This helped me a ton on understanding light sources. I knew I needed diffused light but thought diffusion was diffusion. Seeing the side-by-sides allowed me to see the softer shadows that proper diffusion could provide. Thanks for putting this together.

Super helpful 👏 I'm in college and I've got to recreate a photo by a famous photographer. And unfortunately I can't rent a DSLR from school like I normally would or proper lighting. Our apartment is small and the natural light doesn't hit out side of the building a whole lot. So I'm thinking of trying both the natural light we have as well as a DIY set up. Can't wait to try out some of these techniques!

This video was incredibly thorough and helped cement those different looks in my head. Thank you! But when you put on the soft box, you moved the light so close to her that it blew her out a bit. The light was much closer than with the other examples. That soft box may drop more stops, but the light could have been much closer to where you had it to begin with. It's hard to make a true comparison to the others when she was so hot.

This is a fantastic video, thanks for making it. I feel like the lightdome was slightly overexposed, taking away detail in the texture of the light. Otherwise great video; I'm currently building myself a set and this is very useful to get started with inexpensive setups.

Interesting, the dome gave the skin tones extra green in them compared to the others...or did they have more magenta, or was it just a white balance thing? 4x4 won for my taste.

Can I use the diffusion layer on a 5 in 1 set? The collapsible one that has silver, white, gold, black and diffusion? Or is it different materials for photography and video?

... so how close do we place our makeshift diffuser ? The closer to the light source (skin to skin touching) the better or as far as possible ?

What I noticed the most was seeing how your choice of diffusion material affects not just the quality of light, but the subjects SKIN TONE as well. Some materials made the woman warmer while others had a cooler effect. Good that I know now 👍

Hi guys. I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to light a 2 camera shoot on a stationary RU-vid style set that includes myself as the host (being shot with a Logitech Brio) and my hands holding and shuffling playing cards on a black felt poker table. I can get the light perfect on my face, but the cards get blown out. If I get the light perfect on the cards, my face isn't lit well. any thoughts? I have available 2 Neewer ML 480's, 2 desktop Neewer LED Phot/Video lights and an entire LZ light kit that I'm trying not to open! I also have a couple ring lights. Please help! I can send a shot of what I'm up against if that helps.

@2:07 -You showed the example when diffused via a large source. But you didnt tell us if you cranked up ISO or opened aperture ;) etc. Because as much as diffusing to a large source is great, it eats the light intensity like hell. And before you know it, your underexposed.

200isnt cheap for any budget. It's only cheap for professionals who can write that off tax. However. I use a dust cover that's 2 bucks. And use my ceiling panels to clip in between the panels to hold the sheet in place. Does the same thing
