This is one of the most impressive songs I've ever heard... Storytelling art at its best! If #dimashkudaibergen is singing in his mother tongue it's more of all. More meaning, more expressions, more spark, more head cinema... Samaltau is pure tragedy, a history lesson about the Kazakh people nearly being wiped out at the beginning of the 20th century... Thank you for your reaction, really appreciated ❤️❤️
Hello instrument is name Kobyz (Kazakh: қобыз, Qobyz) or kyl-kobyz is an ancient Kazakh string instrument. It has two strings made of horsehair. The resonating cavity is usually covered with goat leather. According to legends, the kobyz and its music could banish evil spirits, sicknesses and death and imitate animal voices and bells of cattle herds of Kazakhstan steppe. Here sounds realy like a wolf :) THANK YOU so much for the reaction. I love this song, and Dimash is absolutely amazing!! This song about Kazahstan , " Samaltau" means montain of wind....and a song is about a walks death moan soldier during de 1ª mundial war that miss his home land ( Samal Moutains)and his parents...
The instrument is "Kobyz" producing animals sounds along with sounds of flowing water, wind, bells from cattle herds from the great Steppes of Kazakhstan🇰🇿. Thank you.
Hi Caleb You are right. Even without any big vocal acrobatics, he has completely captivated us by portraying the emotions that are conveyed in the song. The cracks at certain places, the cry in those runs is just haunting!!! I just wanted him to keep on singing.
Glad you enjoyed the video and learnt! Wow that is so interesting, about how the instruments were making those sounds. It makes a lot of sense now that you say it!
Samal Tau is an old historical folk Kazakh song and tells the story from First World War. The name of the author is not known. Kazakhstan was at that time part of Russian empire. The Russian Tsar issues a decree the draft of Kazakhs aged 19-39 years for the army. Samal Tau is the song of these recruits. The place where they came from was called "Samal Tau" in the North Kazakhstan region. The song contains the words: “We wander tired, very tired for 15 days, almost reached Omsk. Samal Tau, where I was born and raised, was left behind. Elderly parents stayed at home. How are they supposed to live without me? ". The song also has information about the age of the author. He is a little over two mushels old. He was born in the year of the cow, which means in 1888, so he is 28 years old. The instrument's name is Kobyz (Kazakh: қобыз, Qobyz) or kyl-kobyz and is an ancient Kazakh string instrument. It has two strings made of horsehair. The resonating cavity is usually covered with goat leather. According to legends, the kobyz and its music could banish evil spirits, sicknesses and death and imitate animal voices and bells of cattle herds of Kazakhstan steppe. In this song it really sounds like a wolf.
I like your reactions to Dimash, they are so good. You are not only trying to react to his vocal techniques during the song, but also try to comprehend the song fully with its story and emotions. I have never been a fan before, have never thought that I could be so much involved in someone's music, but he captured me totally, now I can't imagine my one day without his music. I am Kazakh, so of course I am proud that he is making so many people learn our history and culture. When he sings in Kazakh, it's definite that he is more confident, his tone changes, his voice seems more powerful, you know. I liked you cover of S.O.S, I think, Screaming would be awesome as well. Your reactions are worth seeing and spending time. Thanks a lot! Have you reacted to Passione? It's rather interesting, waiting for your reactions 👍👍👍
Thank you so much :) You must be so proud of Dimash and how well he shows your culture. This song is so good, I hope to hear more traditional Kazakh songs :)
@@CalebColesMusic oh Caleb hahaha, last night Dimash writes in his Instagram account that he dreams about exclusively releasing a full Kazakh folk songs and asks his fans if they're interested, of course everybody says yes 🤩🤩🤩
Dear Caleb, hi!!! The great reaction as usual!!! Did you notice that Kobyz, the musical instrument used in this song, sounds like the strong wind or as if it is a wolf voice. This song is very tragic and Dimash of course made it as a new hit!
I noticed the imitation of wolf cries IMMEDIATELY haha. And with just music I pictured in my mind a scene that describes the fallout, blood and sorrow (the sound of dying horses too) after a fierce battle. All of this before the lyrics started! Amazing.
💓💓💓....gosh I feel like it's such a raw, emotional and native song ...full of heart, history and cry! Dimash's voice ( to me) is so so full of story telling and you sense his kazakh-heart deeply! I have seen another version with more accuate translation. This auto-trans. ( I am sorry : ) ) ...but really sucks! Thx for another great reaction! 💓💓💓
A team with the USA Fan Club has done the real translations, to English, Chinese and French, which have been submitted to Dimash's official channel. It's under review now. Hopefully the subtitles will be approved soon.

@@wintersweeter Kudos to the USA Fan Club. Now, I add English subtitles to my collection of Dimash videos. Not saying my translations are perfect, but I'm meticulous about details. What I love about Di is how he delivers the lyrics. So if he's pouring his heart out, the subs should reflect that. In his Kazakh song "Makhabbat ber maghan" titled "Give me love", part of the chorus says "Mahabbat ber maghan, taghdyr". The last world means fate or destiny. "O destiny, give me (or grant me) love" sounds and looks good. But that sentence should end with "destiny" to reflect Di's pleading. So you restructure that to "Give me love, O destiny". Kind of poetic but easily understandable.
Looking forward to you doing another Dimash song. Samal Tau is a folk song. You can find English lyrics on my website: dimash.nl Greetings from Amsterdam.
I think you're my favourite reaction channel cuz usually people just comment on his techniques but you do that and analyse the meaning in his singing as well, like the emotions and lyrics so thanks so much for doing these!
Yeah, I remember that part in "sinful passion" too, you're right. After I started listening to Dimash, I really fell in love with Oriental music :) Сan't wait to see your cover!!!

Samaltau - relevant at all times when a person leaves his homeland, relatives and goes into the unknown. When he defends his land, he understands what he is fighting for and scary when he does not understand why and why? It was in the past, ongoing now. There are wars, and now they are taking into the unknown! Therefore, this song is understandable to everyone and touches the souls! Take care of human life, you didn’t give it this life! That's what Dimash sings about!
Excellent reaction, what i love also about Dimash is he is not get shay from his origins he is a excellent ambassador to his country, most singer's how get famous tand to sing in english and just fallow the trance, not him 😍👍
The more I listen to Dimash I am thrilled when he creates those Eastern runs. They are so beautiful, free flowing. Amazing production. 😌😌😌😌😌. Another terrific review.
Caleb, I saw another video where the translation is more like the lyrics, this one is not close..you were very observant. I love these East-like melismas, as you said, in Sinful Passion Dimash wears and looks beautiful. Just like Daididau, this Salmatau folk song is beautiful too: May Dimash always give us these jewels. It also enchanted me in Dimash's voice. Caleb, I think Salmatau would look great in your voice, because of the notes you released at the end ... think about it ... Great reaction to this song and wonderful vocals from the great DIMASH. HUGS BRAZIL
Marileia, I'm so pleased to see that someone besides myself uses the word "melismas." Sometimes I've felt people looking at me very oddly, and trying to correct me, when I use that word. I think it suits the sound very well.
@@hollyhelmstetter5156 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OOqOMd4sn6E.html - Holly, I honestly don't know if it's right either, but if I'm wrong and someone who understands music, explain, I'm happy to learn. I read on youtube that black Americans are great at melismas, because they learned from Arabes, the Arab scales, when black arrived in America. I found it interesting ... I've seen in the comments say vocalizes, solfegos ... but thanks for feeling my partner, let's learn on behalf of the music of Dimash .. but I find beautiful when Dimash does the Arabe style. I sent a link to you from Dimash singing Late Autumn in China at a concert and he does this technique before he started singing, it was beautiful ... watch..Hugs BRAZIL
This song, as you said, takes you to dimash homeland, is a complete experience I really love it from start to finish and the stage is awesome as well. Cant wait for your cover of dimash Screaming since I really loved the SOS cover
I knew that you will love Samaltau, Caleb!!! Thank you for your wonderful reactions as always...,🤗🤗...for next, please react to Dimash's Passione...you will love it too...greetings from sunny Indonesia! 😁😁😁
Hello, dear! Thank you! Искренне, от души! Было бы интересно услышать Ваш кавер на эту песню. Может, попробуете, а? Я думаю, у Вас получится. Стали бы нашим народным героем! 😊😄😍
I would love to, but I feel that this song is so personal to your Kazakh history that it might be strange for a foreigner to sing it. I would love to cover another Kazakh song, maybe one a bit happier :)
Yesss !!! I found it, I knew that someone out there had translated it well ... I left it to you and thanks to the Dear , who did it...Ok, I fixed some things because it was not complete and there is old vocabulary used...I hope, in a better sense to the song that goes back to the First World War ...When the Russian Tsar in 1916 issued a decree that required 400,000 men between 19 and 43 years old from the indigenous peoples of Kazakhstan , Central Asia and Siberia, 240,000 were from Kazakhstan ... (sorry for my english, I already said I am Latin, but I understand a lot of english when I listen to it, I don't write so well, but Kazakh language , I still can't learn anything well ...and sorry if there are mistakes) SONG: Mount Samal, my native land, the vast sea. ¿What days await me being a soldier? I remember again and again My native land, where I was born and raised. I don't ride, I walk Even slower than walking. For fifteen days a hike Approaching the city of Omsk.(Omsk Russian city) I'm 24 years old. (Actually says this: "I was born in the year of the ox or cow, I have the age of 2 cycles", note: In the Chinese horoscope, the ox ( cow) cycle is repeated every 12 years, that is 24 years) On will fate is gone in the far the brink. Mount samal , native land remained behind. We are like a school of horses, torn from their native lands. My mother and father are old, old, have been left alone at home, This song is about the misfortune of 1916. Mount Samal , my native land, the vast sea ¿What days await me being a soldier?
There are no Dimash's vocal features. Here he conveys all the longing and tragedy of our people. This was one of the first stages of the genocide of Kazakhs.
I am really really sorry that your people went through such horrors. I hope in modern times since liberation from the Soviet Union that you country and people are healing from the wounds of history and can embrace a much brighter and prosperous future. Dimash is such a fantastic ambassador for Kazakhstan but beyond that he's a gift to all of humanity. May he be treasured by all the world.
I feel exactly like your feeling. Thanks to Dimash I am Absolute fascinated of Kazakh culture and places and voices and stories. I feel the immense love Dimash feel for this country and how he his so proud of it. He brings in my Heart and in the Heart of everyone the greatness of a unknown culture until now to western people. This song Is so beautiful and so technically difficult ...he sings effortlessy something like shamanic sounds that make me fly in Kazakistan without airplane in landscapes that I dont see but I can feel....GREAT DIMASH! THank you for the joy of your reactions!
It’s the sound of The Steppes. I think of cold winters and I can almost feel the wind. Stunning piece of artistry! I do love the minor keys in there. Quite gorgeous. Makes me want to visit that vastness because it paints a picture through the music.
👍Look at the channel of Michael Zech. He translated in serveral languages and shows the story behind. Great song with a deep sense and a message for all of us. I also love the oriental and eastern influences in serveral songs of Dimash. He opened my mind for this style. He surprises me again an again. With 🧡Irene the grandma

Here's the translation of this song: Samal Tau, my native land, the vast sea. What kind of days do I expect in soldiers ?? I remember again and again My native land, where I was born and raised. I don't ride, I walk Even slower than walking. For fifteen days a hike Approaching the city of Omsk. I'm 27 years old. On will fate is gone in the far the brink. Samal Tau, native land remained behind. We are like a school of horses, torn from their native lands. My mother and father, Old men of advanced years... This song is about the misfortune of 1916. Samal Tau, my native land, the vast sea What kind of days do I expect in soldiers? Name of the song is "Samal Tau 1916". Tau Samal was a small village (now a micro district located in Almaty , Kazakhstan) where this story took place. This is a story about a young man who was mobilized for the First World war to go to Omsk (Russia), left behind all his loved ones... And Dimash was able to deliver the soldier's emotions in to his performance, the best version of this song ever. Beginning of the song is two musicians playing The Kobyz (or kyl-kobyz) which is an ancient Kazakh string instrument. It has two strings made of horsehair. The resonating cavity is usually covered with goat leather. Traditionally kobyzes were sacred instruments, owned by shamans and bakses.
Aren't we all? Men and women alike---some men who never fell for a man before, and are totally straight, and it stuns them to find themselves following his every motion "just the way the ladies do." Well, he's impossible NOT to love. I always assure those fellows that it's not strange, and they also reassure each other. I don't know if it passes, with time. For me it's been 6 months since I did anything but watch his videos. My children (all grown) are happy to see something take my interest so powerfully.
HOLA CALEB, DESDE ARGENTINA,BELLÍSIMOS SONIDOS DE ANIMALES Y NATURALEZA Y DIMASH COMO SIEMPRE MARAVILLOSO!!!!!! CANTA CON TANTO SENTIMIENTO LAS CANCIONES DE SU PAÍS, DECSUS RAÍCES. BRAVO DIMASH!!!!!!!!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💙💙💙💙💙💙👍👍👍👍👍🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷

"Samal tau/Самалтау - in memory of the martyrs and the proud Kazakh people who fought against the Soviet terror regime. The period from 1900-1934 was really very tragical for our nation. There were 24 million of Kazakhs in 1897 according to first population sensus. Later the Jungars attacked Kazakh land, many people died. Soon, Russian Tsar conquered Tatars and Bashkort people who are our brothers by blood. Russians attacked Kazakh land and took many young people to the WW1. That's why in 1916 there was a huge rebellion of Kazakhs against Russans. Soviets also wanted to wipe out Kazakhs from the surface of the land, so in 1932-1934 about 6 million of Kazakhs died from awful famine organized by russian government. From 24 mlo. of Kazakhs left only 2 million, a small remnant of the nation survived." - - quoted from the description of the Samal tau video as sung by the HasSak folk band ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KMPgRS9OR6I.html ================ Fact-check: -- the first census under Russian imperial rule in 1897 estimates kazakh population at around 4 million people, not 24m. --The Kazakh famine, known in Kazakhstan as the Goloshchekin genocide, was a man-made famine where 1.5 million (possibly as many as 2.0-2.3 million) people died, of whom 1.3 million were ethnic Kazakhs; 38 - 42% of all Kazakhs died, the highest percentage of any ethnic group killed in the Soviet famines. Prior to the famine, many Kazakhs were pastoral nomads. Stalin’s collectivization policies forced Kazakhs to settle in towns or collective farms, the immediate result of which included precipitous declines of livestock populations, as Kazakhs slaughtered their animals either for food or to sell them in order to fulfill grain quotas. In the 1937 soviet census, kazakh popularion was at 2.2 m. -- the 6 (to 8) million is the estimated number of those who died in the entire Soviet Union due to the famines, not just Kazakhs. -- the 1916 revolt was in response to the Russian tzar's edict ordering males of non-Russian origin, aged 18 to 43 to work in the Russian army. This included those from provinces which were annexed /colonised by the Russian empire. For the local communities this meant sending the strongest members of their families. Protests and then spontaneous violence against Russians in various parts of the region were suppressed by Russian troops. The brute oppression led to the deaths of thousands of people and the massive flight of people from the lands of their ancestors. -- jungars attacked kazakhs during the 17th-18th century. -- The Kazan Tatars were conquered by imperial Russian forces during the reign of Tsar Ivan IV in 1552, becoming the first Muslim subjects of the Russian Empire. When the Russian Empire collapsed in 1917, the Tatars took advantage of the chaos and immediately formed their own home-land, the Idil-Ural State. The Soviet government, however, did not tolerate the independence movement and instead formed the Bashkir Autonomous Republic (Bashkortostan) and the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Tatarstan) on the same soil. When the Soviet government took over these regions, it redrew the boundaries and gave neighboring Russian provinces the best lands. By changing the boundaries, about 75 percent of the Tatar population found itself living outside the borders of Tatarstan.
Thank you for that....yeah, Russian methods .....we all talk about Hitler and the German Nazis, but the soviets killed much more people! Good song by the Hassak....greetings from Poland :)

@@dankan1349 Sorry, but people from Poland are brainwashed. Like the author of the article above. Do you even imagine how many soviet people were killed by nazis? What an ingnorance to compare nazis to soviets! Many of you don`t even know who invented concentration camps like Auschwitz in Poland - the british were the first. British people also committed genocide to chinese, indian and other people. 600 thousand of soviet soldiers perished fighting with nazis in Poland. Shame on you who forgot that. Przepraszam
Caleb, I think you would absolutely love a performer by the name of John Gary. He passed quite some years ago, but his vocal and artistic abilities were astonishing.

Caleb, these subtitles are telling the real story in this traditional song of Kazakhstan ... and they don't seem self-generated ... it's the lament of a young soldier who is forced to war ... remember his land and his elder parents ... it's a sad and true story that happened during the 1st world war ... and Dimash interprets it wonderfully ... thanks for your reactions ... blessings to you !!
Hello, I was waiting for this reaction, I loved the song and obviously I think that Di is again great. He sings always with great feeling the songs of his country ... Thank you! ...Ah! the instrument they play at the beginning is a kobyz, and it seems the sound of howls of wolves or something similar ...I am from Latin America and it translated very well into Spanish, and the song is not going as you see... if you understand some Spanish you could see the MV with good translation ... so far in English I have not seen a good done ...
It's a song sang and written by a Kazakh soldier forced to be drafted to the Russian Army in 1916 under Tsar Nicholas II during WW1. It's a song longing for freedom and and lamenting leaving his homeland and elderly parents for a war they didn't start. It's such a sad detail emphasizing being not in Horseback as they were raised traditionally and were on a journey on foot walking for days. It's such a memorable folk song. Someone uploaded the translation and backstory in RU-vid. I hope you will watch that as well. 🙂
I have always admired artists that are true storytellers... like Jim Croce, Red Sovine or even Ray Stevens 😂 but Dimash is the ultimate storyteller. He makes me feel the ancestry of his nation without understanding a word. Learning the story behind it only deepened that feeling. He truly is the BEST. I love the way that Dimash has inspired you, whether whole songs or just small riffs or phrases. In what ways do you feel that Dimash has influenced you and challenged you as an artist? I'd love to know. Always a pleasure, Caleb. Look forward to your Screaming cover. Hope we get a good look at the making of as well.
I really like your reactions to videos because even though you react in an intellectual way to his vocals and the overall performance, you also have an appreciation for the thought behind the performance, the nuances, and the little things that often go over looked a lot. Most reactors either only focus on his voice and technique and ignore everything else, or they focus heavily on everything else (audience and all) and have little to say about his voice/technique. You're able to do a thought provoking reaction without filming a long drawn out video. It's straight to the point, yet personable...great job! Can't wait to see your cover of Screaming!❤
Great reaction as always 😊👍🏻 I like how you carefully listen and analyze, trying to understand the meaning of the song. Looking forward to your cover of "Screaming" 😊
