I've always preferred rats because the ones I've had in my life always seem to be much more enthusiastic about being handled. I've never had a mouse in my life that wanted to be cuddled and coddled. If I wanted a pet that I couldn't cuddle, I'd get a fish. XD No offense to fish keepers. I love fish myself, but I gotta have me them cuddles.

Yeah, I’ve never owned mice, but I was interested in getting a male before I got my rats. I did a lot of research on mice, but came to the conclusion that they were way too independent and non cuddly for me. I really like animals that want to cuddle, play and interact with you and now that I think about it, it’s probably because I’m suicidal and my fam doesn’t really comfort me about anything.... eh, whatever, I’ve got my rats I’m fine

What a little cutie :) It is so cute how really old mice get all tottery just like elderly humans. I have a little one just like that right now. She is super friendly and walks in the same arthritic way that is so cute in elderly mice :) I prefer mice over rats because they suit me better, but for most people rats are better. Basically rats are like dogs, very easy to tame and bond with, mice are more like horses, very beautiful, flighty and independent, you have to work at creating a bond with a mouse and it requires more skill. I have always found rats smell more than mice but maybe that is because the last set of rats I had were all un-neutered boys who frequently squabbled. They had greasy fur and strong smelling urine. They were a lot of work keeping up with cage cleaning. They were super sweet towards humans though. I find that un-neutered male mice can smell very, VERY bad, much more than rats, but once neutered they smell no more than female mice. Female mice only smell if there are unresolved territorial disputes, otherwise they smell less than rats and much less than guinea pigs and rabbits. Maybe it is just that I am so used to their smell that I no longer notice it, but I keep my mice in large open concept mouseries with excellent ventilation and clean their home frequently. If you are a creative person like me then mice are perfect, they are so tiny and so beautiful, they make super filming and photographing. They are small and easier to keep than rats, and wonderful to watch if you are into animal behavior. Bonding with someone so tiny is magical and a very precious thing, mice are fairy tale creatures :)

I had 2 male pygmy mice a few years ago when I was a teenager. My mum got them for me thinking they were maintainable, however, after getting them, I did have to clean their cage every few days after the smell gets too strong. The mice that I got were really outgoing and responded well with handling, so I would handle them every day without a fuss. I fed them mixed rodent food with fruit as a treat occasionally. They lasted quite a while for pygmy mice (2 years) and I loved them so much, they are great pets and worth having, if you don't mind regularly cleaning their cage and spending a lot of time with them. Great video! I've never owned rats, and since I've owned mice before, I feel like I could be ready to start getting rats as pets soon, but I really want to do a lot of research before getting them, like I do with all of the pets that I own and have owned in the past 😊

I have had both mice and rats and I prefer rats. My mouse, Phoebe, has just recently passed away (she had a cage mate but she passed away before I got her- their previous owners weren't the best caretakers) and I miss her very much. Mice are sweethearts and can be super cute to have around. But I have noticed a very big difference in intelligence between mice and rats, and a difference in their relationship with me. Rats are much more outgoing and less fearful.

Joshua Mydik It depends on what his house is made of, if it is wood they tend to mark it a lot more than a plastic one. I advise getting a plastic house like and igloo because it is much easier to clean. If their house is a hammock then you should wash it once a week

I currently have both a male mouse and two male rats. Some mice cages will be too small; I had a mouse once from the Humane Society that was the size of a gerbil. Mice smell. I can clean his tank and it smells half an hour later. I have tried all the suggestions I've read about and he still smells. You just have to accept that with mice. If you have limited space and less time to spend with them then mice are good pets, smell excepted. They are more a pet to watch than interact with, but they are cute and it's fun to watch their acrobatics while climbing. Rats are superior in terms of being a pet to interact with. They seek out human interaction and can be handled easily. They do require a lot of space and time. They need time with their humans so you need to be prepared to have them as part of your life like you would with a dog or cat. You can't shut them away in a separate room and just see them for an hour a day. All rats are different but I found female rats never sit still so you're always on watch when they are out. Mice are less expensive to keep. My rats were $10 to adopt, but have a $300 cage and have had vet bills in total of over $500. Rats will need a vet at some point in their lives, most likely multiple times. My rats are 18 months old and have been to the vet 3 times already for respiratory infections and resulting medicine. Your mouse is less likely to need to go to the vet.

Awesome video, your mouse is so unique looking 😄 I've had both rats and mice (mice currently) and I'd have to say it just depends on your situation and what you're looking for to best suit your needs/wants. Rats are my personal favorite because they are friendlier, easier to tame, and love interacting with you! Mice can also love human interaction, but take more time to tame in my opinion and mine would much rather keep to themselves. Also if cage size is an issue, rats need a larger/taller cage, whereas mice live in a smaller cage/tank or can live in a bin cage. Rats are more of a commitment as well because they need to have floor time or be taken out of the cage, whereas mice don't necessarily need to. Lastly I do agree mice smell a bit more than rats despite how small they are. So it really depends on what you're looking for in a pet, how much space you have, and how much time you're willing to commit 😊
@scumbag576
@scumbag576 6 лет назад
If anyone is struggling to hand tame a mouse, here is a good way. Put their cage near your kitchen (if you can) and Everytime you go in give them a tiny bit of food, and eventually they will look forwards to you coming into the kitchen to I've them food, and then just slowly win them over. That's how I got my mouse zues to love me. I remember he was extremely skittish and would bolt Everytime he heard me coming. I had to put his cage out on the bar for some reason (can't really remember why) and Everytime I went into the kitchen I'd be like oh hey there cutie lemme get you peanut butter or something. And after about a month of giving him food, he stopped running from me and would get excited when I came to him, and he wanted me to hold and pet him, and eventually he started grooming my teeth like a rat (which is sign of complete trust) Sadly zues got a tumor and my parents wouldn't let me go an get it removed because a "mouse isn't as important as a dog" and he ended up dying on December 1st, 2016. I still miss that Lil dude

Great video and comparison. Haha yes mice do have a strong scent I find that with mine compared to when I had my rats. I heard that neutering or spaying mice can help reduce smell but it would seem very risky on them seeing as they are very small. I'm gonna test something out though to see how to reduce odors and if it works I will make a video on that. I was actually planning to make one of these as it has been requested a few times but I don't think I need to seeing as you have done such a great job! I might do hamsters vs mice as that's also been requested. To answer your question, I personally love both but if I had to choose, I would pick rats :)

Hello! :) In my experience: Mice are more like cats, they're more independent, more smelly, and very active. They will be sweet and groom you, but they don't like to sit still & snuggle; they'd rather run around! Rats are more like dogs, they will drop everything to greet you when you come home. They're less smelly, but more demanding in time & space. They will also be very sweet and groom you, and seem happy to snuggle up for a nap while you watch tv. Hope that helps!

I have two girls (mice) I had a mix of paper bedding, news paper shreds, hay, and pine BUT I had to take the pine outside and undust it with a pasta strainer and I only put in about 2/8 of what was in my cage with pine. No issues but very labor intensive to undust it I only used it really because I had an open bag that I couldn't get rid of.

I have both rats & mice...in addition to many other species. I definitely agree on the smell. My mouse is 10x smeller than my 2 rats. The rats are handleable and love interacting with me; the mouse will take food from my fingers, but screams & bites if I touch him. The rats are very clean; the mouse tends be a bit on the dirty side. I'm working on litter training the rats; the mouse poops & pees EVERYWHERE! The rats have a wheel, but don't use it much; whereas, the mouse runs constantly & makes noise all night.

I have had rats and mice as pets and personally I like rats more. Don't get me wrong, the mice I had, Rusty and Dusty (they were sisters), were super sweet and fun to have around. I just always had more of a bond with my rats. Mice did have a stronger smell to them than rats did and I noticed that mice were messier and a bit more noisy than rats. Rusty was a real chatter box and constantly kept me up at night, but maybe that was just her.

little tipp to notist; Male mice smell way more then Female Mice do! having 4 to 8 female mice gets you 1-2 weeks to the smelly point, 2-4 male mice do the same smellyness in 3-7 days^^ It is the piss, it marks there teritory and helps them finde breading partners ;)

I had rats growing up, I believe they are much better pets for older children than mice as they're much more sociable, and affectionate, and you can actually handle them. Now as an adult I have 6 female mice sharing a large enclosure. They're wonderful as they are perfectly happy with minimum human interaction, they enjoy being handled and pet but only for very short moments. I prefer rats because they have such big personalities and love to explore, but they do require more entertainment from their human than mice which isn't always available from adults.

I personally prefer rats but love mice. I disagree with the smell part only because I change my rats every two days and my past mice I changed less often. Rats have a much stronger odor imo but if your frequently changing it shouldn't be a issue! I also do that more for my hairless girl (lavender) because obviously she's more sensitive with her skin being more exposed so to avoid any discomfort 4 her it's always changed every 2 days and wiped down with a vinegar water solution to disinfect. Great video!!!!!

I have three female mice and one female rat who lives alone in a tank. before anyone yells at me, she is only in her tank when I sleep. as soon as I can, I as going to get her a cage instead. I haven't owned Mice before at least successfully. (I bought a mouse to feed my skink when I first got my skink but before I could put the mouse in the cage I hesitated and decided to keep him as a pet instead. Pinky only lived a few days before he died suddenly. Most likely due to bad conditions at the store since My skink was also in very poor health when I bought him). Currently I have 1 rabbit 2 dogs 1 hedgehog a blue tongue skink and 5 rats and I prefer the rats EVERYSINGLE TIME over all the other pets. Not just over mice. I hopefully would like to get mice but am very fearful of their life span. Since they seem to live half as long usually.

Thanks
@sivsi6598
@sivsi6598 7 лет назад
Hey there! I'm not RatGirl44, I know, but I'd like to help if I can! I've had anxious/fearful rats in the past, and almost all of them have been able to overcome the fear and anxiety. But first I'd like to say that she will ONLY get worse if you do not get her another friend (or two!). Anxiety is an issue that pops up in rats who live alone (among other behavioral and health issues), so if she was already anxious before, it will get much, much worse as time goes on. And you need to realize that on top of her fear, she's also likely feeling very depressed after her cagemate has passed away, and most rats who are suffering through loss do well with some sort of distraction, in this case new rat friends to help her heal. (Especially if she's not comfortable with handling from you, and cannot gain that sort of comfort from her owner). So bottom line, yes, please please get her a new friend or two. I completely understand the pain of loosing a rattie friend and the desire not to go through it again, but this is an instance where you should put her wellbeing above your own. If you're completely against owning them and thus loosing them again, you could maybe wait long enough to get her settled in with new cagemates and then try to rehome them? Either way, please don't leave her on her own. All that aside, the cause of her anxiety really depends on an individual situation and environment. Rats are generally very social, outgoing creatures, but there are definitely going to be the shy/fearful exceptions. Does her anxiety become present mostly around you? Are her surroundings overwhelming to her? Is she a new rat that is just having a hard time adjusting to her home and everyone in it? Is she just incredibly skittish and easily scared by everything, despite being okay with handling? Or does it appear to be more of a restless distress rather than something typically fearful? There are a lot of reasons why and ways she could be so anxious, and since I don't know really anything about her or her environment, I'll list a few general reasons she might be the way she is, and ways to help her feel better. I currently have three boys, and one of them, Sam, was INCREDIBLY fearful and anxious right from the start. I have never had a rat more scared and anxious as he was, and I honestly thought that I could never get to the point of even being able to touch him. But with a lot of patience (it took him nearly two months to settled down enough to move freely in my presence) and soft words, he finally started to open up. Even so, he was still anxious and very easily startled by movements around him. He's come really far in the past year since I've had him (he'll now let me move around/handle him as I do with my other rats and has actually become very attached to me, though he is still easily startled and doesn't really tolerate anyone else besides my sister and I), and I've learned so much about handling and accommodating fearful and anxious rats. First, make sure her cage is in a quiet room. Rooms with a lot of bustle and noise can be overwhelming to most rats, so a quiet room with little traffic helps rats feel secure in their environment. Another possible cause is her cage. How big is it? Small cages cause stress, and cages with little to play with/explore can also cause restless anxiety. I'm not entirely sure that's the case this time, of course, since it seems like her cagemate didn't have the same anxiety issues? She also likely feels insecure now that her cagemate has passed away and she doesn't have the security and confidence in a friend that she used to. Something else that might be affect her is the way the cage is cleaned and what's put back into it when it's set up again, though it's rare for rats to be affected by this. Anyway, just make sure to add in things that will have familiar smells on them (things that were in her cage previously and might not have been entirely scrubbed off), and make sure to only clean her cage once a week, as doing it any more can cause stress and just isn't really necessary anyway. Whatever the case, make sure to use soothing tones around her and limit the amount of activity that flows around her cage, as well as exposure to new sights/smells for the time being. Keep her surroundings familiar and make sure to pamper her as much as you can, especially just after her cagemate passed away. (Extra treats and cuddle time, if she'll allow). Lots of cozy hiding places in her cage can add a lot of security as well, and gives her plenty of options to hide in. Hammock-y things that fill up the height/free space of a cage is encouraged. And then as I said, a new friend will do wonders and she likely won't get any better without one. If it's more of a stress issue rather than a fear, it'll be up to you to figure out the root of the problem and remove/fix it. Anyway, long ramble on my part, but I hope it helps? c:

Can you please answer my question? Its really important! We're getting a pet rat, but we cant have two, we have much time on our hands and when im at school, my sister will be home because shes not going to school anymore. Ive heard two rats are for company, but if I and my sister keep her/him company. Would that work too?

They need a buddy for grooming and sleeping, don't lick your rat, get them a rat friend instead. 👍

Forensic Forager Aspen is a fairly cheap bedding that's available in most places and online. If you can't do that, shredded newspaper or blank white paper would also work

I have both mice and rats, I hold a special place in my heart for mice..maybe because I have had my first rats a month ago and I've been living with my mice longer. All of my mice are extremely cuddly and tame, I think I'm lucky haha They do smell pretty strong compared to rats, but spot cleaning everyday can make the cage smell less. Also, my mice only pee inside their bath or corner so that makes it all easier. For the moment I found my rats are harder to litter train than my mice..

I currently own 3 rats in a cage together, and I’m thinking of getting gerbils or mice. If I got mice I’d have to let them free roam and I do that with my rats. But the thing is, I’d have to keep them in the same room together I wouldn’t put them in the same cage (obviously😂) or in the cage next to each other but I’m worried that it will scare the life out of the mice because of the smell and being able to see the rats. Also, if I got mice and they free roamed and went up to the front of the rat cage what would happen? I don’t know what to do😬

Actually! Before buying a cage, make sure the bars aren't too far away from each other and that there is extra bar on the doors (they can push through). I bought a regular small rodent cage when I was first getting mice and one of them kept escaping. So not all normal cages are suitable for mice. But depends on how large your mouse is, now I have another, bigger and fluffier mouse in that cage, and he can't escape even if he wanted to. also how is this video 6 years old-

I had three mice and only one left now. After this one passes i really want to get a rat! From this experience my mice have shown to be very smelly so I had to move them into a different room and they were quite timid no matter how hard i tried

Since male mice should live alone, are they less sociable towards humans as well? Is it harder to hand tame male mice?
@melissawilli8756
@melissawilli8756 7 лет назад
RottenRroses it is hard to hand tame mice in general, but males I read and researched are more likely to have a bond with you than the females. Though do keep in mind it will not usually be on the same level of bonding as rats. Mice are skittish by nature. But because males are to live alone they can be more susceptible to wanting a bond because of solitude.

Mice need allot more space than just 1 cubic square inch. I would NOT recommend a pet store cage With toobs. I would recommend a a bin cage or a hade cage. But I am not an expert so dosome more reaserch on mice.

I've had both rats and mice, and I personally prefer rats. I've noticed that rats are much friendlier and enjoy being handled and pet, while mice are a bit more skittish, and less playful.

I had two rats. one just passed away the other day. I noticed that the other one was showing signs of depression. I have searched and searched for another rat and haven't found any. I bought a mouse and put it in with the rat. both are females and right away they seem to be OK. kiwi the rat is very interested in the mouse.

Abby Smith Hello. Thanks for replying to my comment. I have had mice and rats in the same enclosure together. I have seen agressive behavior and am aware of what I'm looking for. I have a 6 foot tall and 4 foot wide enclosure with 5 different levels. at night, I keep them separated. during the day when I can supervise, I let things hang out together. I have seen zero agressive behavior from either. at first Kiwi (Rat) was very curious. Bella (mouse) was a little frightened. After a while they have become friends. I guinea pigs are also socialised with the rat and dog. I would not hesitate to leave them all together alone. The mouse spends a lot of time running on the wheel and I catch all of the others just watching. I have seen the rat and mouse actually bed together. I am maintaining a close eye on them. so far, I have had no issues. After my rats cagemate died, the other became extremely depressed. I watched her in pain. she is now back to her old self and follows the mouse around the enclosure just like old friends. I spend a lot of time with my girls to ensure good behavior and socialization. I must say that I am impressed with how my rat has turned out.
