That's exactly what I felt as I watched this. As we get further on from his passing, it's so affirming to have this example of him and his friends and colleagues just having unalloyed fun. Good call.
It's heartwarming to see. I think this footage was recorded for their documentary (beyond the lighted stage) where we saw the double tragedy Neil went through. It's great seeing him here content and laughing his ass off with his 2 best mates.
@@andrewhoag6167 uuuugh… let’s not call them “colleagues” … only pretentious Ivy league fucks refer to each other as that. And I like to think and believe that these three are WAY more in touch with reality than some Ivy league secret society schmuck
Man, anytime I’m sad or need a laugh I always come back to this video and just laugh with them. These three men truly were a gift to the music industry and to the world. Rush will forever be immortalized.
I enjoy this video too and watched several times. These are not only 3 of the best musicians out there, they are 3 of the best people out there. RIP Neil Peart, thank you for creating a way of music that will nary be repeated.
in a hundred years, when they, and we, are all gone our descendants will watch this, and THEY will be able to laugh without crying a little bit US, we will have to cry a little bit too
At a minimum be required to go on a national television show and give a detailed explanation why they gave this a thumbs down just prior to being drawn and quartered.
I just found this and I have to say for “three boring old men”, that was by far one of the best ways to describe friendship I’ve ever seen. R.I.P. Professor. 3 ordinary guys from Canada rocked the world and blew our minds. Thank you gentlemen, Mike
My mother passed away in September & as I was going through her storage, crying & mourning the loss of such an amazing person, I asked her for a sign that she knew how much I loved & missed her, as I was opening one of the last boxes. Right there on top, was the Rush star man concert t-shirt from the 2112 tour, my very first concert from when I was in junior high school. It was/is in pristine condition, since I must have only worn it a few times. Of course it’s about 3 sizes too small, but I knew right away that it was her way of giving me a hug. I had no idea she had kept that, or why she did. I used to drive her crazy playing their albums loud enough for the neighborhood to hear, (I mean it’s Rush, you gotta crank it!) But that made them even more special to me, than they already were, & that’s saying something because anyone who knows me, knows they’re my all-time favorite band. That t-shirt is now on a shadow box, hanging the wall of our game-room. When my BFF from back them, who went to that concert with me, as well as many more, called me & said “sweetie, I don’t how to tell you this, but Neil....”.... we both cried & tried to comfort each other, as though he were a close friend or family. That’s what it felt like. She & I both get it, while others may think we’re crazy for being so emotional about a rockstar whom we never actually met, but reading these comments, I’m so glad we’re not the only ones.
He was a treasure on the skins. But what kind of man would seriously write the lyrics to The Larger Bowl and yet bring new life into such a horrible world? I don't mean to be a jerk, but what happened between Vapor Trails and Snakes and Arrows to make him go from writing the lyrics to One Little Victory to those of The Larger Bowl?
@@Torgo1969 Seems like an obtuse question. Just because he can see the troubles others go through, just because he himself went through dark times, doesn't mean one can't find their own happiness.
Prog rock? They aren’t Yes or Genesis. Early Genesis blows and Yes is marginally good. Rush created music far beyond lame prog rock; more like metal hidden within some of the best songs ever written.
I love when Alex jokes about the fridge magnet and it not sticking to the vase, Geddy says "That's a Mayor Tommy Shanks moment" ... referring to John Candy's character in an SCTV skit. So Canadian ...
“We can do anything, because there are almost no practical considerations anymore.” Man - that’s real talk right there. Same as it was in the beginning.
I recall Bono saying something like that once during the Popmart tour. He'd come up with some wild idea to which the engineers would say that's impossible. Then he'd say "well, here's this (insert obsene amount) much money"...and the engineers would say ok...done!
I love this. Watching Rush having dinner and getting drunk together is so awesome. Hearing Neil laughing brings a tear to my eye. I hate that he's not with us anymore. Most bands don't last 40+ years let alone enjoy each other's company.
I'm so glad they did this. Getting to have dinner with Neil before he passed and listening to Neil enjoying life with Geddy and Alex cracking him up was great. Alex is especially hilarious. He kills me.
I'm only in my 20s and these guys' work means so much to me. I can only imagine what it means to people who have listened since their dawn. Truly incredible art and incredible people.
The first time I heard Tom Sawyer on the radio when it was released, changed my life more than any other song. I had been playing drums for a couple of years and I didn't have the first clue about how to play it at the time. My first Rush concert was Signals in 1982. The ticket was $12.50
i am almost 40 and have listened to them for more than 20 years. I only just learned about Geddy Lee having an honorary exhibit in the Negro Baseball League Hall of Fame buying collections of signed Negro League baseball players and donating directly to the museum who did not have the ability to acquire em. They only thought he was gonna donate less than a half dozen. He got them between 200-400 signed baseballs
Neil said that Alex was the funniest man alive. The three of them were blessed to find eachother and have a really amazing bond, and we are all blessed too witnessing their mastery. 🙏💗
This dinner, for me, shows why Rush was such a long lasting band: after more than 40 years they are still good friends. No competition, no envy, no hard feelings. They are able to sit down, have a 5 hour dinner joking and laughing. They did enjoy eachother as friends, as musicians, as human beings. That's why is so sad for me to know that Alex and Geddy are probably so heartbroken right now. Any way this video is one of the best things ever for a Rush fan, it really warms the heart to see them together having a ball. I'd like to remember this forever. Thanks Sam Dunn for this. Thanks for the journey Professor!
I never thought I would see Neil Peart almost spit out his drink from laughter. What a wholesome and soothing video. They were just as lucky to have each other as we were to have them.
Geddy says "now you can see how boring we are" No Geddy, we don't have you confused with someone else like Motley Crue or Guns 'n Roses. These three are engaging, and its a privilege to see people who've known each other for decades in such an intimate setting, and their display of humor is all hardly boring.
i agree .definatly ...good clean intelligent bunch of blokes and lifelong friends enjoying their hard earned spoils in in life ... real musicians no bullshit
It might have been 34 years ago, I was a professional belly dancer when Rush came to town for a concert. Afterwards, they had a Hawaiian type buffet for them but they could not find a Hula dancer, so I got hired to dance for them. Afterwards we got to sit and chat for a little bit and Alex told me he liked Greek food and wanted to know how to make stuffed grape leaves! I explained the process, and he said there were some great Greek restaurants in Toronto. All three of the men were super nice to me and I'll never forget that.
@@rm5157 Yep. Greektown is awesome. Toronto is a great city for food. You can get practically anything here. Shoutout to the back bacon sandwiches at St. Lawrence Market.
You took the words right out of my mouth manakin5. They seem so approachable and reverent to their fans.Always loved this band for their music and professionalism on the road and in their concerts. Never any drama on the news, just 3 guys going to their shows, working hard to please their fans, then driving to the next show. Been following them since I was a teen in the mid 70's. Unbelievable!
My friend grew up in Toronto. He had to hitch a ride to hockey practice and was lucky enough to have Geddy Lee pick him up and gave him a ride right to the rink. Was such a nice person he said.
Don't ever tell me that Rush isn't cool. These guys are so great together, Virtuoso musicians, intelligent, funny, and best of friends. So cool to see. R I P Neil.
That's the beauty of they're relationship , no big heads here , guys that met in HS , and still joking and enjoying each other's company , like they were still teenagers , co workers and the best of friends , when Neil passed , they had no desire to play anymore , and went thru a hard time grieving Neil's death , that says it all , when he died a part of them died , rarely happens that way when a member of a band dies ,they usually go on , Rush didn't and never will , to try to replace Neil would be impossible , A marriage like that only happens once , if even that , R I P Professor 🙏🙏
Watching these 3 dudes, genuine lifelong friends, brothers, goofballs, and children at heart, who happened to be one of the best rock bands of all time, having the best time ever all the time, just makes me smile and sad at the same time... Watching Neal laugh non stop is just heartwarming... They each completed each other, and now a big piece is missing...
I could watch a Netflix series that is composed of just these dudes interacting like this and I would binge watch the hell out of it. Absolutely hilarious and you have to love the bond that they share. Rush today, tomorrow, and past 2112 \m/
My best friend was just buried today -- dressed in a Rush t shirt, his favorite. I just had to spend some time watching these guys on You tube in remembrance of Kevin. Love these guys. Long live Rush!
@Andrea R - listen to the song Afterimage, from Grace Under Pressure. It’s about the loss of a close friend of the boys. It’ll make you cry, and rock, and soothe your soul, all at the same time. It perfectly describes the feeling. I lost one of my closest friends-like a kid brother, really-in 1985, and it was the saddest moment in my life. Remember all of the times you had together, and cherish the random dreams when you will see him again. (Oddly enough, they have been very rare, for me, and it always feels like he was really there.) Also, I just had a thought: write down every memory you have, now, while they’re still fresh in your mind. I wish I had started a journal back then, because I have forgotten so many things over the years! And, talk about him, often, with your mutual friends, and encourage them to share their memories and stories, and write them down, also. Preserve your memories while you can! If you believe that there is more after this life, then maybe your hope will be like mine: some day, when I pass away, I want to see him walk out of the mist to welcome me, saying, “You’re always late...I’ve been waiting for you!” 😜 And, give me the warmest, heartfelt, and tears-of-joy and laughter-laden, bear hug ever! For a while, you will continue to be incredulous at each occasion in which he would’ve been there, and you will always miss him, but it will hurt less and less over time. Just keep listening to Rush-you’ll always have their music to remind you. Hope that helps a little bit. P.S. My buddies and I couldn’t bring ourselves to look closely at his body in the open casket, but we could see-from a distance - that he had on a t-shirt. He was a huge football fan, and my mom said that it was a Raiders shirt! He was, of course, a huge Rush fan, also! If my memory serves me well, we thought that, maybe, it was a Van Halen T-shirt! Rock On always, my brother, Mike O’Hern!! 🤗❤️🤘🏻🎸 🥁 🎹 🎤🎸🤘🏻
As I have aged along with my favorite Rush songs I have felt more and more each year this band's songs transcend our mundane day-to-day existence. Anyone laying down to rest in the Earth and accepting the final fate - with Rush laying across his chest - is a hero to me. I look forward to being one with Kevin somewhere, some day. Perhaps you and Kevin will reminisce together, and perhaps someday I may join the two of you for those fireside talks.
There is a reason we all Love Rush.... not only the greatest rock musicians of all time but some of the greatest humans you will ever find.... Thank you Rush for all of the years of Inspiration you have given us!!
They're too clean. All married family men who don't cheat on their wives and don't trash hotels or end up in detox/rehab. That's why they are out of the mainstream and not on the cover of Rolling Stone. All their songs do not contain raunchy lyrics. And yet, they are hugely popular! And because of all the things I just mentioned, as well as their music, is why I love this band!
Christopher Rizzo no, they started picking up after Fly By Night and 2112, and their peak as far as commercial success was with Moving Pictures in 1981. With Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Red Barchetta, and the rest.
Seriously folks, have you EVER seen 3 people who have worked & lived together so closely in such a volitile environment for so many hours per day for 40+ years, get along this well, and so clearly, genuinely enjoy the others company so deeply? I never seen the members of any other band be so childishly playful and silly this late in both age & career. Seriously, I've never seen Keith & Mick, Frey & Henley, Queen, etc. display this level of mirth & happiness & mutual respect. What IS their secret? :-P Oh, and to guy that responded to my previous post, you're absolutely right, I really do have far too much time on my hands! :-)
it's quite refreshing for sure. They seem naturally at ease around each other. Although it helps when there's only three of you and everyone gets to share in writing royalties : )
I know what you mean. They are an extreme rarity when it comes to rock bands. Also not to mention they are still mentally and physically sharp. Unlike most their age who's bodies have been totally destroyed by all the drugs they did in their younger years.
Such a joy to watch. Makes ya feel good to see this camaraderie and genuine like for one another. Impossible not to smile and laugh along with the guys.
Great to whatch the friendship and love in this band. Mr Peart was such a great drummer, composer, writer and just love his personality, precence, humor and laughter. R.I.P. Neil Peart.
Alex starting at around 6:35 had me gasping with laughter for a solid minute. Stolid Neil brutally cracking up over his dinner made it worse. Lerxst just kept saying funny shit! Alex: (suddenly gruff) I hate fuckin' watches! Neil: (openly lolling) How do you know what time it is?!? Alex: (sassy) I don't care about the time!
Lerxst could have been a very successful stand up comedian if the band thing never worked out. Neil is laughing at literally everything Geddy & Alex say because you can tell he's just excited to be around his buddies (I think this was filmed in California & they had probably not seen each other for at least a year) Great video, miss these guys.
Usually it is sad to see rockers in their older years ... a shadow of themselves. These men transcend that fate. Here they are travelers on a journey together, they have grown together - as if brothers-in-arms - over the years. They now accept who they are today as well as who they were yesterday. They belong in a Tolkienian story; this scene appears after our heroes endure many years of trials, tribulations, mutual peril, dark terror, and just as often times of pure kindness or beauty. Finally their journey has brought them to this very warm, cozy and lovely dinner to not just relive their glory days, but to share something deeper.
How beautiful to watch this again one day after Alex’s 68th birthday and to remember ‘Pratt’. ❤️ To Geddy and Alex… Thank you for sharing Neil with us for all these years!
After such heartbreak, Neil has the biggest smile ive ever seen. God, I love this video so much. Edit: Neil passed away a few days ago, and I came back to this video to find so many others relating in the comments of how he has affected their lives. Love you all, Rest In Peace Neil Peart.
I’m 20 years old in 2023 and I’ve been listening to rush as far back as i can remember from my dad playing an old vhs tape of maybe like grace under pressure live I really can’t remember but we were poor and rush kept us sane we got to see them in 2015 on their last tour rip Neil and good living to Alex and geddy definitely the biggest influences of my life
God that man is missed! I'm 60..and the musician ship of these 3 will never be Duplicated..EVER!!!! POUND FOR POUND. THE BEST BAND EVER. EVEN OVER MY BELOVED BEATLES
I mean, a dinner with Alex Lifeson. You don't even need to bring alcohol in order to have fun. A very memorable night and so generous from the band to have shared this. Geddy has a very acute sense of humour too. Neil only had to sit and enjoy the show and no Geddy, you guys were anything but boring. : - )
Yeah, the opportunity to just to sit with friends and have a meal and good honest conversation seems to be fleeting. People move, you start having family and everything seems to fade. Sad
Geddy was the master mindset and negotiater. These three worked so well together throughout a 40 year marriage. RIP to Neil (the GOAT) and love to you both in the living.
They do a fundraiser for one of their charities called Grapes for Humanity. Lucky ticket holders get a train trip from Toronto to a winery and spend the entire day getting drunk with Geddy and Alex. They just did one a few months ago so you might have to wait until fall but keep an eye on their websites.
I think what most don't understand about RUSH fans is these songs carried us along in our lives. Our favorites bring back memories of a simpler time. There are like old friends that bring music into your lives and the joy of their 40 year musical union.
