Today, we're looking at 3 different delay types (digital, tape, analog) and are listening to the tonal differences between them with audio examples.
Strymon DIG
Strymon El Capistan
Diamond Memory Lane Jr.
*** Note that the Diamond Memory Lane Jr. is not a stereo delay like the Strymon pedals, so the stereo image a lot less wider. Don't get fooled by the stereo image and listen to the characteristics of the repeats!
***Note 2: The Strymon El Capistan can sound much cleaner, but I left the secondary functions like that so you can really hear the tonal characteristics of tape delays such as the Tape Bias and Tape Crinkle!
Tell me in the comments what is your favorite delay type from those 3 and why!
Thanks for watching and see you later for a new episode :)

What if you had a digital delay but turned down the mix of the highs or brightness wouldn't that create a more tape sounding delay?
@AntoineMichaudGuitar
@AntoineMichaudGuitar 7 лет назад
Very good point! I think it would turn it more into an analog sounding delay, because it would be darker sounding. It couldn't sound like a tape, because you still miss the artefacts, the bias, wow & flutter (etc.) that make it sound like a tape!
@Pascal270
@Pascal270 7 лет назад
AndroxineVortex If you use the Dig in 12 bits mode, it sounds much more warmer 😉
@Deeplycloseted435
@Deeplycloseted435 6 лет назад
Real tape delays are actually very crisp with preserved transients and while the repeats may wobble a bit, and get quieter, they do not degrade like an analog bucket brigade. The El Cap adds pitch modulation, wow/flutter, and the “tape type” adds the degraded sound you hear, as if its an old used tape. If you go check out some demoes of restored tape machines, they sound very clear. The T Rex Replicator is a poor example. The new Fulltone is pretty good.

You will find on my channel that I try to be more concise and focusing on what's essential when I teach something. For example, I've made a 2 minutes video on how to change strings with locking tuners, and the average time for that subject on RU-vid is over 10 minutes. Some people just want to get the most watching time. I want to provide the most value. Thanks Kevin :)

All 3 are digital delays. The memory lane is a digital emulation of analog and the el cap is a digital emulation of a tape delay.

If I just want 1 type of delay on my pedalboard, do you think it's possible to make do with just a digital delay? Currently I have a DIG version 2, and that has a tone knob to kinda make things darker when required. Assuming it will be used in normal and ambient context, though perhaps reverb makes more of a difference for ambient.
@AntoineMichaudGuitar
@AntoineMichaudGuitar Год назад
Yes, I think a digital delay with a tone knob and modulation controls is the best option to get the most variety of delay tones with only one type!

Fantastic review! Nailed my own interests in the different types. Helped me save big bucks by not having to buy one, just to want another...Also, your playing really highlights the delay. It is beautiful...For me, I like the modulation of the DIG just slightly better than the others, but as you say, they all 3 can fit different needs. Maybe the Timeline is the most economical then.

I think a lot of companies get the tape emulation wrong. It depends on how old/ dirty the tape and machine are, but tape repeats are bright with the low end rolled off.
@MrArchonta

Very smart pedal comparison, nice comments on the pedals. I would pick the DIG pedal for clean, modulated arpeggios, phrases and ambient stuff. The Diamond pedal is far warmer and it can sound better on clean, slow soloing and classic / progressive rock passages. Tape delays offer more solid tones through an amp's lead channel. All these pedals are not cheap, but they offer quality, innovation and are pedal board friendly. Just a click or two below the costlier and bulkier holy grail delay pedals such as Moog, Cornish, S.I.B., etc.

Good job, but surely those pedals sound good with other settings too. I don't care as much for digital delay as I do for vintage/tape/echo. I like the El Cap and the Diamond a lot, I love the TC Alter Ego X4, the Empress Vintage Modified Superdelay, I love the new Walrus and the Belle Epoche, which does a very impressive emulation of the Echoplex EP3. By the way, an EP3 can sound pretty pristine -- not glassy/snappy like a digital delay, but, depending on the settings and depending on the condition of the tape and heads, the repeats can sound a lot closer to the original sound.

I have a lesson on that coming on the channel later this month. Short answer is: I think it's better to combine 2 different types to blend the different tones. Digital and Analog. Digital and Tape. etc. Just not two with almost the same tone.

In essence digital delay is a perfect repeat of your signal exactely like you played it while analog delay slightly changes each repeat. Tape delay is the same as analog but with an unique sounding filter over delayed sound. People like analog/tape delay because repeats sound like a second guitar when the sound overlaps with your playing while digital kinda sounds bad, you can hear it in the video.

Thanks for your video. I'm thinking about to buy an Strymon but I didn't know the different betwen them. At the moment I have the Carbon Copy, which is a very nice delay but simple. I'm going to keep it anyway but I want something else with more possibilities. Being honest, it is difficult to tell you my favourite pedal. El Capistan has a really nice warm sound, but with the second exemple, really liked the DIG. Also, I want it to use with different kind of guitars I have, so the sound probably will change. Nice review.

The difference between digital and analog is not very massive, using an arduino you could probably have 20 fx pedals in one using programming, which would be 99 percent close to analogue or digital effects... tape warmth is just a study of filter effect and degredation of the audio into warmer sounds, fx boxes are just much more convenient than having something that is open source or takes sd cards... some programmable SD cards fx boxes could be as versatile has having 2000 banks all on one stereo channal low latency sound card in a box. probably some stuff exists of that kind. for the moment fx boxes are like vinal they are moslty very practical and nice obects.

I am torn between the EL Cap and the MLJ for my Acoustic Pedalboard? I currently have the DD-500 (on my big board) and I Love it = Toolbox full of Delays with deep-dive tone sculpting (so I have Digital, Analog & Tape and many others). Digital steps-on-your initial playing too much. Clutters your sound. For Acoustic Guitar - I prefer either Tape or Analog. Leaning towards the El Cap ???
@empathysgone96

Michael Caz hey bud I’ve purchased way too many delays for acoustic. It’s a tough thing to add effects too. It depends on your pick ups for one. I was not a fan of the el cap. Sounded too muffled. The Dig is nice but too bright if you have an undersaddle. I love my volante. It’s amazing! But I am considering the MLJ as well. It sounds warm and dreamy!
