So nice to add Roy Ayers to the collection...he always comes with that laid back, yet funky sound on the vibes in the 70's...only ever had the Ubiquity album myself, just do not see his records around here. Never heard of the middle two, terrific funky sets as well. Strut put out 2 fantastic compilations on the Disques DEBS label that I have on CD. I have the Superfly TNT on vinyl, ok but not as good as the regular Osibisa albums as I recall. Enjoy and take care!

Hi Doug! I'm always on the look out for Roy Ayers albums. As you say very hard to find in the wild. Which is a bit puzzling, are not many pressed, or didn't they sell well. Just looked on-line for some info on the Strut compilation. Never realized they did a special on the Disque Debs Label. Osibisa really tried to do something different with the soundtrack. Maybe not 100% successful experiment, still I like the end result. Hope the cold it starting to leave and you can see spring around the corner. Overhere the season is starting to change to better times :) All the best. Cheers. /Paul

Good morning Paul. Good to see you. Funny. I was just listening to the Roy Ayers 'Coffy' soundtrack. Looks like the Milestone album came all the way from St Louis. I liked the sample of the song Caroline. Nice and upbeat. Great background vocals. Super Fly T.N.T. is one that we never see shown. It is usually Super Fly. Which was a big staple in the VC ten, eleven and twelve years ago. So you are digging T.T.T.? Enjoyable update Paul. No surprise there. Have a super week. Hope the temps are not in the twenties like they are here today. Only 34 days until this winter takes a backseat to the spring~ Rob/Boston

Hi Rob! Some Roy Ayers in the morning is a nice way to wake up :) It would be fun if we knew how these records travelled from place to place, to finally arrive at your home. The Milestone record for sure must have travelled some miles before it got here. We had a cold period over here, but it was too short for the ice to get thick enough for some ice skating on natural ice. At the moment it seems nature says spring is around the corner. Everywhere spring crocus are appearing in beautiful colors. All the best. Cheers. /Paul

Hi Paul. I only have the Julius Brockington record from that lot. I should really pick up Superfly TNT as I do like a blaxploitation soundtrack. Next time I see it, I’ll grab it. Never see that Roy Ayers. Very cool. Cheers

Hey John! The music on Superfly TNT is right between an Osibisa album and a blaxploitation album. Some say it is neither ;) I also hardly ever see any of the early Roy Ayers albums, I though you got them before me, seems someone else is quicker as us :) Have a great weekend. Cheers. /Paul

When it comes to Jazz or Funk I prefer the Fender Rhodes. The second track is my favorite. I think the album is I’m Cool. I didn’t catch the artist. Something like Francois Nombo.
@XjunkieNL
@XjunkieNL 4 месяца назад
Hi Richie! The Rhodes is part of so many classic funky jazzy records. Often the sound of the Rhodes makes the song. Have you ever thought about getting one? Just to be able to hit a key a and produce that analog sound? At one point I check the pricing, and just as with records I'm a decade too late to purchase ;) All the best. Cheers. /Paul

'caroline' off of the milestones album even seems to have some dubbed out ska influences in there somewhere. intredasting.

Hi! The Milestone record is a nice melting pot of latin, afro, funk, soul and reggae influences. One song on the B-side is called "Funky Reggae" :) Fun to see you picked up on this immediately with the song "Caroline". Have a great weekend. /Paul

i think one's ears easily pick up on thing they're adapted to. discovering jungle early - a.k.a. when it just emerged - and following many derivatives of what once was described as "the 'ardcore continuum" which basically subsumes all sorts of british bass music with roots and heritage in jamaican sound system culture plus having a general affinity for dub and certain dub fx made me quite susceptible to the slightest hints of dub and reggae, even in an unexpected context. @@XjunkieNL

Your answer make me think of the enormous impact of Jamaican sound systems on music. I wouldn't be surprised if the Milestone album main ingredient comes from there. Never realised this, as I was coming from Afro side ;) /Paul

there's a direct lineage that can be traced from ska and lovers rock via breakbeat hardcore, jungle, drum'n'bass, uk garage, grime, dubstep, speedhall and partially even breakcore / raggacore as a lot of the latter employ reggae / ragga / dancehall samples. then you've got mark ernestus and the likes of who first applied dub techniques to techno production and laid the foundation for what was to become dubtechno as a genre later with basic channel, rhythm & sound, maurizio and the likes of. on the other hand there's the whole influence on the (post)punk scene with acts like blondie, vivien goldman and even the clash amongst many others drawing elements from sound system culture. plus: folks like adrian sherwood and his on-u soundsystem took those influences to obscure industrial infused crossover music but also brought their ideas to the pop world with remixes and production for gary clail and the likes of. the list is endless. @@XjunkieNL
