Here I have a look at the different types of paint that I use in Scale modelling running through Enamel, Acrylic and Lacquers.
I also touch upon the thinners used for each paint including Tamiya x20a, Mr color self leveling thinners and Acrylic and enamel thinners from Humbrol.

Great rundown. I've been confused by the terminology but things have been more or less cleared up now. Thanks!

Excellent informative video, you do a very good job of getting this subject straight for a guy that’s been building for 50 years, but only always used enamels. A genre switch from race cars to armor has led me in a lot of new directions, thanks for the excellent road map.

Excellent overview of the types. I'm tempted to try out MRP with the airbrush but just can't bring myself to spend the extra money and space on a spray booth. The home office is already being over taken by models and paints so I just stick with acrylics and a good face mask for ease of use.

V helpful - thanks. Glad it's not just me that would assume a Tamiya Acrylic thinner would be OK with Mr Colour acrylic. My mantar is to stick with the same brandcoming to all this new. Thanks

Thank You for your video. There is though something You got wrong. Tamiya X and XF line and Mr Hobby aqueous is not a laquer. It is an isopropanol based akrylic. The Mrp, Alclad anf Mr Color is based on laquer thinner and are there for laquers. Laquer thinner is most often a mix containing butyl, acetate, xylene and toulene.
@argento1111
@argento1111 4 года назад
Tamiya XF are "acrylic laquers", its a special group, not a real acrylic, it has the most properties of a laquers.... the same goes to AK Real Colors
@uvafan940

@@argento1111 Tamiya's representatives have been asked this question several times. Their X/XF line does not contain any lacquer. They contain alcohol and water.

Best video on this subject so far as bf I've watched many so thank you. I use Mr Hobby aqueous for brush painting I'm a about to start using an air brush with the same paint. One question wouldn't just adding water slow the drying time just as well as 400 leveling thinner.

As someone who has been using Tamiya acrylic for most of my spraying overtime I’ve noticed that the acrylic paint becomes thick and grainy when it sprays out of the airbrush and drives me nuts. What could be the problem I’m having with these acrylics?
@bollomator
@bollomator Год назад
If it is dry and hot paint dry very fast. Increase pressure and or more thinner and or reduce distance between airbrush and model. Hope that helps

Use Mr Leveling Thinner to thin Humbrol for airbrushing, goes down very nicely and makes it a bit more robust against enamel washes. To be honest I never needed to put down barrier layers for enamel washes on top anyway as long as you leave it long enough to dry.
@arrrgee
@arrrgee 5 лет назад
Is that for the Humbrol acrylics or enamels? I found that it makes humbrol acrylics go all gooey.
@mattperson7293
@mattperson7293 5 лет назад
@@arrrgee Enamels. I've not used the acrylics at all. MLT is a bit "hotter" than enamel thinners I would guess. I can thin the Humbrol enamel finer with MLT and able to use lower air pressure to avoid spidering, it'll spray much like Gunze or MRP.
@arrrgee
@arrrgee 5 лет назад
@@mattperson7293 thanks for letting me know, I'd never thought about using MLT for enamels, I've only used it with a number of acrylics so far. Although I don;t use enamels that often I'll try using MLT on it in future. Thanks.

Well thanks for the tip, I’ve just used it and it worked fantastically, really leveled out the enamel paint and no horrible odor from the enamel thinners 👍

@@ChampionScaleModelling I've had the best results with gloss Humbrol. Seems to dry a little quicker than with enamel thinner, though by no stretch would i call it fast drying, but the small amount of orange peel I might normally get is even less with MLT, better than what I managed with gloss Gunze. I'm really interested in using black gloss with MLT as a base for some AK Extreme Metal - which are enamel but already thinned. The AK black base is okay but it has a very fine orange peel and it's so thin already, the Humbrol gloss has resulted in more glossy finishes.

A Great and informative video I'm new to airbrushing and to be honest its daunting and confusing as to what you should use, and also without damaging your Airbrush and ruining your model. I live in a remote part of the Highlands here in Scotland there are no model stores and everything has to be bought on line!. But! none of the thinners you mentioned especially the more toxic Tamiya lacquer thinners and MR Hobby 400. CAN NOT BE DELIVERED BY ROYAL MAIL! which in my case is frustrating having bought a compressor and H&S CR plus I cannot use it until I can source alternative thinner to use with some Tamiya XF acrylics. And to clean the Airbrush afterwards. you mention using a alternative Lacquer thinner but any suggestions where I might find one and any particular brand here in the U.K please.

For Tamiya just their own one X20a that will thin them and should be able to be posted
@ChampionScaleModelling

Failing that you can even thin Tamiya with water but it’s not ideal

Thank you for the reply, I have managed to buy a bottle of X20A but I presume I can use this to clean my Airbrush with. I can assure you living up here is like living on a another planet but its all part of the learning curve which I'm having to be more patient. 👍😎

Excellent, yes it will clean your airbrush out fine, just don’t let the paint dry in it. Clean it after using and it’ll work fine for you, many great modellers have done fantastic work with just Tamiya paints and X20a 👍

Thankyou I have just subscribed to your channel even though I had been looking at your recent builds, Hope you don't mind but I have another question with the Airbrush cleaning pot do you need to put anything in it before using it I heard to use tap water and fill it half way? or just use the thinner is this correct. The cleaning pot was thrown in with the deal I got with my Airbrush and compressor combined, but no instructions how to use the pot. Thanks again for taking the time to reply.@@ChampionScaleModelling

Tamiya acrylic paints are not lacquer, based and less you get the LP version. They are alcohol-based.

There is no such thing as "proper" acrylics. I know that some people think that acrylics are water based. That's not true. Reducer is not important. As long as you have pigment suspended in acrylic polymer emulsion - it is acrylic paint. And Tamiya and Mr. Hobby are not lacquer based - they are alckohol based or organic acrylics.
