That’s a very good question! I think the answer is to always play against very strong opponents and to lose repeatedly against them. Only then will you learn from your mistakes. But this painful process can take years to achieve. Constantly winning against weaker opponents won’t make you a stronger player!

@@dannytran1587In general, all of that is true. To be “that good” requires a lifetime of study and commitment…as well as always playing against only very strong opponents. But then that raises serious questions as to how some very young players become GMs(!!!) at such a tender age…when they’re barely old enough to even finish grammar school! Yes, a lot of it is commitment and study. But there’s also that intangible and mysterious element of pure, God given talent…and even GENIUS! We’re not all born the same way. Some people just have more natural ability in some things than others. Math, music, chess, etc.

After finishing the video, I add that I love those commented games, it helps me get into the chess culture, evaluate the strength of positions, and develop tactics. The format is great, very clear and easy to understand. Must find some time to watch more of those!

But that’s not what you said originally. Your original comment was simply “Who is Ding Liren?” And then only later did you add the clarification to cover your tracks. For someone like Ding, taking a brief “intermission” from competitive chess is very understandable. Frankly, few people at the highest level of chess expected him to beat Nepo, but against all odds that’s exactly what he did! Ding also is not a gregarious type person who craves attention and the limelight. On the contrary, he’s much more of a quiet, introspective, and private person…which takes a lot of adjusting when you’re suddenly the World Chess Champion!

@vcliburn True that was NOT my original post I was being sarcastic if you will. The point being I would rather have an active WC rather than one that is not. I am not a Nepo fan and am glad Ding won. I look at it as Carlsen has lent the title rather than losing it.
