Explaining the difference between the straight right punch and the right cross punch. Going between these 2 punches, the techniques of how to throw them, and how they're used [differently] strategically in a fight. I try to cover a little more of the nuance between them rather than the obvious definition that most boxers know already. You'll also learn how these punches set up different follow-up punches or movements.

Most comprehensive explanation of the straight and cross. I've been using both and always thought of them both as cross! Now I know the difference it's going to be easier to use for different situations.

Brazilian boxing teachers teach that the right criss is the hook. That's always caused me confusion, after all, what is a right cross? what is a hook? Watching your video, I discovered the difference. Thanks!

Haha, yeah. It's confusing. It's half-form, half-strategy.

I would say the right cross is probably the most powerful punch right? Because you're using your entire body to punch with all your dominant muscles. You got your whole arm you're using your shoulder tricep bicep and forearm when kinda turning your arm. You're also using your dominant leg and you're also putting some of those hook muscles like your hips and abs into the curve while directing the punch across.
@expertboxing
@expertboxing 3 года назад
Yes, it's arguably the most powerful punch (in terms of power output as you say). But ultimately in a fight, the most powerful one is the one that lands and hits your opponent blind.

It’s weird how a lot of boxing gyms seem to over look the fact that these are two different punches. More seemed like they were two different ways of throwing the same punch and I also noticed some gyms favour one over the other. I think more trainers should study these differences more comprehensively

Dear Sir, with over 30 years of experience in martial arts, now retirer, 66, let me poitn out two aspects, which need further considerations: - RIght directs vs. and Right corsses, are prorbably are based on shifting power but turning dfdirect por into rotational one, Muhammad Ali dit it more than well. The problem is in the countermovement of the Cross, theat need far more strength to repat/or recovar tha a standard boxing RIght and the follow-uúp coming left hook. With best regards anmawaiting your comments, Paul 66, retired instructor of Goju-ryu Karate
@expertboxing

If you throw a straight right, following with a shifting left hook with high elbow is more natural. If you throw a right cross, an upwards arcing left hook to the body or head is more natural.

It looks like a Straight punch thrown like a Far Hook. A far hook is thrown at an Angle: so you swing your right arm out from the side arched downwards. It’s a type of hook so I call a far hook However a cross looks like the same thing but not arched. But thrown forward
@expertboxing
@expertboxing Год назад
A hook comes around. A cross comes forward with maybe a little arc at the beginning. A straight is totally straight. And then there's a range of all the in-betweens. Throw what you need to throw to land.

Good channel but you're wrong Johnny the cross and the straight right is the same punch. Any rear punch that comes across the body is the cross. Either left for southpaw or right for orthodox. The second punch when you dip your head and come over is the overhand right.
@expertboxing
@expertboxing 4 года назад
Actually, I’m right and you’re wrong in this case. Only because I accounted for more interpretations than you did. My head can still dip regardless if I throw a straight right or curved right. The right hand can “cross” (your body or opponents jab) regardless of straight or curved. So really...to call any interpretation wrong is “wrong” in itself since it’s taught in various forms and despite the inconsistency, not really all that complicated as a topic.
@mastrdanart
@mastrdanart 4 года назад
@@expertboxing I hear you but you only really have 5 variations of the rear hand (right or left) the cross, uppercut, 90 °hook, and 45° Hook( or shovel hook) and the overhand . that's pretty much all I ever learned Boxing 35 yrs.
@expertboxing
@expertboxing 4 года назад
missing the wide (looping) right, also right jab aka lead right, dipping right to the body. Right uppercut itself has 2 variations (shifting weight vs w/o shifting). I remember Kostyra Tszyu saying there were 6 ways to throw a right hand. But even within that there are many nuances.
@mastrdanart
@mastrdanart 4 года назад
@@expertboxing I see but they re really just variations of the those particular punches with added footwork, shifts, except for the looping right which I personally never use (just too slow and leaves you open.

M. Bee lol the straight right is too slow and dangerous.
@morgueblack
@morgueblack 5 лет назад
It should really depend on the situation. I find the straight right to be more often used, it's "safer" because it's easier to return to your guard. It's also a good range finder other than using the jab. It is also quicker since there is less rotation involved and you are not as off-balanced. The cross is more powerful than the straight because there is more rotation involved and it can really cut across to the opponent's face. It's also good if you want to slip your opponent's jab and throw a counter at the same time eg. "Cross-Counter".
@jtr2287

Cross is way more powerful, especially if you throw it like an overhand, that's what conor mcgregor does
@williamdavis7629

Back in the day, the term “cross” was used to describe a right hand thrown over an opponent’s left jab. The punch travelled over or “crossed over”

With the right cross and the head moving off the centerline, your left shoulder drops too. Since that raises the right shoulder, is that also an overhand right?
