Welcome to my channel about dinghy cruising a John Welsford designed 'navigator' standing lug sail yawl called Arwen. In this video I start to make rigging alterations to try and improve my sloppy sail shape so that it matches that of other more skilled navigator owners.
Other videos on my channel cover my developing skills in dinghy cruising and maintaining a small open boat along the coastal waters and rivers of SW England. I post at least one video or blog post a fortnight. Follow Arwen's blog at www.arwensmeanderings.blogspot.com
If you enjoy everything to do with learning to sail small open boats and dinghy camping cruising along stunning scenery then come subscribe to our channel and blog. We look forward to hearing and sharing your comments, thoughts and tips.
Steve and Arwen

Not to sure about what you did with the sound, but the "live" commentaries here are great.

the sound was very hit and miss on the gopros this time and i have no idea why - really irritating. Sorry about that but the live stuff went better than I was expecting. It is hard talking to camera if you don't come from journalism background but slowly I am getting better at it. thanks for the positive feedback, appreciated :)

Chris, who tried to contact me via facebook and this video - thanks for your comment - sadly I cannot get it to publish here for some reason. The actual correct setting of the sail is to have the boom on the port side of the mast and the upper yard on the starboard side. the crease is almost now gone although does occasionally reappear. It is to do with tension on the downhaul and also how far back aft I have tied the main halyard on the upper yard. However, always keen to learn - I may well give your idea of boom and yard on the same side of the mast a try when I am next out - thanks for the tip Steve

I've just read your latest blog entry Steve, thankyou for trying my method, however, I cannot take the full credit, away from the other chap that suggested the same, I hope it helps, it was bothering me more to know if my idea worked or not, i understand nil towards the navigator rigging, so apologies if I were against the grain. I plan personally to build a Welsford boat of my own soon! No doubt I'll have a lot of learning to do ! Fair winds to you and Arwen.

I have a correction to make, since reading up on sail manufacturing I am now aware a sail isnt flat, the hollow is sewn into it, I'm forever learning! Contemplating sewing my own sail you see 😬🤞

It does help in one way but not another. I've rechecked the plans several times and actually the top yard does go to starboard side and the boom to the port side and then the sail bottom comes to the starboard side of the boom. Where the issue is at the bottom of the sail. Having watched some similarly rigged navigators...they have considerable.more sail below the boom operating as a vang. I don't...so that seems to be where a problem exists...which I now need to work out. 🤔🙄😀

Respectfully, It seems something doesn't line up as if there is a piece included from another puzzle somewhere, but I couldn't possibly fathom it. I'm sure it can't be down to the fine tuning of the rig! I think?. I only have one further input to suggest, I think you're already onto it, perhaps Lay the sail so as it is fully on the port side of the boom/mast etc leaving the tack clear and not wrapping itself over the boom, I hope my suggestions help and I hope you don't mind me sticking my oar in. Fair winds friend. 🙂

Jose, Todavía encuentro el manejo y el recorte de velas como un arte oscuro, pero poco a poco empiezo a comprender cómo funciona mi barco. :)

Hi steve! I enjoy your videos and adventures, you seem to be where I'd like to be in the future, I'm quite new to cruising my mirror in chichester. An idea occurred to me that I think may release the crease in your main, have you tried putting the boom on the same side of the mast as the lug yard ( not sure that is what it's called, the big sticky thing at the top of your main i guess!) 😆 please let me know if it works! Chris.

Apologies I hadn't noticed this reply, I asked about this same thing in another clip, I've tried to see the arrangement you have as best I can from the videos, perhaps the tensioning line attached to the foremost cleat on the boom can round the mast, placing the boom on the starboard side of the mast to match the yard?

Definitely worth a try I think

At around 2:49 the "fold" I described in my other comment is visible, also please note her sail has no wind and the only tension comes from her rigging

Hi,I'm not an expert on standing lugs, but I have an 11ft dinghy that I built and rigged as a standing lug. It looks to me as if this rig of yours is very wrong. When Jeckells made your sail,it was made to fasten to the boom at tack and clew. The tack should not be attached to the deck. Also you appear to have the boom on one side of the mast and yard the other. The downhaul is attached to the boom.I should say I'm a fan of Jeckells having a mainsail made by them on my 24ft gaffer. Unfortunately when you do get the sail set properly it may be stretched in the wrong places and never be the same as when new. Hope this helps . Happy sailing.

Hi John, thanks for the observations. The boat is rigged as per the plans and every other navigator using the same rig configuration. It is my poor sail trimming skills rather than the rig design 🤣

Hi thanks for your prompt reply.I've been sailing for nearly 53 years and never seen a lug rig with this arrangement. Just goes to show you never stop learning where sailing is concerned! Mind you, I still think the yard and boom should be on the same side . Also ,looking at your other videos, I think the uphaul for the for'd end of the boom appears to be pushing the boom aft and creasing the sail ................But then I am a pedantic old git!!!!!!! happy sailing once this bloody lockdown is over.

I'd say u r pretty shrewd actually. U r right I always end up pulling the another too tight which then causes the crease. As I said I'm useless at sail trimming and you sir clearly know your stuff so thank you for the observations. The boom and yard either side of the.mast are as per the plans. It means on a starboard tack the mainsail presses against the boom but on a port tack it doesn't. If u have any other observations you holler. It's because of the kindness of people like yourself that I learn so much...so thank you

I think we will get to the solution here. We're On a similar path, I hadn't noticed these comments, Pretty sure the sail is being twisted near the mast, I think it's a matter of correcting the yard or boom against the mast, and the rest will follow

Two things to try....top yard same side as boom and sprit boom not hauled as tight.....will be an interesting next trip out 😄
