One of the hidden gems of enjoyable information on RU-vid. Get to not only see these animals and how to set up enclosures for them and care for them, but also see them out in their natural habitat. And let’s be real, there aren’t many people in the whole world who so passively handle centipedes, scorpions, spiders, etc. He gets bit and he’s usually just like…oh well. 😄 Love it.

aaaah im in love with your films!! you cut out all of the fat and you have the perfect blend of scientific terminology and layman terms! your passion for critters is genuinely inspiring. when i was a kid, i imagined my adult life just like yours in these videos - studying insects and just hanging out with them. eventually i went into filmmaking but my love for insects still persists. cheers!

00:58 That’s what those are! I found one of these in the sagebrush desert in NV and have been tying to figure out what built it! Thank you! This video cleared up so many questions I had about the critters I grew up catching on Mt. Tamalpais in CA. I used to think those false tarantulas were wolf spiders. Used to get them in our house as the time. (Can confirm their aggression lol).

I was checking out one of my new videos for comments and came across this video of yours. I have been hunting spiders for a long time (I live in Michigan) but have never come across a trap door spider of any kind! lol. How do you even spot them, the camouflaged ground caps are so amazing. We have some here in the woods and beaches of lake Michigan, but no luck for me as of yet. Love your stuff, and your handling of the scientific names of the critters you hunt and encounter. Thanks for your hunt today, knowledge and sharing the fun with us! Have a great weekend.
@GeneralApathy
@GeneralApathy Год назад
Thank you very much, Bob. There are specific microhabitats to search for their burrows, but aside from that, it just took me many years to train my eyes to recognize the doors. It is no easy task when just starting out. I wish you much luck. :D

@@GeneralApathy Thx for the response! Yes I well know what you're saying here! The trained eye for enjoying nature (as well as extreme patience for just being still and watching) are tools the nature enthusiast develops over time! You see things others just walk right on by. 2023 I shall FIND some trap door spiders in Michigan! If you are interested I just posted a new vid on the tiny Trashline Orbweaver. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QREksWPfHIo.html Had a bit of fun doing an Alfred Hitchcock intro. lol Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The biggest spider I ever saw in person was a jet black trap door spider that was just out and about bumbling around. Shit blew my mind. I did not know they lived in my area. Edit: I think it was actually a false tarantula.

Funnel-web spiders in the family Atracidae have medically significant venom. These trapdoor spiders have relatively mild venom.
