Ever try painting like a sculptor or drawing like a painter? This may sound unintuitive, but thinking in large blocks of shape and tone will help you develop the forms to look more real and natural. Subscribe to Proko: bit.ly/SubProko
In this critique, we will watch one of our student's digital process videos and review where they can improve in their work. Court will show you his technique for developing a quick digital caricature portrait and talk about how to think when painting to make an appealing image.

A good way to practice this tonal technique is with a pencil held on it's side instead of using the point. That way you can make large strokes, and if you draw light enough you can erase it away to the light of the paper. It's very similar to painting with dark and light paint. It works better with a harder pencil like a H or 2H grade, because it's more easily erasable than a darker pencil grade like a 4B or 6B. Another good way is to sharpen a pencil to a long sharp point, but then wear it down on a piece of sand paper so you get a blunt chisel like tip. With that you can draw soft, wide strokes that are easily erasable.
@RobertF-
@RobertF- 6 лет назад
NasTreeEels, right, but if you draw very lightly, and use a blunt tip instead of a sharp tip with those two techniques I mentioned, and especially if you use a hard grade graphite, you will be able to completely erase the graphite away and shape the tonal mass with an eraser.

I’ve been doing digital painting off and on for many years, along with traditional now and then, and I’ve noticed I’m much better at going right in and painting. Sometimes I do an initial sketch first, but I feel like my work turns out better when I just paint.

you make it look so easy. i thought Nick Nelson's Defoe was really well done and then you jumped in on the crit and WOW!!!. especially the eyes. so many little subtle things made your eyes look so solid. i am not even close to being able to do this but having a great time on the PREMIUM CARICATURE course. one thing i would love to know more are your settings with the brush(es), and short cuts you use. and, btw, thank you robert (below) on your comment.
@CourtJones
@CourtJones 6 лет назад
Thanks, Andy. I can't remember what that brush was originally called. It was one of the standard PS brushes. It just had a number assigned to it. 24 I think. As I mentioned in the tutorial, I just turned on Opacity Jitter and saved it as a new brush. The exact brush isn't important. Just experiment until you find one that works for you. In the premium version of the digital paint sketching lesson, I go over how to customize your brush settings for the best effect. When working on a painting, there are a few helpful keyboard shortcuts to know, like 'B' for brush and 'E' for eraser. But mostly, I just toggle the brush into a color sampling eyedropper tool as needed by holding down Alt/Opt.

I have so much trouble with values and picturing where the lights and darks fall on my drawings. It's really depressing because even though I've watched so many tutorials I'm still having trouble. Is it because I haven't learned to observe things in the real world as much as I should? I guess I need to keep practicing...

Hi Proko people, Loved the video! Question: Which would be the best traditional media to aproach this whole drawing like a sculptor technique? This channel rocks! Saludos desde Argentina!!
@CourtJones
@CourtJones 6 лет назад
If you are interested in drawing/dry media, I would suggest a charcoal pencil sharpened to a long point so you can use it on its side. On smooth grade newsprint. Check out one of the earlier Proko videos Stan made on how to sharpen pencils. And for painting, personally, I love alla prima oil painting because it's very similar to this method of digital painting. But if you don't want to jump into that, gouache is a great way to get into painting because it teaches you how to use controlled strokes and color tiling. It can be used full strength with full opacity or thinned down with water for a watercolor effect.

Yes, definitely! But working with full color adds an additional variable to worry about. When just trying to find the likeness, I prefer to work in black and white so I can focus on that. But try doing it in color if you are comfortable with it!

I honestly couldnt tel this was Willem Defoe in the finished picture. The nose is way too small and the space between nose and mouth is huge. I get it's supposed to be a caricature, but it would probably be more adequate to exagerate features rather than making them up. However, great approach in concern to technique!

Good concept but sculptors dont paint they model or rather sculpt... painting suggest color😎
@JonathanChenentercreativeurl
@JonathanChenentercreativeurl 6 лет назад
Los Idealistas_canal surprisingly, color is the least important thing in painting. Values, form, and light come first, so the comparison does hold.
@canalcerrado2433
@canalcerrado2433 6 лет назад
Jonathan Chen true , but what makes a painter and differentiates him from a sculptor is color, color is part of what we see as painters and while the other concepts help you see better , at the end we have to deal with color head on. To me color is more important than those other aspects of painting...without color you cant call yourself a painter ☺️
@JonathanChenentercreativeurl
@JonathanChenentercreativeurl 6 лет назад
I think color is like a filter, and that it can't capture a scene on its own. (would you call a colorblind artist a painter?) i think the main difference is that sculpting is 3d and painting is an illusion of 3d in 2d. Do you mean that painting by *definition* uses color, or that color in paintings adds appeal that you can't get anywhere else? marco bucci kind of explains my thoughts well in his color harmony video at the end, so id like to know your thoughts in more depth.
