DIFANG - ELDERS DRINKING SONG

Many may not be familiar with his name, but millions across the globe will recognise this Taiwanese traditional singer's voice. A sample of his plaintive Elder's Drinking Song chant was used by Michael Cretu as the backbone for Enigma's Return to Innocence which went on to become one of Enigma's biggest selling singles. However Cretu had not obtained Difang's permission prior to using the chant which prompted a court-case in 1996 that saw the two settle out of court three years later with Difang being compensated. The controversy around the case propelled Difang into the international spotlight, and Dan Lacksman (whose most famous project had been the first Deep Forest album) approached him to produce an album together. Released by Rock Records Japan in 1998 Circle of Life is a mesmerising combination of Lacksman's usual electronic drumloops, ambient synths and sounds carefully constructed so as not to interfere with Difang's heart-felt singing based on traditional Taiwanese songs of love, work and celebration. Slower, more laid-back beats support songs like Visiting Song and the contemplative Fully Laden with Riches with its tinkling piano instrumentation and Difang's characteristic yodelling calls. However the more upbeat tracks like Love Song (with Deep Forest style lead synth-flute) and Working Song (with its dark string theme) are the real highlights of the album. As an obvious reference to the court-case with Enigma, Lacksman made his own, gentler modernisation of Elder's Drinking Song as well as including the original version of the chant unaccompanied on the CD. With the layered and more reverential sound of Circle of Life we see Lacksman mature as a world music producer, in comparison to his previous outings such as Pangea. Difang was a prominent producer and supporter of Taiwanese aboriginal artists. His last work was to be the solo-outing Across the Yellow Earth in 2001, sadly just as Difang was gaining much-deserved international acclaim, he passed away (blood poisoning due to a centipede bite) in March 2002 at the age of 82. His wife who, whose vocals accompanied Difang's chants, passed away a month later.

These are the Amis aboriginals whose ancestors have lived in Taiwan (Formosa) for thousands of years before the Chinese and European migration to Taiwan. They are Austronesian which is a culture distinct from Chinese. It's very important to preserve the aboriginal cultures as many have become extinct over the last 400 years.

Thank you for acknowledging Igay’s part, her complex and challenging solo and harmonies are a huge part if what gave the original recording its magic, even if she is backgrounded here. Bad enough to go unacknowledged by Enigma /. EMI originally when they have generously recorded for a research project. But to even have her part completely ignored and obscured by the people who uploaded this, who knew the story is unforgiveable.

It was the record label that did it. Enigma argued with them to have them credited, but the label overturned it and these two were lost. I had no idea they existed and I clearly missed out, I only found out about them when I was researching where my Puerto Rican ancestors originated from, and the Amis and the Taino are distant cousins. ❤

Difang Duana (1921--2002) and Igay Duana (1922--2002), Chinese names Kuo Ying-nan and Kuo Hsiu-chu, were an Amis husband-and-wife folk music duet from Taiwan who specialized in traditional Amis chants. They are internationally known for their performance of a traditional Amis Palang song, "Weeding and Paddyfield Song No. 1", "Elders' Drinking Song", and "Jubilant Drinking Song", which was plagiarized by the French government and EMI, later used by Enigma for their hit single Return to Innocence.

It's nice to hear the chant standing alone. I'm sad to know how Enigma came by their sample of Difang's superb vocals and because of the underhanded dealings of the music industry, the tender unspoiled quality of this rendition holds even more meaning for me.

Taiwan has 14 registered aboriginal tribes. Beautiful music. But as in Canada, the governments selectively forget about aboriginal culture and let them go to the way side. If the world loses its aboriginal cultures it will truly be a culturally impoverished place. Dreams and knowledge of the way of life and being will have slipped back into the stars -- when in fact we still have a chance to touch its grace now. KL

+ Johnson Valiant It's strange how minority groups are looked down upon and have to fight for their rights to preserve their own culture. It seems to be the same all over the world. In my country, Norway, the minority the Samis aka Laps have had to fight this same fight. When a "primitive" culture meets a more technically advanced culture - it's usually "the primitive" that has to give way. I'm happy to say that in the northern parts of Scandinavia this trend of opression in the last decades have changed. Much thanks to the minority themselves that has become more open and including and better to express their different cultures. I believe the minorities themself can do much to help themselves by beeing more willing to explain and present their culture. It's easier to be negative to something that you know little about and don't understand.

Brings me to tears every single time I hear this. For me... a "soul source" that speaks to some deep part of me in a way I cannot explain nor fathom. I am so grateful for it's existence. Thank you Dinang and Igay for sharing your vocals and song. Thank you Enigma for discovering it, and sharing it for the rest of the world to know. It is magical!

Wow! I’m literally just discovering the truth about this song. They always say there’s one song that represents your life-This is mine. I was 14 when I first heard it and it transported me somewhere else completely. I’ve played it ever since and it’s as if I’m hearing it the first time, every time I play it. I feel like I’ve come full circle with knowing the history. I’m so sorry it was stolen from this couple and family. We’re in a phase of unveiling and I hope it continues. I pray this family gets the recognition it deserves as there has never been a song quite like this one. It somehow makes me feel at home. I thank this couple for sharing this gift with the world. So much love and so much respect. May they rest in peace.

Someone translated the lyrics as: My dear friends and relatives who come from far away! Thanks for coming to see us! Come! Let’s sit together. We will sing for you, As you sang for us when we visited you before. Let’s sing while we drink. How much we sing will be how much we drink. Can anyone who speaks the native language verify if the translation is correct?

This is true music and song. Popular Music today really shows how far humanity has degraded from what was once beautiful chanting, during work and celebration, to help pass the day or to talk with a higher power...this music is amazing to me. It's so raw, so natural, so beautiful. What have we become? Can we really say we've made progress?

I believe this chant was modified and used during the Olympics some years back. I was a flight attendant and always in Europe then. Reminds me of those days. In its pure form or modified, it's beautiful. I notice from my research that is the couple who made this famous were born a year apart and died on the same year. I'm sure they're still making beautiful music now.

i remember you , back then passenger airplanes were rubber band powered , female flight attendents were cumpolsarily made to pass gas(flatulence) while they walk to and fro through the airplane , promoting increased air accidents . that era is over . i have patented 9 inventions which suck out flatulence from airplane .
