also a helpful hint is a text to speech TTS program. when you listen to your novel and it sounds funky you can edit it.

I’m a senior in high school and I want to go into editing but I find it difficult to figure out which editor does what I want to do. I want to be a developmental editor so thank you for informing me about my potential future career :D

Great video! I watched it twice, and saved it to watch later. I did not know the difference between a line editor and a copy editor--I thought they were the same thing. I always fancied myself a pretty decent editor, but listening to your descriptions, I found that I am a really good line editor because that is what I usually pick up in my and other people's stories. Conversely, I am a piss-poor copy editor lol.

Amazing video, thank you so much!!! I joined a writer's club and it's changed my life, but now people are asking me to 'beta read' their manuscripts/work, and it feels like I'm going crazy. I don't know where to start with suggesting edits, so it really clears up so much to understand the top-down approach to editing a novel. Awesome stuff!

I know this is an old video but, if you are looking for an agent for your book how important is it to get an editor for your book? When you get an agent and they like your book do they then recommend what type of editing you need and who they recommend? I feel like I would need a line editor and copy editor. But, now it just seems to pricey. anywho just wondering thank you:)

Sorry, I know this is an old video, but do you recommend going through developmental edit before or after beta reading?
@ArianefelixWL

I have my critique partners, but I love the feedback of developmental editors. They'll tell you everything, and most of them will read your manuscript twice, write in-line comments, and give you a 5-10 page report. I hired a copyeditor once, and I regret that, because it was super expensive and not necessary. I think copyediting and proofreading editors are only important if you're self-publishing. Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience with different kinds of editors. ;)

Thank you so much for sharing! I think a lot of people feel they can skip the developmental editor so I'm glad you can attest to its importance!

I'm working on getting my novel editing, but I can't find anywhere what exactly Editorial Assessment. Can someone help me out here?
@calebpaddack7450

Help me out here. If the average book sold in the US only moves 3000 copies over its life time then how does any author make money after all those editing fees?
@sharonefee1426
@sharonefee1426 5 лет назад
And what about countires where 3000 is the best dream for an author?
@Avatargeek23
@Avatargeek23 8 лет назад
Gosh! This is going to be expensive. I may just select two editing services versus all of them. I mean, English was always my best subject in school and people have me edit/write their college essays for them all the time. I've never had an issue with grammar, but everyone is prone to mistakes/accidents. The last thing I want, is to have my book out there in the world with grammatical mistakes and typos. 😳 I will likely go with the developmental-editing and proof-reading options for my debut novel and get a few betas in my target audience to critique the story.
@VivienReis
@VivienReis 8 лет назад
Sounds like a plan! Like you said, not every writer *needs* all editing, so shoot for what you're most comfortable with :) Thanks for watching!

Would you have your book edited before giving it to beta readers or after? Could a beta reader be used in place of a developmental editor?

So, right when you finish the first draft what would you do exactly? Can you guys please tell me step by step.
@VivienReis
@VivienReis 8 лет назад
Typically when you're done with your first draft you go through your own edits, which can be one or several passes until it's as good as you can get it on your own. Next comes beta readers, which can be friends/family/strangers who will give constructive feedback on plot holes, character development, awkward or confusing phrasing etc. You then incorporate their suggestions (if you agree with them) and finally it's off to the professional editors!

Joanna Penn has some prices listed in pounds! Not all of them are but she's got a couple: www.thecreativepenn.com/editors/ She's also got great advice on just about any topic if you haven't already found her :)

Vivien Reis Thanks for the reply :) From a quick scan through, I see the average for me is going to be around £700 just for the one look through, not spelling and grammar etc. Yikes!
@VivienReis
@VivienReis 8 лет назад
It can get pretty pricey, but I think it's worth the money to put out the best possible book that I can. But it's up to the individual. Some authors do very well with minimal editing. For my debut, though, I don't want to take chances :) I actually set up a "Writing Fund" savings account a year ago and put a little bit in it each paycheck for these expenses! Makes the sting hurt a little less

This might be a stupid question but it would be more stupid not to ask, right? If you were going to go down the traditional publishing route, would you still aim to go through the four different editors before you sent it off to the publishers? Or would some of this be covered at the publishers end? :/
@VivienReis
@VivienReis 7 лет назад
*If any other viewers are more knowledgeable on the traditional route, please share your tips on this!* Great question! Unfortunately since I'm not going the traditional publishing route, I don't have *too* many tips on this. Lindsay Cummings just started a series about traditional publishing, and she's talking about editing in the next few weeks I believe. From what I understand, polishing your novel as much as possible helps when seeking an agent. From there, it seems the agent helps with polishing your novel even more to pitch it to publishers. While you don't have to go with all four different editors (even if you're self-publishing), it might be beneficial if your novel isn't getting picked up to consider sending your manuscript to an editor. Again, I know very little about this, so keep researching (and maybe check out Lindsay Cummings' videos, and Kim Chance has a few that might touch on this topic as well). Best of luck!

Are all those necessary?
@VivienReis
@VivienReis 8 лет назад
Nope! It depends on what your manuscript really needs. If you have a lot of betas who are really good, they can sometimes replace the need for a developmental editor. If anything you can always have the editor do their sample edit and give their recommendations for what they think your manuscript needs *and* why. It's all up to you and your budget, though! :)

I think i'm going to skip the editors. If my readers point out any thing that annoys them in my writing i'll just fix it in my next Ebook. I can't afford all that editing 😂
