I'm no economist, but if I might be able to add my two pence: I'm from a part of the country whose entire economy was reliant on coal mining and shipbuilding. We're still recovering economically from the loss I'm not trying to be rude if this comes across that way, but most people don't care about the economy in the way economists and politicians do. Maybe she was better for the country in economic terms, but our community wasn't. What good is a higher GDP when literally everyone you know is out of work and the community has become atomised? We used to be a really well off area and 40 years after Thatcher, we're still destitute Even if on a global economic level Thatcher was 'good' for the UK, enough small, local communities suffered massive negatives to their own immediate lived experiences for their to be a lot of resentment about her on the whole. The fact is, a lot of communities were absolutely destroyed by her policies Does that make sense? What I mean is like, if you try and view it from the lens of a coal miner, whose town is populated almost exclusively by other coal miners, instead of the lens of an academic economist, it should be easier to understand. What does it matter if the national debt is lower if you can't buy bread to feed your family cause you're out of a job? And as if to spite you, who can't even afford to feed your kids because she forced you out of a job, she goes and takes your kids' free school milk away from you too. It's all about what actually is perceived as affecting people directly

While it was necessary to stop funding unprofitable sectors like coal mines, the Britsh government should have done way more to help people from that sector get other jobs, by training/education and other measures. To be honest, I don't even know how much, if at all, they invested in that, that's my bad. Btw, economists don't focus on maximizing the amount of money, or GDP, but on utility. We do use money (income, spending capacity ect) as measures for utility a lot, but it's not about the money itself. Some economists prefer maximizing total utility, others prefer equalizing utility or creating a minimum utility that is as high as possible.

I fear any economist that cares only about capitalist profit margins instead.

Nobody should care what an economist has to say. Might as well consult an astrologer, as economics and astrology are both equally credible.
