Hello my friends. Since a couple of you guys asked me for a Comparison between the Elektron Digitakt and the Roland TR-8S i wanna go through a couple of things to show you how these two Machines differ from each other. We will focus on Sample Import, Sequencing and Motion Sequences (Automation / Parameter Locking), Effects and a couple of other things.
Like i've mentioned in the Video: I dont go through each and every aspect just yet! This would take too much time, because they really differ quite a bit. But i hope that the Topics mentioned here already give you a headsup about the things that help you decide between one or another.
If you like this Video, tell me about it, will ya?! And also: Dont forget to leave me a like if you enjoyed this Video. Until then: I see you in my next Video!
All the best,
umonox

This Video is all about the Feature Comparison between both Machines. Samples therefore differ between the two. If you rather want a side-by-side Sound Comparison - using the same Samples on both Machines - check out the following Video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WPFhDgBjwpAI.htmlt is solely about that topic! Cheers

John Lohr I had a similar conundrum, I was looking at the TR8S, MPC Live, Digitakt, and Deluge trying to find the best drum and sampling combo for myself. I have plenty of synths so that was less of a consideration. I went with the TR8S and Deluge. It was a good choice for me.

I just sold my Digitakt after two years of use, I really did enjoy that unit. I had sold my TR-8s to get the Digitakt, used and loved the Digi immensely... But, for what ever reason, it really started to bore me, so, I sold the Digitakt and got a ne TR-8s! LOL. I use a MPC One along with my TR-8s now, excellent set up now.

it's a shame the Digitakt dose not have different delay & reverb type ... & and SD car ... An extra line out would be awesome as well .... the TR8s has More FX (type ) but sadly it's more limited . great video thank

p-locks on the TR8S: after a p-lock you only have to change the next step to it's default value, and it will stay there. not all steps.

On Roland You can set FX send levels for each instrument a little bit faster, no need to go to the menu. Just turn reverb or delay level knob while holding instrument button which level You want to change.

I have both boxes and purely use the TR-8S for all the Roland drum goodness (with effects) and use the Digitakt for samples. They work great together. I'd say the biggest edge the Roland has is the ease of use (and stereo samples). It's easy to jump into the TR-8S and start performing. Digitakt...well, lets just say I've watched a LOT of videos to grasp how it functions. I'm not sure I really dig how Elektron workflow goes. I love Analog Heat, but get frustrated with Digitakt. So much so I don't even consider the Digitone. I'm also irritated that we are still waiting for Overbridge for Digitakt--a function that was advertised with it on release.
@umonox
@umonox 6 лет назад
Yep, Workflow is not too obvious on the Digi in the first place, but its really not hard getting into it. If you have trouble with the Digitakt already, NEVER ever try out the Octatrack :-D Its workflow is at least 10 times as complicated because it has so much more under the hood. Assiging Samples involves some extra Steps on the Digi, yeah. But thats mostly because you do not have to load the Samples to the Project in the first place. Which is actually an advantage! You go into your library, preview the Samples and load just what you need. The TR8s forces you to load everything which fills up the RAM in no time since you dont have nearly as much space as necessary. No preview available here. But if you sort your library in advance, its then much easier assigning these Samples to the Tracks on the TR8s because you can stay inside that Menu topic and do all the tracks in a row. I still like the Elektron approach much more. Its memory efficient and doesnt clutter your Project with unneccessary stuff you never use.

Good morning humonox, congratulations on your videos. A question. When Octatrack is in sync with the other elektron machines the swing parameter is automatically sent?
@umonox
@umonox 6 лет назад
Hi :-) Swing is not sent via Sync because Swing is an Alternation of the Pattern Timing and not a Clock thing ;-) When you drive something with the MIDI-Tracks from the OT, Swing is obviously applied if you have it set, because in that case you send actual Notes. But in a regular Sync Setup, you only get the Clock and Transport Data sent - and nothing more. You have to set Swing on the other Machines Sequencer.

The problem I am having for now, is that the Velocity-sensitive pad would have been more useful to get the kind of fast/multi-notes convoluted rhythmical beats I want to get out of an instrument, but when I use this, the playback doesn't get replicated as such, instead it plays back in single-notes non-fast-rhythmical pace, that is unintended. It appears that this problem I am experiencing is related to perhaps tempo setting issue?, or perhaps only achievable using sub steps and flams?. Any hints/tips appreciated.
@umonox
@umonox 5 лет назад
Noticed the same. Fast triggers arent recognized. I havent talked about that Pad in general because i didnt found it worth mentioning. For me it felt like its really only for live recording of simple Notes with Velocity or velocity-enabled Preview of Sounds. And on top of that, its not as responsive as it should be - to really be useful. So: Nothing spectacular, nothing to bother.
@michaelolaleye5215
@michaelolaleye5215 5 лет назад
@@umonox Thanks for your reply. I acted on someone else's suggestion and it worked with lots of tweaking to get the result required: turn substep on and hit the insta/velocity pad as required (some tweaking of substep settings may be necessary) and it produces fast trigger patterns and multiple rhythms/hits per step/note

Digitakt is obviously more flexible and you can create far more variation on it. Ctrl all is extremely powerful when creating new ideas and takes the pattern to a new dimension quickly. The tr-8s is great for live situations with it’s straight forward controls. I’d definitely use it in a very basic way when playing live… mess with envelopes, volume and effects. Both are great machines and I wish I had them both

@spiderlab2526
@spiderlab2526 4 года назад
Well it's easy. Ditch them both for a Deluge :-) However I will be getting a smaller drum machine, probably a DrumBrute impact, to complement the Deluge in live performance. In a studio situation the slow workflow of the Digitakt is not a problem and it may shine but live the TR8s wins easily. I grew up with Roland (had my first TR-606 in 1983) and I think that simple interface design has been maintained and then becomes an important feature. When performing the big picture is critical and the details can wait. For both do your sound design well before the gig.

roland vs elektron; both known for great sound quality. but how much time will it take to make a song on either of these two devices. making music means being efficient with your time. most people don't have time. the one that takes the less time to do the same thing wins. you should do a video similar to this one only make a split screen of you building the same song on both devices and seeing which one is literally quicker like a time trial song builder video.

Now this sounds like a great idea!! I'm sure the TR will win... I own an Analog Keys and its menu diving requires scuba gear... The Digitakt is less deep, but still Elektron knows how to make things harsh...
@lwpweb

on the elektron maschines it is not possible to change samples on the fly during live performance which is a big big advantige on the tr6/6 series. ON the tr series you can f.e. turn the knob on kicks to get the idea which is the best kick in the mix in fraction of a second. Extreme usefull when playing percussion turning the knob through 100ds of percussion sounds.. This why i love my tr6s. because of its speed changing samples.

My next questions: 1st: Can I record a keyboard/guitar input connected to the TR8S as an instrument into one of the variation banks (A-H). If so how? 2nd: Can one vary tempo level or have individual tempo levels for each input/instrument recorded into variation banks (A-H). If so how? Thanks
@umonox

1st: No! The TR8s isnt a Sampler. The Digitakt can do this. 2nd: Dunno :-) Havent tried this out. You can have different Track Lengths, but whether you have different Tempi for each Variation or not - idk :-)

Could be the Samples i've used. They are different on both machines. But yeah, the Digitakt has a certain Tone to it, for sure. The TR-8S just plays the Samples back. It has its Tone in the ACB-Engines - which i havent touched here since the Digitakt doesnt have Synth Engines.

I agree the Digitakt sounds like it has more life. I do wish the same samples were the same for both machines. Would of only made sense for a fair comparison don't you think? And wow the digtakt is so much smaller. I did consider getting a TR-8S to pair with my digitakt but it literally sounds flat and lifeless imho. I'll be waiting for the behringer 808 for my next drum machine.
@telkmx
@telkmx 6 лет назад
lol wat dude. The tr8s sound flat and lifeless ? You wouldnt notice the difference in a side by side comparison with no video of the og 808 and the tr8s A sample is a sample. The fact that digitakt change a bit the samples is not a nice thing because you just have to deal with the "flavor" they put onto it. The digitakt isnt flat and that's not what i want in the studio. It's cool but i can add flavor myself. I love the digitakt tho. Wish there was some way to use it with my computer kekek

Can't we use a master effect on the digitakt by holding down 'track' and and changing parameters on all tracks at once?
@umonox
@umonox 6 лет назад
This is not a Master Effect. This is CTRL-ALL and it changes one Parameter for all Tracks at once. You would have to reload the Pattern to revert back to normal once youre done - and if you forgot to save a Temp-Pattern you mess everything up quite easily. Its not comparable to a traditional Master Effect like the one found on the TR-8s.

There really arent many difference in sounds when you play the samples. The digitakt is known to be less precise because they have some sort of eq on the master. It's not by far tho. They are different beast. Digitakt is less immediate for sure. But can go deeper with mangling. If you need a cool jamming drum machine which can integrate in the studio the tr8s is dope If you need an experimentation drum machine go with the digitakt

I’m really surprised by the huge price difference between the two... okay so everyone who is anyone knows about the extreme build quality behind Elektron products, fair enough. But Roland themselves are no slouches when it comes to putting solid build alongside a usually gorgeous looking bit of sexy ass tech. Both companies have got it nailed down in the rhythm construction area of sound design... both use completely different ways of obtaining the desired results making them so similar yet so different. Roland sticks with the easy to navigate, “know your way around one model, know your way around them all” design - no complaints there, hence why they’re up there amongst the best of the best hardware designers. Elektron, okay slightly different than the usual Elektron layout however, they really have nailed the workflow with this bit of kit. It takes a while to get used to working this way but when you do, it’s a breeze to Whizz around doing whatever it is you’re working on. In the end, the Digitakt feels limited to start but damn, it plays like it was manufactured by the hardware gods themselves. Two models, similar jobs, both highly respected companies with great sound - BUT... so Elektron are known for the materials used as end pricing never holds them back. Roland, although tried to keep it within a price range making it available to both newcomers and veterans alike. Still though, why - why is the price gap so massive. I paid almost €600 for the Digitakt having pre-ordered it - and got a cool carrying case, a ton of additional free samples and a nice stand thing - Roland, I got one online - albeit “second hand although it had never been used, never been out of the box - for €175 - MORE THAN 3 TIMES AS CHEAP... Even now, the Roland, brand new and the Digitakt no so new anymore, costs less than half the price. I don’t get it - IMO I prefer the Digitakt for its ease of use and speed of workflow using it - plus the unit itself is mind-numbing fast- but does it justify costing double. I’m not so sure. I like them both - the Digitakt however, I just love... it’s just the price seems way too high. Both awesome though - glad I bought both because if I had to choose one, I’d be here for days.
@umonox
@umonox 6 лет назад
175 € used? You speak about the TR-8 right? The Digitakt is cheaper than the TR-8s! TR-8s is 688 € and Digitakt is 640 € at the moment. And apart from the much better built quality of the Digitakt (i have/had them both so i can directly compare this!) the Digitakt is definitely much more versatile - as it has the much better workflow (like you said) and is also able to Sample / Resample. It has more memory and a much better Sample Management. I like the Effects from the TR-8s, for sure! But its Sequencer is really limited compared to the Elektron machines and being able to Motion Sequence just 3 Parameters of a single Track on that TR-8s is pointless and doesnt nearly justify the high price for this machine!

PRESET SAMPLE: 300 tones or greater USER SAMPLE (imported form SD CARD for playback): Available format: WAV, AIFF Total time for all samples: Approximately 600 sec (at 44.1 kHz, mono) * The maximum length of a single audio file that can be imported is approximately 180 seconds (at 44.1 kHz). so does that mean ALL samples time is 600 seconds....and max import is 180 seconds..so i guess that user ram = 180 seconds and preset samples take up are 420 seconds...their specs can be a bit vague! user sample time on digitakt is 30 seconds i believe
@umonox
@umonox 6 лет назад
What they write in their manual is pure theory. In reality i take a bunch of Samples and load them - thats it. Sample time is irrelevant for me, what matters is that i get my Samples on the Machine. Megabytes therefore count! And as you've seen in the Video: It doesnt take that much to fill up the memory on that TR8s. On the Digitakt, there is a maximum Recording Time of 33 seconds. This is what the recorder holds. The Samples you put on it can be as long as you want - for as long as they fit in the internal Memory. And they always fit, i never had issues! Also: On the Digitakt you can preview the Samples before you import them. So you always have a much more effective Memory Utilization since you only load to the Project what you really need. On the TR8s that very Preview from the SD Card is missing. So you always have to import everything, no matter if you need it or not. Add the very limited Sample Memory to that and you get the idea. Its really a pain in the ass! Check out my recent Walkthrough Video with the TR8s. In the Section about Sample Management i also show another bad thing in that respect: You have to delete Samples one by one if you want to start fresh. Guess how much work you have to free up the memory for another Sample Import if youve imported like 100+ Samples ^^ This is ridicoulus.

This is stupid. One is a drum machine. One is a grove box. You should have compared the Digitakt to the MC-707. This is the equivalent of comparing Abelton to a pair of CDJ’s and a DJM.
