruminants and in dairy products such as milk, butter, and yogurt. You also reminded us that it is the main fatty acid comprising trans-fat in human milk. Keep up the great work! You should have 20X's the hits.

Love your videos and the information you are sharing. One aspect that I need more clarification on is what are examples of the foods to eat or not eat. Specific foods to make it easier to for us watching to incorporate or not into our menus. Naming the specific fats is great but it doesn't give a clear example of the foods that contain them.

The American Heart Association made a Presidential level advisory to the public health community about fats on June 15, 2017 by Frank M. Sacks, MD, FAHA, Chair. The results are inline with what Thomas DeLauer has said, though the study was limited in scope. It even recommends a diet very similar to Keto or Atkins, namely the Mediterranean Diet. It proves the link between proper fat consumption, and low carbs, and the positive effect on the heart, especially in patients who have already had a heart attack. Me and my wife have been following Thomas and his team's videos starting this year and have lost 105 pounds (combined) and 23 inches from our waists (combined), since February 2017. Keep up the amazing scientific work, and thank you for backing up the videos with peer-reviewed scholarly articles and journals, I usually fly my geek flag by reading them after the video. :)

Curious about finding balance as a 50 year old male. 200lb, 5'10. Symptoms and signs of insulin resistance. But... also having gallbladder symptoms... not enough for surgery but debilitating. So, I need a balance. I will consult my doc and hopefully a nutrition specialist referral, but curious about the science so I'm educated when I talk with them

crfogal67 - I am 51 and 5' 10" as well. Worked a desk job for a lot of years and ate very poorly. My weight went anywhere between 190 lbs up to 220 lbs. I had insulin resistance and zero energy. I don't think I have ever had gall bladder issues. Anyway, the ketogenic diet has been a lifesaver for me. I'm no longer insulin resistant and my weight/bmi is now within the normal range. Not only that but it has restored my testosterone levels and my body feels better than it has since my late 20s. I can only encourage you to dive in.

Love your channel, Thomas. This recommended ratio of fat types is really useful! One thing is a little confusing to me, though: Omega-3 is "good" and Omega-6 is "bad", but are both part of the 30-40% polyunsaturated recommendation. If I was currently consuming 60% monounsaturated, 30% polyunsaturated (all Omega-3) and 10% saturated, would you suggest that I decrease mono and increase Omega-6 to fit your 40:35:25 ratio or am I already doing better than the recommendation? Seems wrong to increase Omega-6 to hit the ratio you mentioned. It would be awesome to see a range (min/max/ideal) for each element (EPA, DHA, ALA, Omega-7, 9, etc.) and then we can figure out the mono, poly, etc.

Until the carbs have been used up by your body as energy. You should be able to tell. It also depends on your digestive system. If a slow digestive system, it could take hours, depending on the amount of carbs you've consumed.

I’ve just started Keto, but one thing I’m struggling to figure out is what ratios of fats I should be looking at. I am currently aiming for 65% fats, but within that, what ratios should be saturated, mono or polyunsaturated? I don’t want to blindly jam dairy in my face, but I do want to use cream, cheese blue top milk etc. Without knowing the kind of ratios to look at I’m a little lost and not quite sure I’m making the right choices all of the time. However, I am losing weight so something is going right.

You should make these more understandable to regular people, I have to watch like three videos before I can know what you talking about, I think, idk..

That was a lot of information about fats and all...but what do I do with all that info? More animal fat, less? More fish, not too much? Is there some kind of ratio that we should consider?

Never heard of Omega-7...what are the best sources?

It may even sound like omega nine consumption over threes and sixes is similar to how carbs are preferably supposed to be consumed over fats to whatever exact degree. I was also wondering if monounsaturated fats tend to give you at least something of the best worlds from the other too. Interesting video.

Does it matter where sat fat comes from? Since the bulk of sat fat comes from animal products, is it safe to say that eating meat and such high in sat fat is good for you?

I feel like you were too critical of Omega 6. You’ve said inflammation isn’t always necessarily bad, and I’ve heard omega 6 are essential fatty acids. What function do they serve health-wise for the better, and in what proportion or amount are they healthiest? How do we keep omega 3 from going bad?
