The similarities in geography and natural resources of Vietnam and the Philippines have created similarities and differences in their cultures. The Philippine Islands and Vietnam share a number of important similarities in terms of land area, population, economic size, colonial history, geography and topology. However, they differ in economic structures, government formation, religion, and customs.
The Philippines covers an area of 300,000 square kilometers making it the 72nd biggest nation by land area while Vietnam is relatively bigger with an area of 331,699 square kilometers, it ranks 66th biggest nation by this category.
Though its topology is different, the Philippines is a group of around 7,641 Islands between the Pacific Ocean and the South China sea, and form a part of the geography of the Malay Archipelago. The Philippine Island are broadly categorized under three main geographical divisions from Luzon in the North, Visayas in the central part, and Mindanao in the South.
On the other hand, Vietnam is a long continuous coastal piece of land, stretching at the eastern edge of Indochinese Peninsula. Vietnam has four major geographic regions. It's northern tip, The Truong Son Annam Highlands is in the south of the delta and forms the backbone of Vietnam. Also in this region are the Central Highlands, a big upland plateau set between the Cambodian border and the South China Sea. The Red River Delta, and southernmost region is the Mekong Delta.
In terms of Inhabitants, though the Philippines is comparably smaller in terms of land area, its population is relatively bigger with, over 111 million making it the 13th most populous country in the world. While Vietnam comes closer with over 98 million inhabitants, and ranks as the 15th most populous country.
By its economic size, not surprising that the Philippines and Vietnam have almost the same economy. The gross domestic product of the Philippines is slightly bigger, amounting to $394.08 billion, the 36th biggest economy by nominal GDP according to the 2021 official figures of the world bank. As compared to Vietnam’s GDP amounting to $362.6 billion, rank 39th in the same category. In terms of its GDP per capita, Vietnam is slightly higher at $3,694 while the Philippines is $3,548.
When GDP is measured by purchasing power parity, Vietnam’s Economy is relatively bigger, having $1.1 Trillion compared to the Philippines at $1.01 Trillion.
