I am going to make a pedal called “Procrastination” as a really cool “delay” pedal!

For me, for many years it was a case of "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", but actually now I have found it - Strymon Volante. I'm not advocating that particular pedal (but you know, check it out), rather than to say - try as many as you can get your hands on. For many guitar styles, delay is super important, and although delay is easy to get into, its also one of those things that can take a life time to truly master.

Have you tried any oilcan-style delays? I recently discovered the OBNE Black Fountain, the modulation it introduces is really fluid and works well in ambient flavors

Great video. I’m a bass player. I find different types of delay work great for different things. I like tape delay for long ambient delays with bass it helps keep it from getting too muddy and it’s just more interesting sounding, analog delay with modulation for some things. Digital delay for tapping parts and I’ll make it more subtle for soloing. I really like having a quarter note and a dotted eighth in parallel summed to mono also. Something I haven’t found many delay pedals are capable of. It a different sound then having them in series.

My favorite delay was my first. An Ibanez Delay Champ. God that thing was warm. It was lost in a studio move. That was at a time when there were 5 delay pedals on the market. Now I'm having decision overload at the infinite choices. Although I have the option of getting an old Ibanez. A lot of the tape ones look good though..........

Thank you, Bill! Just was wondering if you could make a video explaining how you are fiddling the knobs to get the sound you want to get? Perhaps you had done something like that (for sure = you have done it with some particular devices). Maybe some insights or discoveries you had?
@chordsoforion
@chordsoforion 3 года назад
Are you referring to the Timeline specifically?
@avpostbox
@avpostbox 3 года назад
@@chordsoforion Not specifically TimeLine, though it is good enough for any demo. Like if you want to get sound like this (long, short, for the lead, for layers, etc..) get Level this way, Feedback this much, Decay like this, etc. Just some "recipes" of your kitchen Bill you give more than enough info already and thank you for that again. It is always educating and inspiring. Maybe a kind of a general approach? If I have managed to make myself clear? Or like how to get the same or close effect with TimeLine and Flashback?

@@chordsoforion I never knew about Baritone guitars, what is the difference? I assume you could tune yours into EADGBE and I could tune my 'normal' guitar into your tuning....is your tuning because its a baritone, or just your preference? Thanks
@garretteverett2613
@garretteverett2613 3 года назад
Baritone guitars use heavier strings to tune lower, and have a longer neck to improve intonation at these heavier gauges. I personally have set up several different kinds of standard-scale guitars with heavy strings for baritone tuning, with success on a hollow-body archtop with Bigsby, a set-neck ESP, and a stratocaster with a vibrato. My acoustic guitars worked fingerstyle, but buzzed a lot when picked. If you're handy, you can buy baritone replacement necks for strat- and telecaster bolt-on models if you're looking for the most affordable way to own a baritone guitar. Otherwise, you have a fairly limited selection of expensive models - and if you are looking at acoustics, your only real options are eBay and custom order. All that said, baritone tuning is a unique sound that can inspire new approaches to music.

I have a digital and an analog and I use both for different things, also I have the analog before the digital. When playing something like Ain't talkin bout Love I got the digital delay right at the end of the chain, behind the reverb and modulation even, and I have it's level slightly lower than unity gain so it doesn't get in the way as much but is still very much present. For the analog I've got the level quite a bit lower than unity and I switch the timing & repeats up between short & a moderate amount and middle-ish with a few delays depending on if I use it for arpeggiated chordal work or saturated lead tones. On that last one I keep the modulation to high at all times 😏 Then there's this setting I use for ambient leads (so I can turn of the reverb because it would get in the way) where I have them ping-pong on each other. I don't have a big stereo rig so I gotta improvise right?
