Difang and Igay Duana sing "Weeding and Paddyfield Song No. 1" (sampled by Enigma in "Return to Innocence") while relaxing in their garage, on June 3, 2001.
I remember the controversy when Return to Innocence by Enigma first dropped back in 1994. Its also featured on the Man of the House soundtrack. Enigma tried it! I'm glad this beautiful couple sued and won! Rest in love and peace!
What controversy? Let's not re-write history. It was an obscure sample, that Enigma believed to be out of copyright. Also let's remember it was the early 90s and it was extremely difficult/impossible to trace unknown farmers living 8000 miles away in those days. A perfect testament to that is how long it took for a case to be made (5+ years after being a worldwide hit). Everyone settled and they got a payout and ongoing royalties from the song. What Enigma did with the sample was incredible, everyone should be really happy about it, rather than trying to make drama where there is none.
Beautiful couple and amazing musical tradition. I know they sued Enigma for their unauthorized usage of their song but finally they settled it in court. We should still thank Enigma for introducing their chant to us. Enigma actually did an amazing job in sampling their chant.
Well said! Michael Cretu should have respected this couple more.. and rewarded them accordingly and rightfully.. but still love enigma (so so much) and thank Michael Cretu for introducing us to this wonderful couple and musical tradition!
@@curandero IMO Cretu did nothing wrong. Let's go back to the early 90s and try and track down some obscure farmers 8000 miles away. Good luck with that. The fact that it took so long to become a legal case shows how hard it would have been to find them.
This couple were the aboriginals. The elder singer, Difang Tuwana, passed away in 2002. The tribe Amis is an Indigenous Austronesian ethnic group in Taiwan.
It is so nice to see Igay as well as Difang acknowledged. It is dismaying to see that even people who know the story of how they were initially erased as artists in the smash hit in the 20th century … still omit Igay’s name and contribution and speak of Difang in the 21st century as if he sang alone.
And those of us who heard it touch our souls and hearts through Enigmas song would never have experienced that. The melding of this chant with the lyrics of Enigmas song was brilliant and soulfully compelling and gave international and spiritual immortality, in essence, to the original artists ultimately. They live on in a magnificent way, beyond what they ever could have known individually if their singing had not been sampled. Credit, if not credit and compensation, was due the original artist morally as a contributor to the song. However, sampling a small portion of a song does not always get compensated in the music industry if it is under a specified number of seconds.

Kuo Ying-nan (nombre chino de Difang Duana) y Kuo Hsiu-chu (nombre chino de Igay Duana), un matrimonio de intérpretes de música folclórica de su país. Gracias !!!!!!
Communities usually are not payed for original sampled recordings because Western market usually don't understand what is a collective creation... Such a shame. The royalties should be directed to a local leader or an organisation able to repass the proper funds to them.
Original versions always get me excited. I'd like to know if there's a name for this type of vocal style (like Swisserland has got Yodel, for instamce)
Hey Debra. By chanse, did you know or get to meet the Duanas? When did you do that recording? I ask because they sound much older than the original and/or the Enigma. Thank you
My dear friends and relatives who come from far away! Thanks for coming to see us! Come! Let's sit together. We will sing for you, As you sang for us when we visited you before Let's sing while we drink. How much we sing is how much we drink
