I enjoyed that video. Explained WAY better than any of my professors have done. The jokes were great by the way, and I am shocked that not many people laughed during it.

Excellent video... great presenter, appreciated the humor. 😂 I've often wondered why asphalt is chosen over concrete for road building but it seems easy to assume it's just a faster product to build a road with and leaves a smoother surface. Quicker and easier to repair as well I'd guess. Of course I've also wondered why concrete is sometimes used for roads instead of asphalt. I remember visiting family in Iowa as a kid and noticing lots of concrete roads that had a distinctive texture. Driving on those roads would make a lot of racket that I thought was really annoying on long car trips. I'm guessing the concrete is more durable with all the freeze and thaw cycles that area sees but maybe it was just a cost based decision.

Asphalt liquid is manufactured from crude oil to the bottom of the barrel, so the liquid asphalt is the bottom of the barrel of crude oil that they’ve get the gasoline and the oil, and all that when they got to the bottom of the barrel they didn’t know what to do with it back in the day and they made roofing grade asphalt and paving grade asphalt, and that was great in the beginning they just wanted to get rid of the material right, they wanted to get rid of it and so they didn’t even want to make a profit, nowadays, they’ve got new technologies to recraft the bottom of the barrel to get more of the lighter product, the more profitable it is for the refinery, so what’s happening is that product is never going to get cheaper, it’s always going to be more expensive, because it’s harder and harder to come by right, and they want to make a profit, and they want to recraft and figure out how to get the lighter products out of it, so that’s why you know the price of asphalt is always going up somehow someway, I don’t know how or why, but the price of cement seems to stay at about the same level as a binder as the price of asphalt, I wonder why that is, it’s a product of limestone, and limestones is a natural resource and they have to source it out of the side of a mountain and it’s not easy to find, but it’s interesting that that’s exactly what it cost about the same we’re going to go into that in more detail incidentally. The instructor is awesome. Concrete roads can rot and burn in hell as far as I'm concerned though.

Glad you resonate with Daren. How do you really feel about concrete roads, though? Just curious... :-)

@@scouttrooper3450 Perhaps by some standards. I believe harder to patch when they do start cracking. "Like concrete, asphalt is 100% recyclable. When melted down, it can be used again to create new roadways. New asphalt is quieter than concrete. Though it creates a smooth drive, it also boasts better traction and skid resistance." Also, on new construction it is my theory they cause excessive wear on tires until "broken in" and all the "jaggies", which you don't get with asphalt to as much of an extent and they are softer, get filled in with rubber. I haven't verified this, but the logic makes sense to me. You know the black tire tracks on an otherwise greyish road. They re-did a patch of highway by my parents in concrete. There is a small stretch of asphalt due to something with the state and proximity to a bridge or waterway or something. Not sure what the regulation is. Your driving along noisy as heck, then you hit the asphalt and quiet, well providing your vehicle is up to snuff and what tires you have. The crew also did a pretty crap job of mixing consistently. the road changes colors or shades as you go. Also, increased road noise at my parents rural farm site. I prefer quiet and grippy vs noisy and abrasive. I'd rather pay the premium for ride quality.
