Looking for two more morphs of the Mediterranean Giant Banded Centipede, Scolopendra cingulata:
1. Light + red legs
2. Dark + red/orange legs
Yet again, when I say "normal" I am (erroneously) referring to the light green form.

You have a good eye, some of the insects you spot are nearly un-spottable. Probably a pretty helpful skill for a researcher. Greatly appreciate the type of videos you make, very informative, you cover animals often overlooked, and you let the animals be interesting on their own, no need to exaggerate things that are already amazing with extra theatrics (which have their place for garnering more attention, just not my thing). Plus staying calm/respectful of commonly feared/potentially dangerous animals is a good way to help people see that they aren't evil monsters, just another organism we share the planet with. Long way of saying thank you!

I know you’re referring to centipedes in general, but the species in this video happens to be the only exotic Scolopendra I own at the moment. :D

I once in a while encounter these under rocks in mallorca when herping, I always let them be cause I learned scolopendrae lived in South europe, and that they thus are scolopendrae and I think they are venemous and dangerous bite, seeying you picking them up, are they?

2:56 Thinking Messor spp. Not too keen on European species, (maybe one would like to chime in?), but it somewhat matches. Granivorous, subsisting off seeds they collect and store in big piles. Would explain why they don't hunt the pede. Also impossible to get to species level without a microscope, an actually good key, and a fair bit of guess work. Nice nonetheless, they're one of the better European genuses. That being said most species would only try to kill and eat a Scolopendra once they've reached a very big colony size.

I didn’t think that the ants were capable of subduing the centipede (had they been carnivorous), it’s just that I’ve seen ants attack other creatures sharing the same cover many times in the past, even in groups way too small to cause any harm. Also, sometimes I find arthropods with a single ant latched onto a leg. I know many species are capable of forming large groups to overpower prey, but it often looks like a few ants just made a miscalculation after observing them for a while. Thank you for your expertise as always.

@@GeneralApathy Yeah that makes sense. Worker ants (and even founding queens) will often try to pick fights with things they know they can't defeat in order to protect their nest. I just think it would be good for you to know that with very few exceptions a small colony rarely poses a threat to most "big" athropods. With that being said, nice vid and happy inverting(?) (we call searching for ants anting).

@@mazmurlo9283 You too. I just call it herping even if that’s incorrect usage. I don’t use the term on this channel as to avoid confusing viewers. :)

Although pretty big and scary, the word "giant" doesn't come to mind, especially when you've seen the real GIANT CENTIPEDES, who are freaking wayyy too huge in my opinion.
