Adjustment Period vs. Crash
There's a big difference between a crash/setback and an adjustment period however, most people overreact to the symptoms they're feeling. Their emotional response alone is enough to amplify the physical symptoms you feel.

This is great, Miguel--I had an "adjustment period" recently and I was beating myself up for how I brought it on (up too late, on screens, ate highly processed food), and really getting down on myself because I thought I was going into a crash...but then it turned back around pretty quickly when I just started eating better (whole foods), walking, and getting better sleep...thanks for these videos--you're the best!

Yes exactly! Crashes feel like the end of the world, whereas when we think of these times as adjustment periods it has a more "temporary" ring to it. Plus that's exactly what it is, your body is adjusting to the new activity. Your success is determined by how well you respond to symptoms.

This concept is so amazing. I have struggled with CFS for 4.5 years but am mostly in remission. I have been aiming for FULL recovery for 9 months. Everything you say in your book is extremely similar to ANS REWIRED (which ive been diligently doing for 9 months) but so much more succinct. AND ive been searching for the answer of WHY i have these "setbacks". Now i can reframe them as adjustment periods. Ive been so confused about whether i rest in these periods or pretend theyre not happening (as some mind-body illness coaches suggest). Im so grateful you say to rest during the adjustment period and DONT PANIC. I dont tend to panic anymore but i get so discouraged and disappointed. Now i dont need to. I can remind myself that i am adjusting and im on my way to victory 🙏🏻

@@marvel_bro7598 i started last September by watching raelan agle videos. She said it took 18 months of dedicated effort for her and i committed to that. I emmersed myself in cfs recovery videos. I found a pattern emerged: gut health, diet overhaul, brain retraining. So i dove in to these three things. I have dedicated myself to the ANS REWIRE program and am watchimg the videos for the 3rd time and integrating almost all suggestions, especially daily meditation. When ive had my setbacks (aka adjustment periods) ive listened even more intently. There are great videos from various people who have recovered from CFS or chronic pain (basically its the same treatment). And i never give up. Also added hypnotherapy to continue to 1) heal my autonomic nervous system and 2) combat skepticism and foster hope and belief mindset

@@cfsrecovery hi Miguel - can you be in an adjustment for 6 months? I’ve been in bed with some symptoms fluctuating but some ‘fixed’ (fatigue/tinnitus/blurred vision/pain/etc). Am I still in initial crash or missing opportunities to expand? Confused - applied for the programme, doing the brain retraining (I can switch off my leg pain, but it comes back seconds later?) and trying to be nonchalant to the various symptoms, but some are always there? It’s v debilitating. I guess I need some clarity - am I in and out of adjustments if I can move around (with anxiety/pain) but not continually unable to get up as if I were truly continually ‘crashed’.. it’s like the body has stabilised in a place of continual symptoms, which I can’t seem to rest/retrain out of? I’ve been trying for months and going in circles. So I’m essentially bedridden and de conditioned/in fight and flight for 6 months? Should I be trying to do activity, when I do I get more symptoms but then when they go down my baseline is v sick? I have recently had 14 days without an actual crash, but am never free of quite a few hard symptoms? Thanks again - I know I’ve popped up on a few threads asking for advice. Andy

Thanks Miguel. This is really interesting and just what I needed to hear this week. This concept of an 'adjustment period' on the way up makes sense of my experience this week. I had a significant shift in capacity from 20% to 40% almost over night three weeks ago. I was suddenly up at 5:30/6 every morning like I used to be before being ill after 9 months needing 10 hours sleep. This week however my energy dipped. Is this what you're talking about? As usual I am trying to attribute it to something. Diet. Viral relapse. Perhaps it is just nervous system calibration. I went into denial about it and tried to push through it for many days. I'm trying to relent to it now and rest. Thank you for your articulation of this phenomenon. (I find the severity you talk about 'crash' quite intense and scary. I wonder if there is a way to soften that language. 'Intense dip'.) Thank you for generously sharing your insight

Hey man: So long story short I’ve gotten to points where I’ve been functional, but still with symptoms and with work and still working out pretty hard, even doing cardio, I’ve been getting worse and I’ve decided that I’m going to cut back quite a bit in activities (and incorporating de stressing better). I’ve been pretty much been chillen since Tuesday besides work and I actually feel worse. Is this potentially a normal thing in your experience? Thanks!
@cfsrecovery
@cfsrecovery 2 года назад
You’re definitely trying to move too fast in the recovery! You should only be working out pretty hard and doing cardio regularly when you’re feeling absolutely no symptoms. Yes you’ll have symptoms when you do intense activities but you need to give your body time to adjust, probably have one week in between workouts maybe even two. There’s also a delayed effect with adjustment periods so even if you stop Tuesday Shuffle effects of what you’ve done won’t hate you sometimes even until a week later

Why do we have adjustment periods? Do you think it’s the brain fighting back since it’s so used to bring in the fight or flight state? Like it thinks that fight or flight is homeostasis?
@6473n64m19
@6473n64m19 2 года назад
This is a good question: but I’m not so sure it’s helpful to try to decode this scientifically. Personally from having many ups and downs I just know that when you are having less symptoms it’s significantly easier to bounce back after greater amounts of stimulation and with more symptoms you’re going to probably get that stronger feedback that comes about with less activity, just about how stressed the system is. Always comes down to stress

How often would you say is appropriate to push you limits and initiate a new adjustment period? I'm doing the DNRS now and they suggest challenging yourself everyday, but that doesn't feel right. Why push when I'm in the midst of an adjustment period with elevated symptoms? In those times getting through the day by itself is a big challenge. As an example, lets say an adjutment period lasts one week before I feel back at baseline.

I had stomach pains and was totally exhausted on the toilet with constipation. Afterwards I was shaking like after the worst panic attack. I took a benzo straight away and went to bed. Woke up 2 hours later with a pulse of 135. Just continued to rest. Unfortunately I had to go to the toilet again late in the evening, I still had energy but my body felt weakened. Less energy than usual during the night, but finally got some sleep. I also slept in the morning until midday, then went to the bathroom again briefly, I could just about manage. Got worried around noon because even breathing was too strenuous. Arms and legs are burning badly, but I don't care, I can move them less because of exhaustion. No palpitations, rather a low pulse when you are weak, hardly any dizziness, just pain and fatigue at symptom level 7-8. Is this now an AP or a crash? I've been sensitive to light for a while, no headaches from it or anything, just flickering vision. 2 severe symptoms pain and fatigue, pain doesn't interest me at all, with the weakness I'm already worried that I'll go "backwards" and have to start from scratch again. The longer I have to take it easy, the easier it is to end up crashing again from the simplest activities. What do you think AP or crash?

I'm sorry to hear about the deterioration in your condition and the new symptoms you're experiencing. It can be challenging to find a baseline with POTS, especially with young children to take care of. Here are a few suggestions that may help: 1. Listen to your body and pace yourself throughout the day. Prioritize rest when needed and try to find a balance between things. 2. Reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance on managing the new symptoms and any changes in your condition. They may be able to provide specific recommendations or adjustments to your treatment plan. 3. Continue with your meditation routine, as it can be beneficial for managing stress and promoting relaxation. 4. It's great that you're trying the Gupta brain retraining method. Give it time and remain consistent with the practice. Remember that different approaches work for different individuals, so continue exploring techniques and therapies that resonate with you. 5. Take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. Ensure you're getting enough rest, nourishing your body with a balanced diet, and engaging in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Stay patient, keep advocating for yourself, and don't hesitate to seek support from healthcare professionals and others who may have experience with POTS. In another video about "what should I do if I crash" you say that a crash lasts a week and that would be a very long crash. Could you say again which is more accurate? One week or 3 months +. Because then I'm already preparing myself for 3 months. I could walk and now I can't even sit for an hour. What's interesting is that I'm completely mentally there and I'm not tired, no brain FOG, I'm not tired at all. But I sleep badly at night and my body just doesn't want to, it can't sit and walk. feels like a bad flue. muscles are shaking but no crazy pain, only some burning sensations and fast heartbeatings.
