I loved Hitomis content until I noticed some of the "self love" double speak, the new age spiritualism purity culture, and the borderline ED language. It started to remind me of my time in a yoga community where people went on raw vegan diets and fasts that they thought would "cleanse" them and ended up getting ill. Now I can't unsee it and I sadly haven't watched her content since.

She frequently calls attention to making sure you’re not beating yourself up over junk food, and about the pressure of body image etc. what did you watch one video? Then take it out of context. Cause a message of purity is the exact opposite of her messaging.

i truly love hitomi's content and the vulnerability, light, and spirtual insights that she shares. her journey is personally very inspiring for me + resonates with much of what life and love are teaching me. however, i'm really glad to see that you reviewed this video because when i watched when she uploaded it, i felt troubled because i sensed it was coming from a restrictive place and i felt like it could be potentially triggering and was even a bit triggering for me probably because as you mentioned, diet culture can be extremely sneaky. i think your video captures why. your videos have helped me so much and anytime where i'm beating myself up about eating an extra snack before bed or whatever it may be, i always think "abby would encourage this" so thank you so much!

Abby doesn’t have “great education “skills. This is basically grasping to make content . As a person who had a candida overgrowth, you DO NOT EAT ANY SUGAR. You just go backwards . And the fact that Hitomi mentioned that , “luckily it didn’t affect her body and the way she felt “. That is absolute truth. To say a “health care person will help you “ by giving you an anti fungal ,works , temporarily, and is also not great for you. You cannot get your body let all those great probiotics work.. if you keep pounding sugar. I had a Dr. ,NOT believe me, that I knew a I had a candida overgrowth, and said he would humor me . He gave me a super large dosage to follow, of caprylic acid and told me to just eat healthy food like his grandma (1920s ) would have made , do not try and stop the occasional cake or ice cream ect. I had a die off of candida so bad , it put me in the hospital. Yeah… don’t trust Dr.s for anything other than to save my life in an emergency. Needless to say, he was surprised , that I knew what I was talking about , and apologized . If y’all wanna follow some real people that know what they are doing , follow Markus Rothkrantz, and Kara Brotman.. And to be honest all y’all bashing Hitomi for her “speak” and words she uses , You never get rid of eating disorders , like alcoholism. You just don’t do it , you use psychology to help you. She is telling you all how she has over come her issues , by not feeling guilty, and being positive “NOW” about her body. This girl tells you, you need not refrain from anything that feels good. And I’m saying THAT is wrong. Our diet nowadays is SAD. She is craving sugar abnormally , because when you have a candida overgrowth , it’s like alcoholism , you crave it . Should you give in because you shouldn’t restrict yourself? This is coming from someone who has experienced all of this. I have NOT had an eating disorder .

So glad you finally covered her! She's been spreading harmful pseudoscience for years. I was a fan since 2017 but stopped watching in 2021. Whilst I already suffered from disordered eating, her videos were a main influence during my awful teenage ortherexia. She really damaged my idea of health and balance, and influenced my young teen self to drink diatomaceous earth daily for months. Her older videos are much worse, and credit to her for improving the message she puts out, but those videos are still up. It's hard to believe she is totally unaware of the problems of some of her content, as she self identifies as having disordered eating. I don't think she's a bad person with bad intentions at all, but get a big off feeling from her channel. Overall, her angle and tone as an older sister/guidance/role model is problematic given some of the content. I hope she continues to grow and improve her content and food relationship

I think it's a great eye-opener for young people who watch these 'influencers' and take their nutrition and wellness advice as gospel, and become disciples who follow the advice to a T. We all need to remember that A.) influencer/celebrity lifestyle choices aren't inherently virtuous and something to be emulated purely because its coming from an influencer/celebrity, and B.) nutrition and wellness (obviously notwithstanding universal laws) is incredibly context-dependent and varying for each individual. It's often a case of trial-and-error. This is why all these 'advice' channels for young people that, as you say try to take-up the mantle of the "big sister", should be taken with a pinch of salt. That's not to say we can't gain value from them, but at the end of the day, they're also just a person, they also make mistakes, and their advice isn't infallible. Oftentimes the most glaring example of this are the social-media influencers who push the Vegan nutrition and wellness lifestyle / angle. It can be almost cult-like in its preachiness and dogma, and can sometimes stem from a place of holier-than-thou moral superiority, which is quite toxic. Because the reality is, a Vegan diet simply isn't advisable or sustainable for the majority of people, especially the 'raw' type Vegan diets. They can be incredibly, even dangerously, unhealthy, and I've seen tonnes of young people - primarily women - legitimately deteriorating physically and mentally as a result of this lifestyle, but because of the dogmatic adherence to this idea of "wanting to be a good Vegan", they just continue with the diet in spite of their health issues. This is doubly problematic for young women who naturally have a higher bodyfat % than men (on average) which links to their hormonal and fertility health, and a Vegan diet isn't very conducive to maintaining this. You also cannot obtain B12 naturally as a Vegan, as well as Vitamin D being very difficult to come by - both of which are critical nutrients that many Vegans aren't aware they need to supplement.

i think finding ways to indulge is a good way to start because emotional eating is just a part of normal relationship with food! maybe instead of just eating a donut you eat it with some more filling sides to make a good snack, or just eat the donut on the side with your meal. i’m working on diversifying my diet as well, something that’s been helpful (and fun!!) for me is cooking with in season produce especially things i’ve never tried! although this involves scouring the internet for recipes sometimes 😅 you can even add stuff to your macaroni or cut up your chicken nuggets into a salad to make it a bit less scary to try new things if that’s something you struggle with like me lol. sending good and healing vibes to you ❤

Candida....yes, my old enemy! For years I battled with recurring yeast infections, I went on the candida diet which is basically meat, fish, eggs, and some veges! It was so stressful to have to eat food I dislike and deny myself what I want, that diet went out the window pretty quick! After a lot of research I found that stress plays a big part in gut health. So its pointless to address the food issue without addressing the psych somatic effects of stress on the gut. I have a nervous tummy. Stress always goes to my gut and everything just goes straight through me as a result. I found that sorting out stress, anxiety and depression went a long way towards no further yeast infection.

You don’t even know how thankful I am for this video (once again). My relationship with food has improved a lot over the past few years, thanks to the work you do on youtube especially, but diet culture can be so sneaky and is so deeply ingrained in our society, that it can be extremely difficult to decide who and what to trust and even now I still find myself doubting my food choices because of it. Now since I have come a long way in therapy as well over the past years I am really focusing on practicing self care and love these days and am therefore also unavoidably becoming very enmeshed with the wellness/spirituality community. Ironically even though it is a very warm, positive and empowering community, I have noticed how it too has impacted my relationship with food rather negatively once again. Diet culture toxicity is being hidden under a warm blanket of loving language. Only eating "clean, natural, nourishing" foods but as an act of self love, not self hate seems to be the goal. But it doesn’t change the fact that restriction is being normalized (obviously not always or by everyone, just in total) and I think Hitomi is a good example for this, as the way she talks about food is very representative of this subtle diet culture toxicity. Sure, all in all, the meals are often pretty well balanced because in the end the goal is still self care, but there is a thin line between taking care of your body by only giving it the "best, most nourishing foods" and it becoming unhealthy. I have caught myself thinking in the same way Hitomi talks about food. "Sure, I could eat this cookie because I really want it, but isn’t the best, most loving thing I could do for my body to eat some fruit instead?" No. No it isn’t. I hate diet culture so much. Thank you for everything you do Abbey and continuing to educate us ❤
@simsthre4078
@simsthre4078 Год назад
That doesn’t sound like an unhealthy thought at all. It sounds like…its okay to eat this cookie, but fruit is better for me. That’s what I would want my child to think if I had one. Maybe because I spent a lot of my life addicted to junk food and am reaching an age where my body doesn’t just ignore it. If I eat junk food, I get side effects (I’m 31) which I never did my whole life so I ate a lot of junk food. I guess my experience may be different cause I’ve gibe months surviving on crisps and chocolate before, and feeling very low energy and all kinds of terrible not realising that it’s my diet until I cleaned it up. For someone like me, that “Shall I just have some fruit instead, it’s healthier for me” is a very very good and healthy thing. “I’m so terrible for eating this cookie” is absolutely not, but recognising the difference between what’s healthy and what isn’t and nudging yourself towards health, it’s crazy how that can be turned into a “toxic” thing. I also was bulemic from a teen into my early twenties, so I feel the difference between unhealthy restriction and just…wanting to create better habits
@daniellacsordas9728
@daniellacsordas9728 Год назад
@@simsthre4078 i feel like the part about i should just have fruit instead of this cookie is still restrictive because you can have both, im bulimic myself and still struggle with binging and purging, so if i eat fruit instead of the cookie i will still end up eating the cookie and probably the whole package, might not be the case for everyone but i think its the best to allow both things in the diet and not demonise one for being „bad“ because if eaten too much fruit can be unhealthy too because it also contains sugar
@simsthre4078
@simsthre4078 Год назад
@@daniellacsordas9728 That’s an interesting take. I do remember realising that a while back then kind of forgetting, but I’d have a slice of choc cake with icecream and mandarins (really delicious combo), and I think that’s a good way to get some fruit in and get your body to crave fruit for more of those nutrients. But now, that chocolate cake comes with a bigger trade off cause the pure sugar makes me crash and I get junk food hangovers now, so it makes the unhealthiness of certain foods very tangible for me, it’s harder to rationalise it away. I think ultimately guilt is a measure that you’re taking an unhealthy view, and health and happiness are the goal ultimately, it’s a balancing act and everyones balance is different and it changes over time via our tolerance etc. But also because I’ve researched and seen what’s in a lot these foods, you can barely even call it food, and I think that’s another nuance here. It’s not just about eating FOOD that’s bad for you, that would be one thing (like home made cookies for example) but often poison (shop bought with all the chemicals etc). But it’s actually crazy how we can internalise a craving for food and feel ashamed about who we are cause we ate something. That mixed with constantly having it shoved under out nose. In the end the shame probably a worse poison than the chemicals. So I think healthy eating is only healthy eating when it’s not coning from shame. I’m kind of just hashing out my thoughts as I type so sorry it’s incoherent. But I think that’s my conclusion about it. Oh chocolate with bananas & yoghurt are another thing I do! But actually one more point, I think regarding the poison thing it’s more of a systemic problem where she shouldn’t have to worry about eating something less healthy for us, but the way things are set up we’re being tempted with all these options that cause or keep us diseased. I wouldn’t be surprised if my sugar crashing isn’t my age and is actually diabetes from the way I ate all my life.

I can relate to her sugar experience. I’m really sensitive to dried fruit (and I LOVE it!), but I don’t deny myself. I portion out a serving that my body can handle. Note: I don’t portion the rest of what I eat. This has worked for me because before I’d eat a whole box of raisins and have the biggest sugar high. I’d be bouncing off the walls!

hey, just wanted to say that sugar highs have been widely regarded as pseudoscience for anyone that doesn't have problems with blood sugar/insulin, so that might be something worth checking out if you haven't already. There is sometimes a slight boost of energy for those without those issues but if you're "sensitive" to the glucose that our bodies rely on as its primary energy source then that might be worth checking out with a doctor. hope it improves!

the one thing i wish ppl would understand is that ur kidneys and liver ARE the detox in your body. you don't need to "cleanse" or "detox". i remember watching her in my senior year of hs and seeing how good her vegan food looked. i wanted to try new things! now the very little i've watched of her now, it feels eerily familiar to my EDs: the behavior, the language and the "justification" of restrictions and allowances. it feels a bit triggering to listen to now (ive been in recovery for 4/5 years with one ED) and i hope she realizes how slippery of a slope some of these behaviors are.

@@myfunstuff6058 influencers do have some responsibility to their audience esp if giving health related advice, but some people take the first opportunity to try suddenly be like “yeah i always felt x way about her she’s this she’s that” the second they sense the wind blowing in the other direction. Like nah she’s a nice girl who minds her own business making vids on her little corner of the internet. Critique her advice sure but don’t make it a personal attack for your own gratification. Also her messaging was largely misrepresented, or the representation was imbalanced, there were fair critiques in the vid but left out all the clips where she preaches the same kind of message of letting yourself enjoy junk as this woman does. And honestly these call out vids are treading a fine line ethically, especially when it’s not someone who opted into call out culture like that. I’d love to see these kinds of videos become more collaborative, rather than I’m going to take this strangers name and plaster their face all over my thumbnail and use their videos without saying a word to them about it until maybe after dropping a message out of politeness. That’s just a really weird thing to do. Then influencers wonder why people don’t see them as human? That would be a weird creepy thing to do to someone who didn’t have 7 digits displayed on a page on the internet. So why do we normalise that? “Oh she signed up for it blah blah” no. Someone wanting to be a content creator doesn’t justify how we might treat them. Doing what you love shouldn’t be signing up for it, we make it that way and that’s a choice not a given.

YES this is super apparent in her old WIEIAD videos and her most recent ones. hitomi's videos on food often include thumb nails that are just straight up body checks with posed ab holds throughout. ive been following her channel for years now and love it but she has mentioned herself how it's hard for her to not continuously flex/ tighten her stomach while she's in videos (which is very understandable). i had to stop wathcing the wieiads this past year or so, her language around food+body are just pretty clear shes retained a few ed traces even if she no longer has it. it is a journey for life so def still proud of her, i just wonder if she knows how apparent it is to everyone else that's had an ed that the language she uses and ways she allows her body to exist on camera r very....nostalgic if u will....lol. but shit if the videos that had me looking the absolute smallest in my thumbnail were the ones that generally performed better idk how id be in recovery at all. shes strong af regardless.

This is the first time it's come to my attention that the Candida cleanse is a trendy thing! Also went through a major spout of depression when taking the antibiotics. It’s frustrating to me that they do this when it has never helped long term. I ended up cutting out sugar and gluten and that helped me within a month! I truly feel like Hitomi speaks from a holistic stand point that does help our guts restore and balance bacteria population.

My doctor put me on a medicine to help control my blood sugar, which at the time was completely out of control. One of the main side effects of the medicine was increased occurance of yeast infections. Anyone who has had one knows they are not pleasant. I worked with my OBGYN to find a probiotic that supported vaginal health (it needed to have a specific strain of bacteria and a minimum amount), and after about a month of using it I saw the constant yeast infections disappear. I didn't just willy nilly start taking all these supplements because some random person on the internet told me to. Instead when there was an issue I did my research, presented it to my doctor, and we worked together to find a solution. People need to stop taking what influencers (unlicensed and untrained usually) as gospel.

Personally I believe most cleanses are scientifically bogus, but in the same way people fast for religion some people believe in them and I think that's good if it's not really harming them. But I totally get that. Like sometimes I want to eat a whole cake but i refrain because my stomach will hurt and it's not worth it. Or I'll feel like drinking but I also don't like the feeling after. I liked what she said about the things being available to her whenever she wants them. It emphasizes her free-will, shes not being punished shes just making choices. It's okay if I choose the cake, but it's also okay not to

I don't think that Hitomi means ill will, she has admitted that she has struggled with oerthorexia, but she's been a huge factor in my understanding my mental health. I consider weight loss and eating healthy as a great addition to my mental health days after my ED, because of Hitomi. When I first was recovering, I watched her and learned techniques like radical acceptance, I learned to appreciate and romanticize my body. I've struggled with yeast infections that doctor's say I don't have even when I have discharge flare ups whenever I introduce something new there. Yeast infections have false negatives quite a bit from what I read.

I think when Hitomi said that it's okay to eat the vegan cookie, everything is available to me, but is this going to make your body feel good, and you were confused by this, my thoughts are by eating sugars on a candida cleanse, it disrupts the process of "killing" the yeast, so yes it's okay, but for this cleanse, it would not make her body feel good. Affirming that "all these yummy sweets i'm craving is available to me" while asking "is this going to make me feel good after I eat it" helps- it gets you out of the scarcity mindset, of needing to eat the cupcake I see by the register or else it'll be going shifting to it'll be here later, tomorrow, after this temporary cleanse, but if I really do want it, that's okay, I can always eat it (all the while being on a cleanse that eliminates sugar on a temporary cleanse, which is why in my opinion is craving the sweets, going through withdrawal, it's challenging not eating sweets- knowing it's for a health purpose. Like, I couldn't drink coffee for a week prior to undergoing something, and sure, I could've drank the coffee, and I really missed it, but I knew if I had the coffee, I wouldn't feel good afterwards because there was a purpose to eliminating coffee/caffeine, and having that coffee in the moment is delicious but wouldn't be nearly as delicious knowing I was missing out on maximizing my benefits for this sort of cleanse I was doing. I get that you're anti "no" , I don't agree with restriction, and cleanses for me are bit off putting because of previous disordered eating so I haven't taken the time to read about it without judgement, but I think your fear of people saying no to junk foods interferes with a neutral perspective (that's how i feel with how you come across in your videos), and this is about a cleanse perspective, not a typical day

Perhaps it's a Western issue, but the idea of building strength through boundaries or personal systems changes is quite ancient -- look to Buddhism for the most well known example. I don’t get it - are eating disorders diagnosed by nutritionists or by physicians/psychologists? The main thing I want my nutritionist to tell me, is how to eat as healthy as possible, in a science-backed way. There’s all this focus on how you should eat junk food and be okay with that, but is that truly good for our bodies? That’s what I want to know. Is there anyone better qualified to give me that answer, than a nutritionist? I get that it’s mentally healthy to not be too rigid with your diet, but if you have a health goal, what’s wrong with trying to stick with it and feeling disappointed when you mess up? Isn’t that what pushes you to try harder next time? Doesn’t seem logical to me, to ALWAYS see people working hard to be healthy as a red flag or an instant ED diagnosis.

One thing that should be mentioned about sugar is, is how addictive it is. I find myself only craving sweets if i eat them on a regular basis. In that case every single day the cravings come out of nowhere and i feel like i have to eat something sweet right now ( I can only imagine that this is how it feels to be addicted to some drug). However if i eat sweets only very rarely I'm not even craving them, neither do i miss eating them,. I could be at a bakery with super delicious looking cakes and cookies, but still Im not craving to eat any of these things. I do agree that in theory there's nothing wrong with eating sweets in moderation. However this is just not practical for me, as soon as i start eating sweets a few times a week again, im starting to getting addicted again. I can only imagine that this might be the case for many other people too. I want to metion that I'm not super enthusiastic about living health, nor do i need to eat healthy to be slim or 'look good'. However i still dont feel the need to train my brain to be addicted to something like sugar, when i literarilly not even miss it as soon as i dont eat it regularily anymore.
